It is no secret that Nintendo isn’t ruling the gaming industry anymore. However, one market research group seems to believe Nintendo’s role in the industry is pretty much over. Technavio has recently released their forecast of the game industry for the next four years. While they predicted the market would grow exponentially, it seems Nintendo wasn’t on their radar. Their list of “key” market players – featuring Sony, Microsoft, Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts – notably snubbed Nintendo. While Nintendo did appear alongside Sega under other prominent vendors, it seems harsh to exclude the Japanese console maker. What do you think of Technavio’s decision? Tell us below.
Nintendo’s Future In Gaming Disregarded By Market Research Group

Well, crap. Nintendo IS doomed after all.
They are are doomed why? because some people said so
Yes, the NX is actually just a revolutionary coffin for themselves.
If the NX doesn’t blow away the market, it very well might be. Nintendo is too big to be Doomed, but if they fuck up the NX, we could see a major shift in direction, possibly away from gaming. Their gaming division could be Like Sega, while the rest of the company moves on to other entertainment Possibilities.
The Curse of the Wii is nearly at an end, the casual money burnt away in ridiculous attempts to replicate the Wii Hardware sales. Nintendo will either begin heading the right direction, or they will morph all together. We will know within a year Nintendo’s fate.
I agree, I feel if(and only if) the NX Bombs, I think Nintendo Should Adopt Disney’s Licensing Strategy(rather than go 3rd Party) on Videogames, Movies and TV and Team up with other Entertainment companies(like NBCUniversal and even video game companies to an extent). once that happens, Nintendo Will become the least of our worries in favor of worrying about the developer(“cough” Sean Murray “Cough” ) or Movie Maker(“Cough” Uwe Boll “cough”) misusing the Nintendo IP’s and end up Contributing more Damage to the Gaming industry’s status Quo, resulting in a hot mess like “No Man’s Sky”.
I’m Keeping my hopes in Check, If the NX succeeds, then It would be a good thing. If it doesn’t, Well I’m hopeful they’ll adopt disney’s Licensing Strategy or Team up with Microsoft or Steam, rather than just Go 3rd party or team up With Sony(who Made a lot of missteps that past 2-3 months(especially over DMCAing Leaks over No man’s Sky and weeks after that, the PS4 slim and raising the price for PSN Plus)
To be fair, ever since their emergence on the home console market with the NES, Nintendo has defined their position as an ‘entertainment’ company rather than a gaming company. Their direction towards games exemplifies this.

I think that the release of the NX and what it’s capable of will change these Technavio guys’ outlook on Nintendo. It’s too early in the game to give up Nintendo before they’ve had a chance to showcase their next gen console.
Who really cares about changing thier positions. Nintendo has announced Mario Run which more than likely will dominate mobile gaming, and the NX is a mystery so far. I think Technavio takes a huge risk to thier companies credibilty by keeping Nintendo out of thier prediction. If Nintendo does happen to make another Wii type of success story, then how could you ever take anything Technavio says seriously ever again. It would be a huge blemmish on thier credibility… It’s like a weatherman saying it will be clear skies all week and it ends up raining five days in a row. Oh well, Ive never heard of them anyways.
I completely agree. There must be a reason why they’re pretty much unheard of; they probably just make baseless claims, instead of well researched opinions.
You must have good meteorologists, where you live, that you can usually rely on them. The weather forecasters where I live often get the weather wrong; even for multiple days in a row, but maybe the weather is hard to predict here? I don’t listen to them anymore XD
Well that seems to just show they don’t know what they’re talking about. They don’t even list Valve at all, either as a key player or a prominent vendor. That tells me they’re clueless, and you’d be better off getting your advice from elsewhere.
Agreed. Valve isn’t going away any time soon, and neither is Nintendo.
My thoughts: who are these people?
I am not sure if it is ok to swear here, i dont wanna break any rules.
More than enough people said fuck more than they actually do it.
So it’s cool to say any word here mate.
It’s funny that I could tell you were Australian without even reading your username.
