          1. To each his own I guess. The 3D games of any series generally have a distinct advantage over their 2D counterparts in the number of possibilities that are available. But even if you think all the 3D titles are better, you would really put LttP behind every 2D Zelda title? The original LoZ had literally no story. You just started in the middle of nowhere and started fighting. And the dungeons in that game were so generic it was difficult to tell them apart.

              1. We’re opposites. I can’t stand playing through any 3D Zelda game, but I have a blast playing the 2D ones. They’re the only ones I look forward to now.

  1. I would probably place Donkey Kong Country 3 on there. You can’t even talk about the music in the game without people claiming that DKC2 or DKC3 GBA has the better music (I prefer DKC3 GBA). Also it has a bit of… Bad level design in some spots, where you are completely powerless to dodge an enemy/hazard coming in from off-screen.

I think it’s a great game, but it has many small problems that can just ruin the whole game for some (and I understand why). It was definitely rushed to meet a deadline (the N64 had already been released worldwide, and the game definitely lets you know), considering some poor design in some places, but I do think that it still holds up with at least DKC1 in terms of overall quality.

  2. Interesting top 10 idea, shitty debates though. The only one that actually had any decent points was the BioShock debates. They rest just sounded like you’re regular old IGN/GameSpot/kotaku comment section fanboy.

  3. The Last Of Us, to me, is easily the greatest story I’ve ever played in a video game. Again, I could argue that , to what I might consider, it’s quite possibly the greatest game of all time. I first played TLOU on the PS4 with the Remastered version. It’s a fantastic experience. It’s something that is and will be hard to replicate. If anyone doesn’t own a PS4 and need a reason to get one, The Last Of Us Remastered is my no. 1 reason to pick one up!!

    1. I’ll never understand how anyone can like that story. I’ve never seen a game with characters so stupid that I honestly wished they had all died at the end. They were that irritating, especially Ellie.

      1. I never understood how anyone couldn’t. All of these arguments about that game never made much sense to me and always came off as hating for the sake of hating. The mechanics I understand, they aren’t perfect, but the story was something else.

        1. To me, the story was the same bland survival horror story that everyone else does. Characters just seemed too pretentious and self-righteous.

Especially Joel. The decisions that guy makes are almost purely for his own self-interest, even at Elie’s expense a few times.

          1. Well yeah that’s exactly what the story is about. A relationship that develops were Joel care little to nothing for Ellie because he’s close off everyone from him. Hes supposed to be that selfish asshole who only cared about himself because everything he’s cared for has left or was taken away from him.

By the end that relation changes, and drastically, just when it looks like it’ll finish just as it started. With Joel carrying the only thing he cares for in his arms running for dear life, And BAM! Joel makes that selfish decision, because as a human, and a father he couldn’t loose his daughter twice. (Ellie beign a figurative daughter at this point.)

The reason that story connects with so many, its because it wasn’t a Hollywood ending, it was written from the point of view of a struggling damaged man and what he would really do in that circumstance. Non of us would let anyone take a love one, let alone twice.

Wow really? Who else has done this type of story? I would LOVE to read/see/hear more of these stories. Any recommendations?

(I’m not a survival enthusiast so I’m complete obviously when these type of stories, books, and movies come out.)

                  1. Lol no, no they don’t. Maybe LotR (I haven’t seen those movies, and probably never will so I have no idea what those are about) JP2 and TM3 are nothing even remotely close to what the last of us is lol good one though, I needed that laugh.

