Battery life for the main Nintendo Switch screen can last for about six hours on a single charge, depending on the software and usage conditions. On the other hand, the versatile Joy-Con controllers can last for 20 whole hours each on a single charge. Left and right Joy-Con controllers are included in the Nintendo Switch bundle as part of the $299.99 price, but you’ll have to fork up another $80 for an extra set of two. The Nintendo Switch console is set to launch globally on March 3.
I still can’t believe they want $80 for two more of them…..
MOST ADVANCED CONTROLLER IN HISTORY!!!!!!! ITS NOT A SHITROLE PAPER BUILD QOALITY 20 YEAR OLD CONCEPT DUALSHOCK
Stop yelling.
Yeah I know, Gamestop explained to me why stating that they are smaller thinner wiimotes basically the are 45 a piece the original ones are that is why so they say
I know right?. I could have sworn they mentioned 60$
}{ I think they are attempting to market them as two seperate controllers at $40 a piece… It’s still pricy of course, but given the tech inside I don’t find it particularly surprising, albeit annoying… }{
It’d actually be nice if they sold them separately, so in case one of them breaks, you don’t have to pay 80 bucks for 2 just to replace one of them.
They do sell them individually, but they’re $50 each.
}{ That is what we call “Marketing”, which when combined with having a monopoly over controller production causes expenses… Since nobody has a monopoly over PC, this tactic rarely goes well, which is one of the many reasons I prefer it to console gaming… }{
well you know later there will be knock off joy controllers
That’s what I’m aware of. I think the console will be separated to the joy cons controllers. :/
the wiimotes with motion plus are $40 each. same exact price for each joycon bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lol
Well the Joy Cons feature a lot of tech, some new, some that has been done before but not executed well.
Really, the Joy Cons are advanced versions of the Wii remotes as they don’t need a sensor bar, the IR Sensors is extremely sensitive and the fact that they feature “HD Rumble” which a lot of people are saying it’s nothing to be laughed at and is pretty amazing.
I think they could have lowered the price a bit more but I can see why it’s expensive, but you think about it, it’s cheaper to buy them together than it is to buy them separate.
@Chris Orc (@ChrisTheOrc),
Until you mentioned it, I didn’t realize the Joy-Cons didn’t need a sensor bar. That’s such a relief.
Thats it, the Joi Cons have a lot of technology cramped into very little space.
Something like that can not be much cheaper.
I agree with basically everyone’s comments. I hadn’t really thought about the fact that they’re expensive because of all the technology packed into those little buggers. Definitely wish they were still cheaper, but it also makes sense. Either way, hyped for the Switch and getting it at launch. =D
Shit!! I STILL don’t believe after all these years Microsoft Xbox wants $150 for that elite controller!!!
Can we use the joycons to charge the Nintendo switch?
This way we can extend the switch longer then 2 1/2 hours easily for playtime!
That would be pretty nifty.
That would be nifty but I doubt it.
You know it’s kinda like a Wii battery charger when you charged your Wii remote. I didn’t know you have to charged both joy cons.
Why wouldn’t you have to charge both? They both use electricity.
I know
Of course you can! I’m always charging my Notebook with my phone works really great! :/
The Switch actually charges the Joy-Cons, so if anything they’re leeching power from the system when they’re connected to it.
It doesn’t work that way. The reason the battery life in the Joy-Cons is so long isn’t because they have crazy high capacity batteries, it’s because the Joy-Cons use so little power. The added power the Joy-Cons could provide the Switch wouldn’t be noticeable.
Unless I’m mistaken, the battery life goes into pricing of controllers. If the battery life of Wii U’s pro controller wasn’t 80 freaking hours, I bet it would have been a lot cheaper. With that in mind, this makes the price of the Joy-Cons all the more reasonable.
Its also the advanced gyroscopic senors, 3d rumble, ir sensor, and NFC reader. There’s a surprising amount of technology inside those things. 80$ is still a bit much tho. 60$ would have been more reasonable.
That’s a really good point about all of the technology in them… But totally, $60 would’ve been awesome.
I know, right? It’s like, how the hell does that all fit in there?
Lol. Totally. I forgot it also has that second set of L and R buttons as well.
I agree that the price is still high. Nintendo tends to make smart use of cheap technology so I’m not sure the a lot of these things raise the price that much. Like the presence of the IR camera in the right Joy-Con doesn’t seem to be enough to make the retail price of the Right Joy-Con higher.
They seem to be going all out with their tech this time tho. But yeah still a bit high. 60$ would have been perfect.
I really really hope we can use the Wii U Pro controller with the Switch.
Sorry to crush your hopes but I don’t see that being the case, the Switch’s pro controller comes with motion controls, which the Wii U’s lack.
but what about the games that dont use them, I just want to play smash 3with a regular controller that doesn’t cost 70$
That wouldn’t raise the price of the controller to $70. Figure a pair of Joy-Cons is selling for $80 and they have twice as many gyroscopes, accelerometers, Bluetooth controllers, and batteries than the Pro controller would have and the right Joy-Con has an IR camera in it. All the accessories are being marked up heavily for no reason.
Wait, I think I read your comment wrong. It’s really late here.
FIRST IDIOT TO COMPARE 9AXIS ADVANCED PRESION GYRO TO A MEAR ANALOG STICK GETS A WII REMOTE JAMPED IN HIS BONEHEAD ASS….DUALSHOCK IS A JOKE
Says one of the biggest jokes on MNN. lol
So I guess you have to charge both joy cons. Well, I didn’t see that coming.
Did you just expect them to work wirelessly with no power source?