I get that alot mate. Even when roaming outside my slopey neighborhood.
xD
They just proved that their “analysis” is uneducated and useless. How can you make such a big statement right before a major player is announcing a new system (that is rumoured to become a big success)?! That move is very amateurish. They just ridiculed themselfs. I feel a little Michael Patcher vibe here, does he work for the company?
Par for the course. If people aren’t doomsaying Nintendo, they’re just not talking about Nintendo.
Seems a bit early to predict before we even know what the NX is. Let’s not forget the huge reaction they got last E3 by only showing one game.
This article is fucking bullshit. Nintendo is still the largest video game company in the world. The fuckhead who wrote the article probably is a sexually frustrated SJW feminazi anti-video gamer with an agenda against the video game industry
what in the hell…
Those guys are bunch of idiotic idiots. Have they not seen the positive reactions the upcoming Zelda has gotten? I bet they think it’s not enough. They’re just a bunch of idiots.
@Darknova3529: ?
Anyone that disregards Nintendo automatically loses all credibility.
Nintendo is still a key player in the video game industry. I do not agree with everything they do, but it would be foolish to count them out yet. After all, they have not gone down yet after all these years in the video game industry.
Well to be honest, the main reason for that is because Nintendo’s pockets run deeper than the ocean. If they were any other developer, they would’ve been bought out or gone bankrupt by now.
Technavio = TMZ = tabloid bullshit
Nintendo will continue to live for the NeXt four years and beyond!
||*4 billion years…||
The fact that I’d never heard of these guys before proves just how prominent they are, which is not at all.
Agree , and the fact that MNN is reporting this is a bigger news story in itself in my opinion lol.
Never heard of them either. They probably haven’t seen the trailer for Breath of the Wild. Even if they did, they’d probably praise it but say it isn’t enough. They just wait. We already know the next Smash Bros. may come to the NX once released. Then they’ll be sorry.
If Nintendo isn’t a key player, Sony or Microsoft won’t know what to copy for the next gen of consoles meaning they will just be under powered PCs with no real innovations.
That is what Nintendo gets for ignoring us, NX is doomed and so is the big N. People has lost their hopes because Nintendo keeps being silent, they keeps ignoring us by not giving us what we what or hear us.
Have they not seen Breath of the Wild?! Someone link these dumb dumbs to the trailer. Maybe then they’ll feel bad about not including Nintendo.

Nintendo’s influence on the world of gaming is an important cog. They may not be the powerhouse they once were, my theory (which I don’t feel is an inaccurate one) is because I feel gamers have been duped into accepting a difference in what gaming and game design is supposed to be. Intuitive game design has taken a backseat to sheer size and scale, bells and whistles, and lots of unlockables. Rewarding a gamer for doing not much other than following directions is not creative game development. The day Nintendo is gone from major console manufacturing is when gaming is truly dead.
Why do you guys even put stuff like this on your site. We’re all fans of Nintendo here and we don’t give a damn what people or market turds say.
Nintendo “won” E3 this year with a single game. They’re definitely going to be relevant for a little while longer, at least.
Well I can’t actually read the report (you’re required to buy a $2500 user license to access it). I don’t see how they can possibly say that Nintendo won’t be a key player in the next 4 years though. They had a bad console generation immediately after having their best console generation. They greatly impacted the market by introducing motion controls. How can you rule them out?
I also assume they’re talking about the overall market and not just the console market when they say the gaming market will grow exponentially. I personally don’t see the home console market growing any larger. We just came off the biggest console generation ever. About 260 million home units were sold. Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii and I know for certain that a LOT of people bought multiple 360’s due to the high failure rate of the system. There’s no way this generation (XBONE, PS4, WiiU) will get anywhere near that. Obviously the Handheld market is the same way. We went from 230 million handhelds (PSP and DS) to 75 million (3DS and Vita).
$2500 license? Is that a typo? If not, who would pay that just to read articles? How in the world could they still be in business with such an outrageous price?
I don’t think it’s a typo. I guess these market reports must have some valuable information.
