Check Out This Concept Art From The Rejected Super Mario Bros Comic

Archie Comics artist Ben Bates has shared a batch of concept art that had been sent to Nintendo a few years ago when Archie pitched a Super Mario Bros. comic to the company. Unfortunately, Nintendo rejected it. However, Bates has expressed that these are how he imagines a Mario comic would look like.

      1. We can get more than that in a crossover. Maybe the FOUR of them could get their own unique platformer, or 2D fighting game, starting not just nintendo all-star protagonists, but SEGA, Capcom, and Namco as well. Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, NiGHTS, Amigo, Billy Hatcher, Ristar, Ryu, Demitri, Guy, Edward Falcon from Power Stone, Taizo Hori, Klonoa, Gilgamesh, Jin Kazama, etc.

  1. This looks like it would have been the most radical shit ever. I can just imagine all the epic fan servicey things Archie could have done with it. We probably would have even seen a Mario x Sonic crossover eventually. But this pretty much confirms what we all suspect anyway; Nintendo doesn’t want anything fans want. They are strictly about what they want, the end.

    1. Yeah. That just about sums it up. Microsoft and Sony listen to their fans and make assloads of money. Nintendo has little more than contempt for its fans and instead cater to moms and dads looking for ways to connect with their kids.

      1. Then how come we have SSB, pocket monster-collecting games, and games that are bright and appealing on the eyes, when they don’t.

COD, Mass Effect, Fallout, Halo, Titanfall, Conduit, Portal, Gears of War. All lifeless shooters.

        1. *Ahem*

We have been asking, BEGGING even, for a new F-Zero game since the late 2000s. Did we get one? Nope.

We have been asking for a true Mario 64-esque platformer since the 3DS and Wii U launches. Did we get one? Nope.

Did anyone ask for an Animal Crossing Mario Party rip-off with broken gameplay and bad amiibo integration? No way in Hell- we had been asking for a true-to-form Animal Crossing that made full use of HD.

We asked for a new Metroid, 2D or 3D, that felt like a Metroid game in every aspect and that didn’t assassinate Samus’ established character in 2 hours of cutscenes. What did we get? A co-op FPS that does not star Samus and looks like Mega Blocks/chibi, something a darker universe like Metroid should NEVER be. Oh, and that might be all Metroid fans get for the series’ 30th anniversary.

          Did I miss anything, Quadraxis/Shackles?

  2. A comic would be a great format for Mario to go in! They could even do re-tellings of the video games if they’re worried about them doing something they don’t like. It’s a shame they didn’t approve it, it would’ve been cool. I imagine they had their reason though.

    1. I don’t disagree with that though- Mario has always been a (mostly) silent protagonist; it would be odd if he suddenly started speaking full sentences.

That could be said about a lot of other silent protagonists, like Gordon Freeman, for example.

      1. While I don’t give two craps about Half-Life, its not fair to expect an iconic character like Mario (Mr. Video Game/Nintendo Mickey Mouse) to remain silent. Miyamoto and Martinet should takes some notes from the late Captain Lou and Walker Boone.

  4. I also played bad ice cream 3 on hudgames at school, it was great. I was level 15 and I unlocked ice skating.