Uhhh yeah?
lol
What?
you…. really dont get it??
No
‘electronics without power don’t do anything’
Ohhh OK I see.
Why are you everywhere?
y r u???
You first
u
That’s what I said. You as in you. That means you.
Okay, so you are a troll. I really couldn’t tell.
And how I’m I a troll punk ass?
You know how. You expect me to believe you didn’t know electronics run on electricity? I mean I know you’re a Sonic fan but even you should be able to see the root word in electronics.
OK whatever you say.
Glad I have two roomates getting a switch, as well as myself if I don’t change my mind and cancel my preorder, cause if that’s 3 controllers already in my house.
I’m thinking if I decided to cancel it, I won’t and will simply wait til the 48 hours that GameStop holds preorders for you when they arrive in store runs out so some other lucky person, or as another said on here chump, can buy it from the store & just get my money back the day after.
Haha not a bad plan, saves you from having to have that awkward convo with them explaining why you’re canceling and them trying to stop you lol. Even if I do cancel, I’m getting my zelda master editon haha. I am pretty excited for bomberman and I’m gonna have to play mario so I probably won’t cancel though. Also, I have Yooka Laylee already paid off on Wii U from the kickstarter, and I would rather play it on a Nintendo console, so for my choice I’m gonna switch to switch.
I’m getting a Splatoon bundle instead of pre-ordering the switch. So that way it will save me money in no time.
Same. The stuff coming in that Master Edition all look great & when you get a Switch later on when it’s cheaper, you’ll already have your copy of the game. If I manage to get the Master Edition, I’m still gonna get the game digitally at some point on Switch unless Nintendo decides to be TOTAL FUCKING STUPID, IDIOTIC, MORONIC, RETARDED FUCKTARDS!!! *right eye twitch*
That’s actually pretty good. But, I don’t remember anything in the presentation explaining how the Joy-cons are charged; does anyone know?
With the Joy-Con-Grip or the Nintendo Switch itself.
Joy cons.
ON THE SWITCH OR CHARGER USB ON GRIP OR AFTER MARKET CHARGER
Caps-lock. Turn it off.
Can’t wait for a battery pack…
Battery pack?
I figure this is a great place to ask. Is anyone else concerned with how small these things are? I’m. Not sure if I could enjoy the console comfortably. Wii was quite rough on me. I only ever really went through SMG SMG2 and LoZ: SS because I really wanted to play them and still had cramped hands from it.
Doesn’t look really that small to me. But people were bitching how big and bulky the Wii U GamePad was, and that to my hands is a perfect fit.
They are quite small. They’re only 4 inches long and 1.25″ high.
So I have to pay $80+ for a controller I dont want in order to play your games. Bravo nintendo.
just don’t buy the console at all and no worries man
The controls don’t add that much to the actually price of the Switch. The manufacturing cost of the Switch, the dock, and the Joy-Cons is likely between $200-250.
Don’t bother. He’s been bitching about paying extra for shit he doesn’t use even after a lot of us have told him otherwise. Not to mention we’ve mentioned how his smartphone, tablet, & computer has a ton of stuff in it he probably doesn’t use on them, either. Then again, he probably bitches about those features on phone, tablet, & computer fansites, too. lol
I actually agree with him. I’m just informing him that the Joy-Cons don’t cost their retail price to manufacture.
In my case, I understand that the Joy-Cons are part of the main attraction of the Switch so understand why they’re included but I think he represents a pretty large portion of gamers and I think it’s why Switch’s concept is so extremely flawed.
I don’t like how gadgety the Switch is and I’ll explain what I mean by that. It’s one system that comes in 5 different pieces. Generally video game systems are made without much excess because they’re made for one purpose and the things it runs are made to make use of almost every aspect of the system. If you have a PS4, you’re using the CPU, GPU, memory, wi-fi, hard drive, optical drive, and controller. They’re all essential. From the impressions I’ve seen of the Switch, there are a lot of people who just intent to use it as a home console and or just intend to use it as a portable.
For the former, that touch screen, the ambient light sensor, the stand, microSD card slot, and even the seperation of the dock and the actual device are useless excess. For the latter, the dock is just a charging station making the fan and extra USB completely useless and the Joy-Con grip becomes this annoying thing they own that need to find a place to store away.
Unlike the Wii U which does use gamepad in quite a few games and is needed for certain functions of the system, the Switch was designed so that someone can completely ignore whole facits of the system if they want to but Nintendo doesn’t offer them the ability to opt out of paying for those facits. You see, before, if someone just wanted to play games on the go, they could choose to buy the 3DS. If they just wanted to play at home, they could get the Wii U. If they wanted to do both, they could buy both. The Switch makes the assumption that MOST people want to do both. Another way to look at it is to imagine that everybody who wanted to buy the 3DS had to buy the Wii U with it. By sales alone we can see that about 5 or 6 times more people prefered the 3DS to the Wii U and only a sub-group of the Wii U owners also bought the 3DS.
Nintendo is trying to combine two completely different things. Its like trying to merge a desktop and laptop. Both run Windows, MacOS, or Linux but they’re designed for different purposes, different people, and different lifestyles.
And playing Tabletop/TV w/ Joycon in each hand becomes my preferred modes of play.
20 hours battery life given the tech that’s inside each Joy-Con? I’m not going to lie, that’s really good.
Just wish everything to do with the Switch was a little cheaper. Apples and Oranges…
Definitely not a console for careless kids. Like my nephew. He breaks everything he touches. Though surprisingly, his 2DS is still in one piece. But I heard he drops it all the time.
