US retailer GameStop are undoubtedly happy as they have revealed that the Nintendo NX will use physical media and that they will be able to “play a role in it, our pre-owned business will also play a role.” However, it’s still not clear whether that it will be traditional discs or cartridges. As you probably already know cartridges were rumoured to be the media that the platform will use and judging from GameStop CEO Paul Raines he isn’t entirely sure whether it’s going to be disc based or cartridge based. Guess we shall have to wait and see.
“I would say that the fact that there are rumors of that type just confirms for you that this is an important console for next year. It will have physical media, we will play a role in it, our pre-owned business will also play a role. So we’re excited about that.”
“The only difference would be on the refurbishment and pre-owned side. And actually, cartridges are much simpler to refurbish and repackage. So there is somewhat a little bit of an advantage if it went in that direction on used.”
Thanks, minibitminibit
That’s a huge relief. long live physical media.
One bullet dodged, many more coming. Well done, Nintendo.
||The only bullet we need to dodge…is the absense of Metroid…||
That’s another one, yeah. They can’t stay tone-deaf forever, sooner or later they’ll have to give the franchise another chance.
||That’s the only one I need dodge…
Do you like my new head?…||
Yeah, forgot to mention it earlier. Very appropriate for your new title too.
||Decided to create myself instead of waiting for High Command…||
It reminds me of Gorea from Metroid Prime Hunters.
It’s good to see you ’round these parts again, Commander.
||I upgraded myself and yes, I’m my new old back again…||
Or F-Zero
And Mother
And Kid Icarus
… metroid is just a small piece of the large pool of ip games Nintendo doesn’t use.
||Metroid is my core, therefore the most important one to me…||
I know we never agree and I say some reckless shit, but for an actual die hard fan like yourself, how can you not be mad that Nintendo killed metroid? After other M, it was over for metroid. Not to mention, this is a common trend for Nintendo. They pitch a stupid ass idea for an IP that shouldn’t be touched. They go against what fans want out of that IP, they still do it they way, kill the IP, and when it doesn’t sell, they never want to make the game again blaming the fans for not buying it. They did it with F-Zero, they did it with Star Fox on GameCube and now with the Wii U version. Paper Mario is next… how can you even stand by Nintendo green lighting retro to do a donkey Kong returns hd gams with just new water levels instead of a brand new metroid that could have been amazing with the Wii U gamepad. Actually using the pad.
||The NX will decide where I’ll stand…||
And if it’s crap? I’ll send you my PSN account info and we can share play together. Haha.
||I’d rather fall with them than serve corrupted filth…||
Only corruption I see is Nintendo and killing off us core gamers. That’s why they give is games like Paper Mario Color Trash and Federation Force. The best metroid game ever!
||Being lost is not the same as being corrupted…||
Sorry, I forgot… who the flying f told Nintendo to green light metroid for DS?!?
||That’s not Metroid…||
Tell that to Nintendo.
||I will if they ever stain my core like that again…||
Mother already ended. Nothing is there to be done.
Another amazing game that’s in a valut, catching frigging dust.
Fingers crossed they use something like a 3DS cartridge but with more space to store the full game instead of having to install the whole thing.
Not relevant to the article, but so true. https://www.google.ca/search?q=dlc+hamburger&biw=1426&bih=686&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiRiOCIi7fNAhVLElIKHT1lAO8Q_AUIBigB#imgrc=idx_uof3woWyFM%3A
^ With other companies, not Nintendo.
I buy my games from everywhere else but gamestop, so I honestly hope gamestop goes out of business! They are the worse game distributors in the world!
It’s slowly taking shape, but blame those idiot moms who knows nothing about games, go to GameStop on black Friday when they have no deals, and spend tons when best buy and Walmart sell at a cheaper price.
I would love to see the devs of No Man’s Sky develop a Metroid game with similar exploration and space battle mechanics as No Man’s Sky! If you compare No Man’s Sky to how the Metroid series is supposed to make the player feel isolated both games have similar mechanics as it is, so why not allow fans to explore space as Samus in her iconic battleship while traveling to strange unexplored worlds, fighting space pirates, hunting and competing for bounties against other bouty hunters, and finally fighting against the Galactic Federation!
I meant bounty, not bouty! This site needs an edit solution for posted comments!

My own wishlist for IP announced with the console:
Zelda
3D Mario
Original IP from Retro
Diddy Kong Racing 2
3D Metroid
Beyond Good & Evil 2 exclusive
Super Smash Bros, NX
Pokemon Eclipse (remix of sun/ moon)
Earthbound/ Mother collection
New IP from the Warioware team
Collab or 2 with Sega
Super Mario RPG 1.5 (remake/ sequel to original)
Exclusive game from vanillaware
the necessary 3rd party support
doubled down focus on indies
A direct showcasing the console with a list like this and a reasonable price tag would make the entire industry take notice.
Sounds like a good list. I don’t know about BG&E2 exclusive, and a pokemon main story game will never come to a home console, but other than that, this list would be totally amazing to come true.
Gamestop has said a lot of things that weren’t correct…
@Leech:
-Why do you want all those remakes?
-Check the internet! A Super Mario RPG 1.5 was already made…. (Not an official game, mind you)
@The Collector
Yes, I agree with your card/cartridge theory.
Wasn’t ever worried that they wouldn’t use physical media lol, Nintendo isn’t stupid
Return of cartridges!
Honestly, most Reliable Source to Date. A Game Retailer.
Makes me a little more likely to buy an NX:
If the NX ends up using cards like 3DS game cards, then I don’t consider it cartridges. When I hear the word “cartridge”, I think about NES, SNES and N64 games. Not 3DS game cards.
Will the NX finally play DVD’s and Bluray?
||Unnecessary waste of space and resources…||
…How? It would be really Beneficial to play DVD’s and Bluray off the console.
||This is about gaming, not multimedia nonsense…||
A gaming console can also be a home multimedia device. It would increase the convenience and usability and overall sales of the console by having features that have been available to other consoles for years.
||This is why the gaming world is pathetic today, multimedia nonsense that has nothing to do with gaming, adding unnecessary cost to the machines themselves…||
I don’t see why it’s such an issue. Adding a Blu Ray or DVD reader wouldn’t add too much of a cost to the System. The functionality would really outweigh it. One of the biggest sufferings of the console in my opinion is it’s lack of usability. When I first got the Wii U, there wasn’t a lot of games I wanted to play and It kind of just gathered dust. When I got a PS4, the same thing happened, but I had much more usability on the console while waiting for some games. Basically, If I could use it as a device for Media as well, It would’ve gotten a lot more use out of it.
||Now if they put that effort on games, wouldn’t have those issues at all…||
Very true. If they actually made stellar games for the console on release, I wouldn’t have suffered as well.

I think cartridges are the one thing that could give Nintendo an edge over the competition.
