The guys over at GameXplain have posted a new video showing how you can cause a mysterious train whistle sound to play while editing a stage in Super Mario Maker. To trigger it, a player has to rapidly move around the spike object within the basic Ground stage while in the New Super Mario Bros U mode. All the questions you probably have are legitimate: Why is this news? Why does that matter? Well, to answer that question, we have to ask another, more pressing one: Why is the whistle there?
Most of the other easter eggs in Super Mario Maker pay homage to the series in some way to increase that oft-felt sense of nostalgia. So far, no one can give reason to this little secret; but maybe one of you readers have a guess? To hear the sound and learn how to replicate it, you can check out the video below.

Well there are those Bowser train levels…
Spirit tracks?
Maybe for the pointless toy train easter egg in Super Mario Galaxy? A seemingly pointless reference to another seemingly pointless reference? You also hear that sound when you press one of the letters in the main title screen, but I forget which one.
