Michael Pachter Advises That The NX Will Be ‘Dead In The Water’ If It Costs $399

Online publication GamingBolt recently had the chance to speak to Wedbush Securities electronics analyst Michael Pachter regarding Nintendo’s upcoming console the NX.

GamingBolt asked him about where the NX fits in with the upcoming launch of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One Scorpio, and he noted that the system’s price in the market would be a make or break factor in the console’s success.

“If the NX is really a handheld with a docking station, it could have trouble getting noticed,” Pachter explained. “I think that NX will sell well if it gets third party support, and in order for that to happen, it has to be something that publishers think will sell well.  It’s still impossible to have a forecast when we don’t actually know what it is or what it will cost.  If it’s a console and costs $199, it will sell extremely well; if it’s a handheld and costs $399, it’s dead in the water.  The odds are that it’s something in between, but I don’t want to guess until I see what it is.”

There has been no word on how much the NX will cost as of yet, and details on the new console have been sparse. The rumour mill has been full of predictions and speculation, but solid details on price and specifications are yet to be revealed.

          1. You left three replies on one comment, each of which said the exact same thing phrased differently.

Find something to do with your time.

You just don’t get it, do you. The purpose of biological lifeforms is dependent on their environment. Earth for example: the ecosystem there creates resources specific to that environment, and the creatures there were born in a very unique and specific way to take advantage of those resources. It’s just that those greedy humans have taken it all for themselves, throwing everything off balance. Go back to space RadioShack or space best buy to get your spare parts. It seems you have a lot of loose screws.

                        2. Seriously, what are Sony and Microsoft gaining by simply boosting processing of their consoles? There is no reason to buy if if you already have a Xbone/PS4. The New 3DS added a joystick, amiibo support, stable 3D, and trigger buttons as well as a boost to processing. The NX is going to be HUGE. I can’t wait.

                          2. nothing and this FACT is ignored by deranged fanboys

the same logic applys to the controllers what does anybody gain with 5 gen old outdatded controls NOTHING THEY GAIN NOTHING

BUT THE FANBOYS WILL INSIST THIS IS SOMEHOW CORE GAMING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!!!!

                      2. He says if it is a console and is 199 it will sell well (no brand new console would or could be that cheap if it is going to up the power and be ready for 3rd party games) and if it is a hand held at 399 (and in this case a hand held that also plays on your tv) 399 doesn’t seem absurd if, IF, it is a great system.

I see his logic, but don’t agree with it. He also admits his ignorance in the end, so there’s that.

                      3. THIS GUY KNOWS NOTHING WHATS SO EVER

PACHTER LOVES THE WII U BECAUSE IT FAILED,AND HATED THE WII WONDER WHY OH YEAH ITS SUCCESS…..

                          1. You made me scratch my head.

Alright, you have a good point. Why does Nintendo always like to the clown sit on the meeting’s desk while everyone else is wearing suits?

Really don’t have an answer to that.

                      4. Oh, wait… The NX can’t swim? D:

                        It’s not water proof?

Geez, Nintendo… Every console should have those capabilites nowadays.

                        T.T

                      5. Or better yet, if the NX doesn’t:

                        – Have a GPU capable of displaying 8K for games
                        – 2 TB of RAM
                        – Makes you pancakes
                        – Cures cancer

It’s not going to sell well.

… and he gets PAID to do this bullshit!?!? Wow! If that’s the case, I may as well quit my job and sign up!

                      6. I agree. $400 would be way too much, whatever NX is. Microsoft and PS4 already have expensive, powerful consoles out there and most gamers (and non-gamers) are more than satisfied with those. No point in throwing a console out there that directly competes with those consoles, especially on a price-level.

                      7. you guys need to stop believing in rumors, i did a while back and yes most of the rumors were interesting and i want them to be true but i had to stop believing in rumors because i makes people expect too much. im not saying don’t look away from rumors, the only rumor one should believe is an official reveal from the horse’s mouth, not some journalist, especially that dumbass pachter.

                      8. Figures that out of all the recent articles I sent in the only one that’s actually posted is Pachter’s.

To the topic I think it’ll be in the $250-$300 range. Just a gut feeling.

                      9. Well, From a strategic standpoint, If the NX is a handheld with TV compatibility, It would have to be competitively priced, since xbox one s is $299, and I don’t think people would pay more than that for a handheld unless the NX is significantly impressive. So yeah, I would think this is a fair assumption.

