Update: Square Enix has confirmed to IGN that NX is under consideration.

Today Square Enix lifted the lid on the eagerly awaited Dragon Quest XI. Interestingly, the company revealed that the game would be coming to the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo NX. This would make it the first game that is basically confirmed for the platform. We don’t know what shape or form the Nintendo NX will take, but it is certainly an interesting development. You can read all about the upcoming game, below.

  • Dragon Quest X and XI announced for the NX.
  • Two different games with the same story similar to Ni no Kuni.
  • Both games slated for 2016 release to coincide with series 30th anniversary.
  • The two games will still have the same core staff working on them.
  • Is being made for the PS4 and 3DS (probably New3DS)
  • DQXI is also coming to the NX (probably the PS4 version?)
  • PS4 version is developed with the assistance of Orca.
  • PS4 version runs on UE4
  • PS4 version is open(-ish?) world. Similar to DQVIII
  • 3DS version is developed with the assistance of Toy Logic.
  • 3DS Version presents a classic 2D Sprite style on the bottom screen.
  • 3DS version will have 2D sprite battles + random battles when playing with the D-Pad and 3D battles when playing with the circle-pad.
  • Release targeted within the 30th anniversary year for the series, so within the fiscal year starting April 1st, 2016 and ending March 31st 2017.

  1. The fact that they are even considering it gives me hope that the console may have more third party games than the wii u did

      1. Remember when EA threw a tantrum over origins and started a smear campaign against the Wii U? Yeah, so Do I.

        1. Remember when Nintendo didn’t do anything to fight back against the smear campaign & they didn’t do any aggressive marketing to let everyone know the Wii U wasn’t some attachment to the Wii? Yeah, so do I.

You’ll probably see Japanese support, not so sure about the west though, EA is very doubtful and you definitely won’t be seeing the likes of Batman and GTA that’s for sure.

  2. Seeing how the NX is rumored to be a cross between handheld and console, with our luck the NX version will just be because it will play the 3DS version and won’t look like the PS4 version :(

    1. Not really, it’s pointing towards the fact that the NX version will be similar to the PS4 version… just saying

      1. They assumed the NX was getting the PS4 version. They said PS4 was running on UE4 engine. The NX could be the 3DS version. It could be a low res version of the PS4 edition. It can be on par with PS4. No one knows. Don’t assume.

    1. Never mind. The comment I replyed to with this comment, has been deleted. So I guess it was put on it’s own.

  3. “3DS version will have 2D sprite battles + random battles when playing with the D-Pad and 3D battles when playing with the circle-pad.”

Now that’s quite interesting. As long as we’re not forced to go through random encounters, I definitely won’t complain. Nice idea.

    1. From the gameplay, you actually play it in 3D on the top screen, and classic 2D on the bottom screen at the same time. The enemies show up on the top but they’re hidden on the bottom, making it feel like random encounters.

  4. Considering bringing it to NX, huh? Good! Now more developers should think about doing the same with their games and we might finally have a perfect Nintendo console…

    1. Yeah I remember getting the Wii U early on in the US because of Dragon Quest X and it never came :(

This time I will be waiting a bit before making my purchase. I hope they keep the name NX though, it sounds good.

      1. After the Wii U, I think any logical Nintendo fan will be waiting to see what bites first, before they jump right in again.

  5. So Square Enix and Ready At Dawn are already showing interest in the NX huh?…..interesting. And I don’t think DragonQuest X and DragonQuest XI are ” under consideration ” as Square Enix says, I think they are already confirmed for the NX it’s just that Square Enix felt that when they announced those titles for the platform so early that they made have let the cat out of the bag on what the NX will be when Nintendo wants to keep it’s identity a secret until next year. E3 2016 shall indeed be interesting

        1. Ooh, finally getting your own washing machine? Mom’s still gonna be the one doing the laundry though, obviously.

          Unlimited POWERRRR!!!!

        1. I doubt it especially with the way they’ve been saying that the NX may surprise and shock people, so if that’s the case, they have to come out on the big stage

    1. There announcement still doesn’t say what the NX is. It still clarify that it is a dedicated video gaming platform.

  6. Oh please we all know this was an announcement and nintendos team got onto them to shut their mouths. Bring on NX 2016

  7. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Makes me think now that Slightly Mad Studios might have known more about NX that they were letting on…

    1. I’m pretty sure a lot of people know more about the NX then they’re letting on. I bet quite of few of those people also have large knives at their throat as well as a precaution.