                              1. It’s because they’re trying to appeal the masses. In this generation, most gamers on the current gen consoles are more likely to buy those kind of games. There are lots of people interested in buying only AAA big budget games. Developers could invest in trying to be really creative and offer you something new. But they don’t want to lose to competition. If PS4 games stopped focusing on big budget games and tried to make more stuff like Little Big Planet, that would be great for a lot of hardcore gamers that are tired of the usual action game and whatnot. But I can imagine majority of gamers would pass on that resulting in them losing money. Just imagine if Nintendo was Sony and it as switched the other way around. Xbox gets the same multiplats as Playstation and the biggest thing that really stands out between the two are the exclusives. Most gamers want action packed shooters and great graphics. Ubisoft’s “The Division” being a good example. Imagine if the usual JRPG and platformers you get that most people don’t really pay attention to became more of a focus. You can imagine that people in the store would look into the PlayStation section and think “WTF is this BS? Xbox got games like Gears of War and Halo I could be playing! Why I would want this anime Japanese trash?” That’s just an example though, I’m not saying everyone is gonna do that. You look at Nintendo games and you see gamers already criticize those for graphics not being like PS4/Xbox One and because a ton of them are platformers like Mario. And like I said, rather than do what Nintendo is doing, they focus on games that more people are likely to buy which is why you get those shooters and cinematic movie like games often. The good news though is that the PS4 has attracted a lot of indie devs to the platform and every now and then, you’re gonna see an indie game pop up that’s not on the Xbox or have it’s main focus for the Sony system. And given the high number of people that own the console, they could get some pretty decent sales on their games despite that most of the usual gamers aren’t interested in them. Then that leads to them developing more great games for the system. Sadly, I’ve seen some people say “IndieStation4”. Cause they’re trying to joke about the lack of big budget games exclusives compared to the number of indies. Jokes on them though, there’s some great ones like No Man’s Sky coming to the console. If you support an indie dev enough, they’ll eventually get to the point where they can offer big budget games with fantastic graphics, but people look down on them because they don’t have “insert name of new shooter from franchise with new game out every year” or “insert new game from franchise that has been here for several years” in the title. Most people don’t care about the JRPGs we get, but luckily, people in Japan do. And they end up selling well over there and get enough profit to come over here. So at least there’s always those to fall back on whenever the latest big game is taking too long. But I’ll be playing Japanese games like Warriors Orochi 3, Toukiden Kiwami, and Dragon Quest Heroes regardless of how many action packed high resolution big name games come out. People need to stop trying to fuel their fanboy power and accept that people have different opinions. Also, NC, this comment is not directly related towards you. I’m not trying to hate or anything, just talking about gamers in general. I totally get it that you don’t prefer the PS4 games and that is fine. But my point was just to talk about the reason why you see so many games more focused on graphics and action. It’s our (gamers) fault that it turned out this way and you’ll find a person that is way more likely to walk out of Gamestop with Call of Duty Black Ops 3 than a single player focused game like a Tales of Zestiria.

-||If they focused their attention just as much on creative AAA weaponry as they do on today’s mainstream ones, I am sure the Sonyans would sell millions like the Electrons and Ubisians do||-

-||Both them and the Xbots have gotten so afraid of doing their own thing because they rely totally on the weaponry provided by mainly those two I mentioned earlier||-

-||Marketing as you know is a big part of a game’s success and all 3 are at fault with that in some capacity concerning their own games||-

                                  1. Oh. Yeah I guess I’ll give you that. I prefer to go by the book than the movies (situation is a bit different in the book), but since you’re talking about Hollywood…

-||Taking a more recent movie with survival conditions, then we have Resident Evil Retribution where the original Alice and one of her clones do everything to keep their “Daughter” safe||-

                      1. I’d have to play through it again to be sure, but I don’t remember Other M being a bad game; average maybe. The gameplay was generally good. The biggest problem with it was when you had to switch to first person view, but those times were limited. The overall story wasn’t bad either. It was just that they didn’t execute it well. (i.e. terrible script, bad voice acting, and unbearably long cutscenes) I’d say a second playthrough (when you can skip right through the cutscenes) is worth it.

I agree that Metroid 2 is more divisive though. Other M is generally viewed the same way by everyone.

                        1. Disagree there. It has no analog movement, dodging is broken, concentration is an extremely weird mechanic, level design is painfully simplistic, mobility upgrades are really dumbed down (Speed Booster, Space Jump, etc.) and, as you said, the pixel-hunts were terrible.

