The head of the Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, has spoken again about revisiting past Sonic the Hedgehog titles but says that the team currently has a strong desire to create “new games” in the franchise and therefore “deliver new surprises” to the fans. Mr. Iizuka also emphasised how much work actually goes into a remaster or a remake and he genuinely believes that the time would be better spent delivering new Sonic titles.
Back in the Wii era, there were some pretty adventurous takes on the series, such as Sonic and the Black Knight, where Sonic went on an adventure wielding a sword. It seems like there are many games like that which could be interesting to revisit through a remaster or more substantial remake.
Iizuka: We hear all sorts of requests from the fan community for remakes and remasters, such as people asking us to port Sonic Unleashed. But our resources are limited… Rather than using those limited resources to make remakes and remasters, we have a stronger desire to provide fans with new games and deliver new surprises.
With remakes and remasters, you’re essentially providing the same experience again. But these days, remaking an old game requires about as many resources as creating a new title. You have to remake all the graphics, and you can’t simply release the gameplay as it was back then because many things are deemed rough by modern standards.
I understand. Even changing the screen from 4:3 to 16:9 isn’t as simple as many might believe.
Iizuka: Exactly (laughs). So for now, I have a stronger desire to focus on new titles. That said, we do hear players’ concerns about certain games being unplayable, so I’d like to ask you to please wait a little longer.

Snicker
came in here fuming that all sega does is talk about sonic
but there’s some good stuff in here
why does he keep talking about remakes lol every month theres an iizuka article about a remake.
are the interviewers just that bad
that’s what i mean maybe it’s over reporting? otherwise he can stop now like we understand we’re getting sonic frontiers sequel
So basically, they just want you to play the modern games and insulted their older games, just like Capcom did, recently. After all, in their “logic”, Frontiers or Forces can easily replace the Adventure games, ain’t it right?
Bunch of bozos.
“Sonic Team boss says he’d rather surprise fans with more dogshit slop than give them games that have actual effort put into them.”
They don’t surprise anyone, everyone expects their new sonic game to be crap.
Ck off.
lmaooo
WRONG
I am not surprised, sonic has a messy history with ports. From Sonic 1 on the gba to Sonic colors ultimate, there have been a ton of strange and bad ports. But the problem is they won’t stop doing weird remasters like sonic frontiers defenitive edition or sonic x shadow generations which was an actual good remaster.
I don’t want every new entries of the franchise to be a total crap and waste of money on game development.
Well, the vast majority of games that came after the “adventure” series have been garbage.
It’s funny how you refer to Iizuka as “Sonic Team Boss” like he’s some foreman who’s word over the blue hedgehog is law (with zero grounds for negotiation).
Yet Sonic x Shadow Generations exist (also Sonic Colors Ultimate). But yeah, if there are ways to make the original games better (especially flawed ones that would cause problems going forward, like Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, the storybook games, Colors, Lost World, Generations, even the Riders series, and of course Sonic 2006), then I’m all for it.
AFAIC, various Sonic games need to be reimagined (fundamentally FIXED) before we’ll ever be ready for new games again. Otherwise, we’ll just be dealing with more churned out slop heavily tied to one or two stupid directions, all because no one had a fair say and Iizuka continues to distance the franchise from the Dreamcast era where these games were last felt like Sonic games (and not new-tens zoomer cartoons), or more specifically, further distances the franchise from the guy who gave us the “magic” the two Adventure games had: Yuji Naka (even if you disagree with his backdoor behavior and recent actions). “Write off the person, not what he created”.
That is exactly his role. Heroes has no flaws.
Speak for yourself, and lack of taste:
Then just leave it to a different team who’s willing and capable of doing it. Clearly there’s interest if remasters are constantly being talked about, Yakuza and Persona both have proven that remasters and remakes brings in profits for Sega.
Care to explain more about it?
No.
I wasn’t talking to you.
But you are a tard.
If sonic team doesn’t want to do remakes, could they at least please give us ports of games from the adventure Era?
I would love for sonic adventure 1 and 2 to be available on modern consoles Namely Nintendo switch 2
Indeed. I am still surprised they didn’t port SA2 to modern consoles 2 years ago to tie in with the Sonic 3 movie, considering they were really pushing the Year of Shadow- making it easy to access his debut game should have been a no-brainer.
I am even more surprised that during the year of shadow, we didn’t get a remaster or remake of shadow the hedgehog. But instead, they remastered generations which was nice to have for modern consoles, but shadow the hedgehog is a great game hidden in mediocre one. If they remade it, it could be good. Might be some of the most missed potential in recent memory for me.
Can you guys please for the love of god stop posting random words and quotes from/about the sonic people? Sonic hasn’t been good since the Genesis. Maybe Dreamcast/GameCube. Regardless of this fact all of these posts like this are completely pointless. How many times are you going to post the same thing?
They should then make a sonic dating game to get the old fans back. Would love to interact with Amy rose and see some bitties if you know what I mean.
Those only work for undefined protagonists and sad people on the internet.
Are you not a sonic fan?
This is a shame cause if Sega did the Ocarina of Time treatment to Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 they would be swimming in cash for a long while with a lot of happy fans. Mania was cool for retro fans, but sonic hasn’t had a good 3d game since Sonic Adventure.