Geez. Too rich for my blood.
That’s pocket change.
Really? You can be my sugar momma then haha.
Lol.
they assume nintendo is not relevant because they have the 1980’s mindset of nintendo is for kids only. assuming nintendo is not relevant will get you killed, metaphorically. i know that nintendo has had bad thing going for them even though some of them were caused by them but they are relevant and always will be.
So many butthurts XD
Xbox and PS4 have laid out a road map that is solid, and people know they will deliver. Nintendo doesn’t even have a road map, god knows if their 5 year old 3DS will replaced by Holiday 2018, or whether their little hybrid console will even compete against mid-gen upgrades.
Its sad when everyone else is doing ‘mid-gen upgrades” that are massive, and Nintendo is doing a full gen upgrade and will likely still be weaker than PS4/One, let alone Neo/Scorpio.
Either way, Nintendo’s uncertainty is losing them tons of brownie points.
Nintendo may not have revealed their plans for the future yet but seeing as they said they would reveal the NX this Fall, don’t you think this company should have waited to post this report until then? I also wouldn’t call Sony’s plans completely solid. They’re taking a big risk with VR. It’s a completely untested technology in the home console market. And the pre-reception of the Neo hasn’t been stellar across the board. I wouldn’t call Microsoft’s plans solid either, at least not until we see exactly what Scorpio is. The only thing we really know about it is that they said it’ll be able to process at 6 Tflops. A high price point could easily kill the system.
To say something like that after the massive hit that was Pokemon Go is quite funny if you ask me. Never count Nintendo out. It would be foolish.
The fact that games like Mario Kart 8 sell more than the Uncharted and Halos of this world, on a system with a much smaller instal base tells a different story as well. The 3DS sold very well too.
Nintendo has the most iconic characters in gaming. Gaming companis would kill for such hit franchises. Franchises that have never lost their relevance in 30+ years which is probably one of the biggest achievements in the industry.
You can’t take a study about gaming seriously that obviously doesn’t have a long term perspective and ignores it’s roots and history.
And why the #@% can’t I edit my posts around here? It’s typo hell on my phone sometimes :)
They’re not out, but they do need to knock NX out of the park. Wii U is looking too much like Nintendo’s Saturn at this point.
All Sony and Microsoft does is use Nintendo like a crunch. If Nintendo’s new unique way to play is a success, competitors copy it. If it is a fail, they see what Nintendo did wrong and do exact opposite. Lets see Sony step out their safety zone for once.
||They know nothing about the great design The First Order has in store, which will decimate their existence…||
Everyones talking about games but the systems still sell like shit.
YES PEOPLE, NINTENDO MAKES GOOD GAMES. Doesnt mean they are still big.
NES – 69m
SNES – 49m
N64- 32m OR 31m
Gamecube – 24m
Wii – (Luck with motion controls and casuals) – 101m
Wii U – 12m as of now.
NX -??? we’ll see
This ^ is why the people didnt add them. They been losing costumers for the longest.
Yeah, Wii was all luck. Wasn’t planned, they thought everyone would hate motion controls, they wanted it to sell terribly, and hoped it wouldn’t attract all kinds of gamers.
Yea, they thought Wii U would attract casuals too but that didnt work.
Lets see how NX goes.
I get your comment and agree with almost all of it. I just don’t think calling the Wii “lucky” is accurate. It was a slam dunk.
The Wii U is a completely different case than the Wii imo. What I think happened was that Nintendo expected the Wii to do well, but didn’t expect anywhere near the amount of success it had and as a result they were overwhelmed by it. So when it came time for another console, instead of moving on to a new idea they doubled down on the original concept. There are people within Nintendo including Kimishima who admit that they never expected the U to sell well. I don’t expect them to make the same mistake again.
It should also be noted that while Nintendo console sales have steadily declined, the Wii U was their first main console that was not profitable for them.
Didnt they announce Wii U turned profit like 1 or 2 years ago.
