Nintendo Switch Could Support Old Controllers Via An Update

The Switch seems to be a clean break from previous Nintendo consoles, the upcoming system not backwards compatible with old games or controllers. However, this might not always be the case. In an interview with Time, Kimishima revealed that they were considering making certain old controllers usable with a system update. This is certainly interesting, controllers like the Wii Remote being a Nintendo staple for over 10 years now. Check out the full interview here.

Is Switch powerful enough to emulate Wii U games, or would they have to be ports, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

We can take games and bring them and make them playable on Switch. So they can be remade for Switch, yes.

That said, Switch is not backward compatible with games designed for other systems, and is not currently compatible with controllers designed for other systems. Support for certain controllers may be considered for a future update. In some cases, games from past systems may be re-released for the Nintendo Switch system as either enhanced or original versions.

    1. The wiiu gamepad possibly wont be supported, because of the lack of the hardware that allows wireless video streaming (it was the most expencive thing about the wii u). If switch could do that then the docking base would be obsolete.

      1. Not quite – Wii U gamepad uses the Wi-Fi n, that I’d expect Switch using as well. Of course the dock is useless as it is, if using your standards, because you can use a USB-C to HDMI power adaptor to replace it. The dock serves other purposes than just a charger and an USB to HDMI adapter.

Apparently the gamepad was expensive, but the cost comes from a number of features instead of just one.

        1. Yea, the Switch supports 802.11ac which can switch between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and is backwards compatible with previous standards. The Switch also supports h.264 encoding so it should be able to send a stream to the gamepad.

      2. Yes, that is true… I really just like the idea of local multipler with multiple screens. If there could be a dongle on the Switch or something that would allow secondary streaming that would be great… pipe dream

  1. Now you’re speaking my language!
Cause a brother gots too many Wiimotes lying around the house for the Switch not to be backwards compatible with any of them.

    Nintendo…MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!

  2. I strongly suspect that the “Certain” old controller they are considering supporting is the Balance Board. I have no doubt a “Switch-Fit” game is already in conceptual development, and not making all those Wii Balance boards compatible would frustrate a lot of users. Its still good tech, for what it is.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

Not to mention it can be used for quite a few sports games like surfing, snowboarding, skiiing, etc.

  3. i strongly doubt that wii remotes would be compatible, its a bad idea from a strictly business standpoint. I think that they are talking about the gamecube controller adapter, so a possible super smash port would work with those.

    1. Wii Remote is much better for shooters than the joycons, because of the trigger placement and we don’t know yet how the joycon camera works as a pointer on the screen. Secondly, the joycons don’t have a D-pad, and the handles on the Switch classic controller aren’t good for the D-pad, this was something I hated on the original PSX controller.

  4. And most probably the wiiu gamepad is not possible to support, because of the lack of the hardware that allows wireless video streaming. If switch could do that then the docking base would be obsolete.

  5. Personally i hope every first party game from wii U gets eventually ported over.
Hope to also see unreal engine updates to N64, gamecube, and wii games.

Honestly their are a lot of “old” games that could be ported to switch and after some tweeks and updates (mario kart 8 style) and then feel fresh and new again, i feel like this is finally the system where we could get a “definitive” addition of ocarina of time, mario 64, mario sunsine, majoras mask exe.

Yay! Something we can agree on!

  6. Wiimotes will not be compatible because:
    1) The technology on the Joy-Con is more advanced.
    2) The Joy-Cons have a much more precise motion controls than the Wii/Motion Plus had.
    3) HD Rumble of course it is not supported on the Wiimotes
    4) Different buttons and layout comparing both Joy-Cons to the Wiimote and Nunchuck.

    GIVE ME SKYWARD SWORD HD!!

  7. Wanna know a quick, painless to keep these things flying off shelves in conjunction with breath of the wild?

    • BAyonetta 1 and 2 port
    • Super Mario Sunshine HD
    • Animal Crossing HD
    • Pikmin for Switch
    • (Potential) Ocarina of time remake for switch.
    • Warioware
    • Kirby Air ride for nintendo switch

  8. If this means support for Wii U Pro Controllers and the GameCube controller adapter for Wii U, that would be awesome. It would save me some money

  9. Why the hell would anyone want to play a Switch with Wii Remotes?

Now I can understand if this means us using the older Pro Controllers, even if they don’t have the same technology.

    1. Anyone waiting to play good shooters on Switch and anyone wanting a good D-pad – besides, Wii Remote is the only way to be able to play with the NES Classic controller, and I’d prefer Wii Classic controller for SNES games. If they’re offering NES and SNES games as a selling point for their paid online, Nintendo better supply gamers with good controllers.

Make Eternal Darkness, the Baten Kaitos games, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, & Pandora’s Tower as enhanced versions, please! Oh & Skyward Sword since the original does not translate well into HD. HD Rumble support would be awesome, too!