I don’t want to get into the story since it’d be like digging up the corpse of a dead horse just to beat it again, but if the writing, the plot, the characterization and the delivery don’t work, then the story is bad. It even contradicts most of the other games in the franchise generally, so even the idea behind it isn’t worth saving.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. Completed it on my first try and then went tried hard mode. It really had potential, they just needed to tweak a couple of gameplay mechanics and design scenarios worth exploring, not just maps with rooms placed in straight lines. And, of course, remove the story and work on the atmosphere.

Under another developer (because let’s face it, Team Ninja isn’t suited for this kind of genre) and with another director, it could give us an interpretation of ‘Metroid in 3D’ very different from Prime in focus. I’d say it’s worth a shot, especially if they design it around a full-fledged controller this time.

                          1. Like I said, I’d have to play through it again to give a better opinion on it. I do hope Nintendo try another game with similar mechanics though. Do it without first-person views. Allow Samus to fire missiles without having to stand still. We’ll see I guess.

                        1. Not one of Samus’s finest moments. I can’t even think of any Nintendo villains that’ve done that, let alone a hero.

It’s actually strange to think of how much more mature Metroid is compared to other Nintendo games. Metroid media generally shows some pretty dark stuff.

                  2. I tried getting through The Last of Us. But the whole structure of the game is so insanely repetitive. The story is wonderful, and the cutscenes are great. But the gameplay just bored me to death. I can only do so many cover-shooting and stealth sections that feel identical before it gets tiring. I have the same problem with Uncharted. Wonderful storytelling, but the gameplay is so bland.

So I can understand why someone wouldn’t like it.

                                    1. Can’t do that because I don’t have my PS4 anymore. It was stolen. I probably would have finished it by now. Takes me a long time every time I play cause I search for supplies in every area I can. Lol.

                                      1. |||Nintendo Dark Commander Quadraxis-NX Prime|||

-||The Xbot will be found and destroyed, such insolence is not tolerated by me even if you’re a Sonyan who’s weapon got stolen||-

                                        1. Well, on the bright side, I pretty much got it for free. That was when I traded in my Nintendo stuff to Gamestop and the value was enough to get one and a few games. If I had gotten less money, I would have gotten an Xbox One cause it was $50 less at the time. I was REALLY hoping I would have gotten enough for the PS4, but if I hadn’t, I wasn’t about to walk out of there with nothing. Lol.

                                            1. Basically, my stuff was over at my aunt’s house and while I was away, she was apparently evicted from her apartment due to lack of payment on rent. All her stuff had to be put outside and when I came back, her boyfriend who was living with her took the chance to take my system and sell it to someone. (He was not there only my aunt when I got back so it was pretty obvious) My entire gaming PC was over there as well with everything including the mouse and keyboard and I’m glad I had arrived to get that. If I hadn’t, something from there would’ve been stolen too. Which would’ve been terrible. The value of that stuff is like $1400.

                                    2. They have some good games, no doubt. Naughty Dog’s titles specifically are more cinematic than anything though. They make some good characters. I just wish they gave more attention to gameplay.

The only moment I really loved, from a gameplay standpoint, in any of those games was the train section of Uncharted 2. Very awesome.

Now, Bloodborne is an amazing PS exclusive to me. Wonderful, deep gameplay mechanics. I’m very excited for the Ratchet and Clank game, I love that series. I play games primarily for gameplay, so having only a story to keep my interest in TLOU just wasnt enough.

I hope that explained my point well enough. I feel like I wrote a book lol. I’m not bashing Sony or anything. But I’m also not a fan of everything they do. That goes for every developer honestly.

                              1. I half expected Sonic Adventure 2 to be up here because that game has more than enough of a broken base. Some argue whether it still holds up to this day while others say that it was no better than the first game. I can agree that the mech and treasure hunting levels sucked ass though.
