As we all know the Pokemon series is a juggernaut and today the Pokemon Company has revealed just how many units the series has sold so far. In a recent press release the company announced that altogether the games have sold over 279 million units globally since the franchise launched in Japan twenty years ago. This figure is correct as of February 29th 2016. As you would expect that number also includes the Pokemon spin-off titles such as the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. However, the mainline series by itself has sold 201 million units. This includes the recently re-released Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.

And that doesn’t even include all of the used copies people bought (or new copies from private sellers). Not that it matters. Because those used copies were once some of these 279 million units. But still……
That’s more than every single gameboy model ever sold. Wow.
