A committee of journalists, scholars and video game industry members has inducted Super Mario Bros. into the new World Video Game Hall of Fame in the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. The original game for the Nintendo Entertainment System is one of six inductees in this inaugural class.
The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games that meet the following criteria: icon-status, longevity, geographical reach and influence. Launching in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Mario Bros. is one of the most well-known and best-selling games of all time, selling more than 40 million units worldwide and starring instantly recognizable characters like Mario, Luigi and Bowser. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the long-running franchise. To evolve the series like never before, Nintendo is launching Mario Maker, a game for the Wii U console that lets players play, create and share their own Super Mario Bros. levels using four Super Mario Bros. game themes – from the 8-bit pixel art of the original game to the world and characters of New Super Mario Bros. U.

Here’s how I see it, if the game is more about FUN and great gameplay, than how good the game looks, then it should be inducted, no matter what company made it.

And before people complain how I’m sounding like a Fanboy, let me state this. I have a problem with Fifa, Call Of Duty, Assassins Creed and any other game that gets a YEARLY release, games like GTA, The Sims, etc, even though I don’t play them and most likely never will, I have no problem with, because there is usually a few years between releases and I wish more developers took that approach, rather than the ‘It’s a popular franchise, let’s release a ‘New’ game from the franchise every year.’ Seriously, games like Fifa, could easily get lower priced DLC that adds a new mode or two and an update, that updates the teams and the players, with a new version of the game releasing after a few years

I tend to agree with you, although I personally feel Mario became a cash-grab for Nintendo with the “New” series.
Still, I can set aside my angst for the plumber for a moment to let him enjoy his induction to the hall of fame. As a matter of fact, I’d be privileged to walk him in myself…at night…so I can lock the door to his cell and toss the key! :D

Like I said, I only have problems with games that are blatant Cash Grabs by being Yearly Releases. Yes, there was 2012 with New Super Mario Bros 2 and New Super Mario Bros U, but that aside, each ‘New’ game came out after 3 years of the last. Plus, it’s one per console, so…yeah.
My only real problem with the New Super Mario Bros Games is that it’s not a ‘New’ series anymore, it’s been almost 10 years since the first New Super Mario Bros, so they should get rid of the ‘New’ Prefix and just keep it to Super Mario Bros. NX, for example…
I wonder if they will put Zelda in next year on its 30th anniversary? That would be SO AWESOME!! Zelda is one of, if not my, absolute FAVORITE VIDEO GAME SERIES OF ALL TIME!!! The first game I ever played was Zelda and Mario. It’s such a great day today now.
Wait a second I went to the link for the hall of games, and it listed Zelda and Mario on the same list, does that mean it was inducted too?
I think that this is just for Super Mario Bros.(1985) and not the entire franchise and the Zelda and Mario sighting is for the franchises. Simply put, Super Mario Bros is get an individual recognision, for saving the Video Game industry after the horror that was E.T on Atari 2600.

Since next year is both The Legend of Zelda and Metroid’s 30th anniversary, i hope Nintendo does something special. Maybe release a golden Wii U with Zelda U and release two Metroid games in one year 2D and 3D.
