Massive Update Today Brings A Boatload Of New Content To Splatoon

A free software update in the Splatoon game for the Wii U console brings a large amount of new content to the game today, including two new matchmaking modes, new weapon types, an increase to the game’s level cap and more than 40 pieces of new gear. Players will now be able to create a winning strategy and fight to be the best and most battle-tested squid squad around.

The new update introduces Squad Battle and Private Battle matchmaking options. In Squad Battle, players can participate in Ranked Battle rule sets with friends, rather than being teamed up with other players through a random selection. After a player creates a squad, friends can be recruited to form a team of two to four Inklings. Friends will always play together on the same team and battle against other squads at random.

In Private Battle, friends can splat it up in private, customizable matches. Two to eight friends can battle together by selecting their favourite map, mode and weapons. The number of participants ranges from 1v1 to 4v4, but teams don’t have to be even: If the host chooses, he or she can select a 1v4, 1v2, or any other combination of players.

With this robust new update also comes an increased level cap in both Regular Battle and Ranked Battle modes. After downloading the software update, players will be able to reach level 50 (raised from level 20) and rank S and S+ (both higher than A+).

While Inklings around the world are enjoying and mastering the current arsenal of weapons inSplatoon, two new weapon types will be available with the update, adding a new layer of strategy to the game. The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge blasts of all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type. In addition to the new weapons, more than 40 pieces of gear, including everything from a leather jacket to a sushi-chef costume, are coming to the various in-game shops in Splatoon.

Despite its size and scope, this massive update is not the end of the splat-acular free content coming to Splatoon. Following this update, more content will continually roll out through the rest of the summer and fall, including the Rainmaker Ranked Battle mode, additional maps and new weapons. More details about these additions will be revealed in the future.

  1. I honestly wonder how well this game really would have done if the Wii U wasn’t in such a severe game drought.

      1. But that doesn’t explain why Code Name STEAM failed. It was a new IP but look where it’s at. Even after getting patched, it’s still not selling like it should. Then again, we can blame the failure of that game on the fact Nintendo didn’t market it like they are doing with Splatoon. Splatoon is a perfect example of how well the Wii U could actually have done if it was marketed better years ago.

        1. >>>I think it had to do with them not marketing it like you’ve said and also that it doesn’t appeal to many except patriots in the US or RPG fanboys>>>

        2. Codename steam isnt really anything new gameplay wise.

Its fire emblem in 3rd person.

          Big deal.

          1. Splatoon isn’t really anything new gameplay wise.

It’s Call of Duty in 3rd person.

            Big deal.

            1. It’s more than CoD; it’s BETTER than CoD.

If you ever play the game, the first time you spray a wall to hide from an opponent and then pop back out to attack said opponent who thought you ran away and splat him, you’ll understand.

              1. *shrug* I just hate how he practically ridiculed my criticism by using Nintendo fanboy logic when Splatoon isn’t much different from Code Name STEAM because they both belong to a genre that can’t be changed too much without becoming an entirely new genre so they can both be called just clones when stripped down to the basics of being in a genre.

        3. What the other guy said and frankly with how long the turns took I couldn’t even get through the whole demo. I know they patched it but it left it’s mark on me.

        4. I tried the demo of CN:S and I didn’t really like it- I’d say it was too slow but I know about the update that speeds up enemy turns but that probably didn’t go into the demo as well.

It’s a shame as well- this came from the same devs as Fire Emblem Awakening and that game was near perfect.

          1. It sucks that Nintendo let STEAM fail while keeping Splatoon in the lime light. It’s like they let STEAM fail because it wasn’t as kid friendly as their precious Splatoon.