                        1. amen to that. that is like a restaurant announcing a new burger not mentioning what kind nor what price and he says that its ‘dead in the water if its priced a $30’. nintendo has not once mentioned what price it will be.

                      10. Hmm, gotta disagree with you Patcher (and you know I’m usually on your side). If the NX is a “Wii U”, then it could cost $99 and it would be dead in water regardless. However, if the NX is a TRUE next generation experience (if it can outperform both the Scorpio and PS4Pro), then $400 seems like more than an appropriate price for the best experience (these consoles ain’t cheap to make, mate). It does help that they pick the best price adequate profit and most importantly: THIRD PARTY SUPPORT AT LAUNCH.

                      11. If the NX is a handheld and a console and has up to date tech and you can take this out and about, and is also competiable to a Apple Ipad or other tablets it is worth that much.

                      12. while I believe the price should be about 250-300$ we dont really know what it is yet. we dont know what it well be bundled with (or anything ) so for him to at this is a bit silly as he is putting a price tag on a box, yet has no idea what is in the box.

that said I do believe that the rumors of the device should amount to a price tag of 250-300$ , the key well be to have many new games coming to the system, and a decent launch library at the start. if it becomes backwards compatible with your digital Wii U/ 3DS games that well help A LOT. since you could buy a device and carry all those games over.

                      13. Article’s title, very misleading, yes! What he says makes much more sense if you read the actual article. But if it’s as powerful as a PS4 Pro and it’s also a very well made hybrid console with the home console aspect being the focal point with the ability to take it on the go like a handheld with the handheld aspect being a close secondary focal point, $399 would make perfect sense. If Nintendo doesn’t mind losing money with the first couple million consoles sold, I guess they could lower the price to 300 bucks. If it can sell 20+ million or more, they can easily make up for the loss of selling the console for 100 bucks less than the actual price.

                      14. If it’s on par with a ps4 and has handheld too then I think that’s justified at 399 which I hope it is just because it will be lagging behind when the new generations come if not. I wonder if Nintendo will ever make a superior console again however, it seems like those days are long gone even though I do hope it has great specs but the chances of it being greater than ps4 pro and Scorpio are really low honestly given their track record as of late

                        1. It doesn’t need to be close to Pro or Scorpio since the base models will still be supported. Somewhere between XB1 and PS4 could be a nice sweet spot.

                          1. I get what your saying and that’s true for now. But what about for the inevitable next generation? Since Nintendo is now stuck in this space of releasing in between generations I don’t think that simply being as good as a Xbox one will last too long. Maybe being as strong as a regular ps4 can save it for some time but it won’t for the next generation

                            1. Maybe that could work in Nintendo’s favor. If they follow the 5 year life cycle that means NX 2 will come in 2022. In thinking the official PS5 will be 2019, but here’s the thing. There’s always an overlap between generations where third party games are still made for the older systems with slight improvements for the newer ones. It seems to me that we just started seeing most games become mostly PS4/XB1 exclusive with no PS3/360 ports roughly in the past year. So the NX 2 could potentially come out right when games are moving completely to PS5 and the next XBox. Most of the games coming out those first few years could still come to NX. By Nintendo releasing their equivalent console later than Sony and Microsoft it could mean a lower price at launch since it’ll be using “last gen” hardware. This is all speculation of course that assumes the NX will be successful and that third parties would be interested.

                      15. To be completely honest, I believe that Patcher is right about this one. The fact remains that if the NX is to be sold as a handheld gaming device, regardless of it being a fusion device, the price will need to be somewhere lower than 300 dollars. 250 dollars being the ‘sweet spot.’
What this means for power and support–I cannot say for certain. However, if the device is 300 dollars or above that amount, people will be turned off to the product due to the fact thar there are cheaper alternatives out there, and of course, there exist millions of phones and tablets that are already in children’s hands and already infinitely more useful than a console-handheld fusion, gaming device.

                      17. let me predict something… here goes nothing: “if the NX is a water-cooler and costs more than $2.000 it won’t sell well, but I want to see it first…”

                        1. It all really depends on certain factors: what exactly is Nintendo NX , how much the controller cost, how powerful is NX, and does it include a game. IF it’s exactly how eurogamer describes it them yes $400 is too much.
