Xenoblade Chronicles X OST Apparently Has Broken DRM

Reddit member CSFFlame is reporting that the official soundtrack CD for Xenoblade Chronicles X has broken and buggy DRM on it that can cause problems with your computer. The user recommends that people do not run it on their PC. Here’s all the technical details you need to know.

It mounts the encrypted folder on the Y drive, then edits the group policy for your computer to block system access to the drive, then edits the registry to hide the drive….

It does not revert these changes.

You will not be able to use the Y drive letter until you revert changes, and considering lots of enterprises use Z,Y,X and whatnot for mapped network drives, don’t try listening to this at work.

To revert (for Win7x64):

1) (Gain access to Y again) Use gpedit.msc and set this to disabled then back to not configured (you can’t see what it did and it says “not configured” because it did it in the registry only): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978514.aspx

2) Unhide Y

Use regedit and delete this key (or set it to 0, but it doesn’t exist by default): https://i.imgur.com/26Q5W1E.png

If you’re curious what it did, look here: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/148/

It’s a bitmask, and it hides the Y drive.

    1. it’s only something that happen if you run it on pc, it’s ether A. they didn’t take it out because the game doesn’t access the files or B. they put them in on purpose to cause a lockup so nobody can pirate the music

      1. Same here. I have well over 15,000 songs on my phone, and not once have I experienced a problem with the mp3 files themselves either.

  1. So now Nintendo is trying so hard to stop pirating that they’ll break your computer so that you can’t do anything to copy the music? It makes sense if they try this shit on Wii U since, they actually own the Wii U, but when they mess with your PC, that’s crossing a line.

  2. Wait a minute! Is this talking about the songs that come with the hard drive in the special edition or is it talking about playing the Wii U game on your PC?

    1. Well this sucks. I love OSTs and that was one of the main reasons I bought the special edition. And now I can’t even listen to it without screwing up my computer? I’m not one of those fans that think Nintendo is perfect but damn!

  3. CD? I think this is the USB soundtrack. Which that REALLY blows.

I just plugged it into my Chromebook and can’t copy/paste anything either. Wow, what a fail.

At least the little drive is cool looking. It’ll just be a display Collector’s piece now.

  4. Sickr this is in regards to the OST, there was no specification that it was the CD. I’m having the issue with the USB thumb drive so I believe that’s where the issue lies.

  5. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

*laughs* What? Ha ha ha… What!? Oh this is rich! I wonder who will be the first one to damage control this massive failure for Nintendo first… Hopefully no one because ANYONE who defends this really is a dumb, stupid, retarded, mindless fanboy.

Anyway, Nintendo better get their asses in gear & fix this on the double. Otherwise, I didn’t think my trust in them could be any more shattered!

    1. i dont think its nintendo but monolith soft studios, then again it may be nintendo. i think they should let people be able to copy music to any device and not worry about piracy. still waiting for the game to come in the mail because im a dumb-dumb for pre-ordering since march on amazon and too cheap to pay the 10% tax at a store.

They better think of something. Have people send them back in so Nintendo can get rid of the DRM bullshit. I don’t know why they put DRM on a flash drive to begin with. It’s sad that Nintendo would be one of the first game companies to put DRM that locks up someone’s computer on something that DRM like that shouldn’t even be on. Accident or not, it shouldn’t have been on it in the first place. :/

  6. The soundtrack program also disables all cut/copy/paste functionality while it’s running, even for things like your web browser or word processors; you simply can’t use your clipboard commands until you close the program, not even to copy and paste text. It’s terrible, frankly.