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

The way that the Wii U version changed from “looking great” to not being able to hit 30FPS, and “maybe we’ll wait for a new hardware announcement”, Might be a coincidence, but I’m not so sure…

  8. I expect we’ll be seeing quite an influx of this kind of thing within the next few months. Instead of Wii U instalments we’ll be hearing of NX instalments instead. Not that that’s a bad thing. The more stuff announced before we even know what the console is, the better. Amazing game series can fuel a console release so easily with hype, and with a Dragon Quest game heading to it? Japan’s gonna fucking eat it up.

    1. You are implying that it is a console and not a handheld. Just from the consideration and that the platform of nintendo announced is 3DS. It could be speculated that it is a handheld.

  9. The fact that they said the words “in consideration” is a sign that they actually have the Dev Kits for a while meaning a NX version might come out next year with the console itself.

  11. This is very interesting news in several ways but one of those ways is that the nx may come out next year or at the latest be delayed until 2017 and maybe even a possible 2018 if things don’t go according to plan and there may be several big 3rd party games at launch for the nx and hopefully several big 1st party games

  12. So there’s a chance that this is coming to 3DS and not just New 3DS?

I still don’t see owning a New one as a priority. But then again, my 3ds is packed to the gills with games.

    Damn it!!!

    1. Has any third party developers actually used the New 3DS exclusively? That was the main problem with creating a system that isn’t much different than the last, it just splits the player base. I always knew developers weren’t going to risk the poor sales, just to put their games on the New 3DS. They know they can make money off the old one.

So far not even Nintendo is supporting it.

      1. Well I just say that because in the article it reads like its going to be a possibility that it will be for the New 3DS. I don’t know what third party developers are doing, but you’re right since the base for the original is so big it makes way more sense to put it on the older model. I’ve never played a Dragon Quest game but the video certainly makes me want to try it.

Im still dreaming of a secret of mana revival.

        1. Well it could be possible, but it doesn’t seem likely from someone like Square, they’re usually all about the money. Unless Nintendo has this plan to start pushing the New 3DS hard, along with the NX.

I mean that’s the only thing I can think of, maybe they plan on riding on the New 3DS for longer than I thought. I mean I personally still don’t understand why they made it, and I only bought one for the better 3D. I’d still much rather would have had them wait to make something much better than a slightly upgraded 3DS.

          1. I agree. I will not denie the new features are welcome and a good direction, but another 3DS with slightly higher specs wasn’t necessary yet. Reminds me of the Gameboy Micro, although those were kind of badass…..

            1. Yea, the micro was cool. Wish they’d make a new Super Dodge Ball, I loved that game. Another favorite of mine around that time, was the Neo-Geo pocket color.

  13. If DQ XI is coming to the 3DS, why on earth would Squeenix mention releasing the same game on the NX? Why sell two versions when you have a larger install base on the 3DS?

I think the NX version IS a PS4 port, making the console at par or stronger than the competition, and the 3DS version allows for a cross-play between the two.

And even if the NX can compete against the PS4 and XBO, I will never buy a Slightly Mad Studio title for it.

  14. All of this is making it seem like the NX will release earlier than expected. I mean if developers already have kits and games being planned for it.

Wish they’d announce if they’re going to put Zelda Wii U on the NX too, cause that is all I’m holding onto my Wii U for really. Anything in between that is just to keep me busy with it until then, but I can live without the rest of these Wii U games.

  15. Urgh, stop talking about fucking NX. No one knows how the damn console will be like, why even bother to mention about bringing a game to a platform that still doesn’t exist? I hate these developers that keep talking about NX before the public even knows what it is and what it is about. Give it time and stop with the bullshit PR, goddamnit. What is on the market at the moment is the WiiU, and if you have nothing for it, just don’t say anything -.-

    1. Pretty sure developers already know what the system will be like, otherwise they would not be talking about putting games on it. Nintendo already said they’ve been talking to people about the system. People know, just not the general public.

    2. Unless Nintendo is finally smartening up by evolving with the times so they are finally taking what 3rd parties want out of a console into consideration.

  16. Everyone wants to see Nintendo succeed with their new console. I feel even 3rd party devs want to as well.

Nintendo has been viewed so harshly as of late, but it is still a beloved company. No one ACTUALLY wants to see Nintendo fail. Especially 3rd party devs who grew up playing Nintendo and idolize their games.

    1. I like to believe this myself. 3rd parties have just been so critical of Nintendo not because they want the company to fall but because they want it to grow & evolve.

      1. Except for EA. I think they would actually love to see Nintendo go out of business. You don’t become the golden poo company two times in a row for nothing. lol

  17. Interesting. Could some of our theories about E3 2015 being bad because the Wii U is being ditched for the NX next year be true? I guess we’ll find out for sure at next year’s E3.
