Kensuke Tanabe, the producer behind Metroid Prime: Federation Force, has recently sat down with online gaming publication US Gamer to discuss the game. It is a lengthy interview, but it is certainly an interesting one. During the interview Tenabe reveals that the acclaimed Retro Studios were the company responsible for the design of the mechs in the game. He also mentioned how you will go about playing the co-op title in single player.
USG: You mentioned it’s a co-op game, is it possible to play it solo or do you have to play it with other people?
KT: So you can play as a solo player and up to four people. When you play as a single player, you have the choice to get the drones to help you and support you throughout the mission. Of course, you can always play by yourself too, if you don’t want that extra help. If you don’t need any drones, then that’s perfectly fine as well. However, if you do so, you’re basically raising that bar and making the mission quite difficult for yourself. But I do know that Metroid fans like that extra challenge, so I can totally see players making things difficult for themselves.
USG: Is Retro involved in this project at all?
KT: The whole development has been done by Next Level Games. There was just one part — for the design for the mechs, Retro had the supervisory role for this game.

No. I am not. I have nothing against first person games. I have only enjoyed one and that was goldeneye 64. Something about when I play them all I see is the background moving but my character is being still. Never really felt like first person but background moving.

I don’t mind first person games even though I’d prefer 3rd person. I’m enjoying Etrian Odyssey even though the games are first person. I fucking love the Metroid Prime Trilogy but I prefer that MP4 drops 1st person & goes with 3rd person instead. Or Metroid Prime ends with Corruption & the thing with Sylux stalking Samus at the end of that game leads to a post Fusion game, instead of us getting Metroid Prime 4.

No. It’s both. I fucking hate the chibi style. To me, turning Metroid chibi is like turning Aliens chibi.
I don’t have a problem with the different designs and art styles as games can do that and still be fun. Example is look at game that lego has done. The artsy let is funny looking since it is lego but the games are still fun and don’t hurt the franchises they use.
I give a pass to Lego because it’s… well… fucking Lego. But if people want a new artstyle, they can go to Zelda for that. I don’t usually care about realistic graphics but Metroid is just one of those games that should stick solely to it. And least with Lego, it’s not being shoved into the established timeline for some god forsaken reason.
If metriod only sticks to that then it may get stale. Variety is good. It is just one game and people act like it will be the norm.

Well there are artstyles that remain in the realm of realism. I wouldn’t have a problem with Federation Force if it went with one of those. Chibi style is just not one of them.

The problem I have with the Wii, is because of the huge success, Nintendo thought that they could replicate that this gen with the Wii U. And the Wii U isn’t exactly a console everyone loves.

From what I saw of the Treehouse coverage, this game actually looked like a lot of fun.
It does look really cool and fun and I’m hoping to pick it up. The main reason people are mad about it is because a real metroid game hasn’t come out in so long. If MP4 had come out or was coming out soon (I actually suspect a NX release) they wouldn’t care. Personally I think the game looks cool, and I love the co-op, I havnt played the prime series though so I can’t say which one is better. From what everyone’s saying the prime series is 10 times better, and I don’t doubt them. I still want this game though.
I’m aware of the situation but I’m not going to hate on a perfectly good game because there wasn’t a prime game announced for Wii U.
To be honest it’s been longer waiting for a Star Fox game so I’m happy for that.
People don’t want to support it, because they want to send Nintendo a message to make the Metroid games they want to play. If everyone goes out and buys this Metroid game, then the next one could very well just be a sequel to the chibi-style instead of the style everyone wants!

Yes, Star Fox was a long wait, but when they revealed the new Star Fox it is actually freaking STAR FOX. It isn’t the “wait” to makes people not buy a game. If the new Star Fox was a huge deviation from the originals with chibi-style graphics and Fox McCloud wasn’t even the main character or featured substantially in the game itself, then people would surely be pissed.
Or maybe they are trying to broaden the metroid audience in preparation for a new game and if this doesn’t sell well then we might not even get a new metroid

As for the Star Fox thing, there’s been four Metroid games released over the last two generations on home platforms + MPT (GC, Wii). In that time there’s been Starfox Adventures (Dinosaur planet with a star fox license) and Assault, Star Fox fans have had to be patient.

I saw the Treehouse coverage too. It made me feel a lot better about it seeing the gameplay and the Metroid creatures on some of the levels. But then I dove deeper and looked at more videos from people that got their hands on it. Their excitement about the game is real. It may not be what some were hoping for, but it’s looking really fun to me.

I’ve heard and seen great things about this game from the people that got their hands on it. Hell I even heard amazing things about Blastball, and from that I feel so much better about this game. Still I have been thinking the same thing, and believe that there’s more going on with Metroid Wii U.

Metroid could be a launch game for the NX… you know. If Nintendo wants their console to be a success.
Nintendo needs to come out arms-a-swingin’ with the release of the NX. Mario, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, Amiibos should ALL be in the launch line-up in some substantial way to get the sales flowing.

In all fairness we only seen 2 mins of the game, we don’t really know what else it has too, i’m not buying day one or anything my interest level just isn’t high until i see more or try i can’t say much
Initially I didn’t know much about it and was disappointed, but I got over it. Eventually I saw the TreeHouse Segments and several other videos from people who got their hands on it, and I’ll tell you I feel so much better about it. People really seem to enjoy it a lot and were able to get deeper into the game. I’m just saying look around. It’s not what we were expecting if we were expecting, but I’m interested.