Yeah they made a net profit in both 2013 and 15. What I meant was that the Wii U marked the first time Nintendo saw a “red” year since they entered the video game business. 2012 was the first year they posted a net loss.
They sound like the types of people who have been saying Nintendo is irrelevant for about a decade now. It’s best to just ignore them.
I honestly would have waited for the NX announcement, before giving a verdict on this, if I were them.
I don’t want to see Nintendo die. They have all the best IPs.
Well I am a bit surprise about this analysis. Yes Nintendo is not #1 in video gaming industry and I don’t think they will be any time soon. But I believe they are in the process to expand their business in some area I don’t like (mobile “gaming”) and make more profits.
Alo another factor to take into account is despite the rise of mobile gaming, nintendo do pretty well in portable gaming (they are not losing money). Mobile gaming is an area Sony and Microsoft don’t focus too much on at the minute and unless I am prove wrong they did not make as much profits as Nintendo despite Sony and Microsoft having the hardware and the know how.
And even if I am not fan of the NX (concept) even me I can’t tell if at the end I will change my mind and embrass the device. Nobody not at the minute how good or bad the NX will be.
Furthermore Sony and Microsoft don’t make that much profit despite saling much more than Nintendo. Patcher (yeah I Know quote him) always suggested that Nintendo should do like them which is saling the hadware at lost and try to get the money back via the software sales (stupid idea if you ask) . But at the end it does not serve them very well and it took them 10 decades to make some real money (PS3 come to my mind).
In the long run and my personal perception, I think Nintendo will be much in the business and more profitable company than Sony and Microsoft. Again I don’t have access to the information they have but just a Pokemon type of successs in the mobile world with a game where Nintendo will have 50% of the profits and they will have plenty money to face another Wii U failure which again by what we know did not lose money but damage the brand reputation.
If they’d show the NX they may be taken more seriously. How are you going to push sales on your current console or handheld when the new one is rumored to replace both? If the NX proves to be as awesome as some of the rumors hint then I don’t think they’ll have any problem. I just want to see a console functioning at the level of the other two so Nintendo can be included in multi-platform releases again.
Meh, I don’t find this surprising.

All Nintendo has to do is just add one more agenda to what they are already doing and that is make a console that will blow Sony and MS’s future consoles out of the water with a more powerful console! If they are concerned about pricing I’m pretty sure we passed that whole “It’s too expensive” argument, especially since Nintendo is known to make people go out and spend another $100-$200 on accessories like A REAL CONTROLLER, also people are buying VR headsets on top of new TVs and upgraded consoles, so yeah they need to create a better console than the ps5, yeah I meant PS5, and Xbox Spider, or whatever the next xbox console will be, and just drop the damn overly expensive gimmicky controllers, make it around $500 per console, WITH A REAL GAME INCLUDED, and cut the “censoring mature rated games” crap out, because I would love to see a future GTA game on there for once!
If all these statements about Nintendo being dead were the building bricks, I could build the Great Chinese Wall from it.
This is boring tell us something we haven’t heard and it’s only opinion anyway rather than fact.
Of course they don’t rule anymore everybody knows this but their role definitely isn’t over that’s for sure.
LOL they siad this before the ds and wii to
how is the only company profiting DOOMED
Oh no! Whatever shall we do now!
I dont think so. Nintendo is and it will be the father of the video game industry forever. They just let them be (Sony and Microsoft) for a wile with the Wii u but they will came back with the NX. Just wait and see.
If NX ends up being a bigger failure than Wii U, then these people might be on to something. Til that happens, they are just being a less smarter version of Pachter since at least that guy says things that should be obvious.
Seems about right. Nintendo has their heads up their asses. Who the heck decided that it would be a good idea to limit supply of the NES Classic? Bunch of morons. Watch them try the same crap with the Switch. Artificially limit supply to try to create demand. Bunch of idiots. We demand, YOU SUPPLY. That’s how this all works.
Toy companies are one of the dumbest morons in the marketplace. Releasing limited supplies of the best toys. For what? Now Nintendo thinks they’re a toy company.