Other M: tried to cater to the Japanese by turning Samus into a submissive woman which is what most Japanese men want out of a woman.

It’s Nintendo’s attempt to grab casuals who can’t quite grasp MH. So they dumbed it down, cute-ified it, and slapped “Metroid Prime” – the franchise with a huge reputation that few younger gen or casuals have ever even played.

1. Well since this was in production or thought production for 10 years this was obviously planned to come out sooner or later
2. The metroid series will continue to be good and people will continue to like and bitch about this game when it comes out and fans will like and dislike this game
3. This will introduce new people to the series and I’m sure there are going to be veterans who will like this game to know more about the metroid verse especially since this game has something to do with the 3d metroid game coming out later
4. Metroid fans will just have to wait just like any other game franchise in its same predicament

Nintendo sadly started putting greed over it’s customers long before Federation Force. The Wii U itself is just that as they hoped using the Wii brand again would get those fickle casuals to return. It obviously didn’t work since the Wii U hasn’t even surpassed the Gamecube in sales, much less equal the Wii’s sales.
Maybe people wouldn’t be so “butt hurt” over this if they actually released a metroid game from time to time. Nope, this is all we get (and all we’ll recieve for a while…it’s looking that way).

Last two generations we’ve seen four Metroid games, and after Other M (which wasn’t a bad game) I don’t really blame Nintendo for taking their time with another Metroid release.
I blame them. Nintendo should’ve been smart enough to tell that the sales of one metroid game doesn’t represent the entire fan bases’ interests in the franchise. Rather, fans just don’t like bad metroid games.
Again, fanboys being fanboys, other M wasn’t a bad game and it sold just as well as MP 3.

If you’ve even played other Metroid games, you would know Other M’s portrayal of Samus was horrible & it was a bad game on that fact. You are just being blinded by the awesome gameplay of Other M. I should know as I was also once blinded by the awesome gameplay & never really looked at the things wrong with the game.
I didn’t even like the gameplay and had a bunch of problems. When I got to the crane boss I got hit during the fucking INTRO. There was NOTHING I could have done; the boss got a free hit.
One of these days, the masochist in me will play through it again, show all the problems, talk about the problems, and then toss the disc into a fire pit. I found it to be that bad.
Some hate the story, some hate the gameplay, and some hate everything about it. I enjoyed both at the time but now I just enjoy the gameplay as I realize the story was bad on the Samus portrayal alone because they never even explained in-game why she was being that way. If they had given us a good reason in-game like the death of the last Metroid, that saved her life, made her question her role in wiping out what she thought was just a mindless species of killing machines, then maybe people would not have been in such an uproar of her freaking out when she came face to face with Ridley because everything leading up to it opened her up to weakness because her mind was bombarded by depression and/or despair. Oh & the fact Samus gave the traitor the nickname The Deleter, giving us the impression we’d have a few big battles with him later, was also very bad storytelling as they left that plot hole unresolved. (Apparently that damn crane fight with The Deleter was all we were going to get out of that subplot.)

I really don’t think it’s being “ungrateful” for us to be sick and tired of waiting for a new one. Hell, there’s nothing suggesting that they’ll be a new one in the future. Sure, Tanabe has said that this game fleshes out Sylax more and sets things up for prime 4. The thing is, is that why wasn’t it made already for the Wii u? Oh, that’s right, he couldn’t find a team to make it. What’s stopping that happen again for the NX?

People on this site actually believe Retro Studios had a choice on whether or not they HAD to design these mechs or not…
They are owned by Nintendo. Next-Level did not demand the mechs be designed by Retro. Nintendo told Retro to design the mechs for Next-Level, hence why they were in a “Supervisory position” over the mech designs and ONLY the mech designs.
So, not only were they forced by Nintendo (whether they liked it or not) to design the mechs, they were told to design the mechs in the style that Next Level was working with…. a.k.a chibi-style.
None of this is actually Retro’s fault. They are just part of the many small cogs that spin in the vast network called “Nintendo.” The big wigs who greenlit this Metroid project are the only ones to blame for this game (which wouldn’t be a big deal if we got a Metroid Prime 4 release at the same time as Federation Force, because FF is only hated on for the lack of MP4).
AND the visuals- more people have a problem with that than the gameplay and scenario and lack of a real MP4. Seriously, that looks NOTHING like what Prime is.
Well I guess I will put all my blame on Sakamoto for not knowing what the hell to do with the 2d Metroid games, Tanabe for not knowing what the hell to do with the Prime Metroid games and Nintendo for not knowing what the hell to do with the entire god damn franchise.
If we are lucky Team Sakamoto is secretly working on a 2d Metroid fusion sequel for 3ds. Of course IF we are lucky. This also confirms Retro is not working on Metroid Prime.

For example I haven’t gone to the gym consistently in 7 seven months but I have been doing finger tip push ups and jumping jacks everyday now I haven’t gone to the gym due to my being stuck in school mode and my laziness but I’m still exercising everyday whether I have to force myself or not and that’s because exercise is my most favorite thing to do period but when school starts in a few weeks I will start lifting 3 or 4 days a week while doing the fingertip push up and jumping jacks and I will add an ab exercise everyday of the week regardless if I lift or not
