Junichi Masuda Still Interested In Revisiting Older Pokémon Games

Game Informer is continuing with its extensive Pokémon coverage and recently had the opportunity to fire some questions at Game Freak co-founder, Junichi Masuda. One of the things that came up was the company’s interest in revisiting older Pokémon titles as well as working on new games in the series. Here’s what Masuda had to say about the subject:

“I don’t think we’re focused exclusively on making all new stuff. I think it’s important – the nostalgia factor is one thing – to give these memories, this content, another chance to shine for new players. And as a player myself I enjoy that kind of thing, as well.”

    1. Or remaster even, now that they’re transitioning to the Switch they can add a lot of things to the geography of the region with more hardware capabilities, and spice up the story a little bit. Of course they probably won’t out of fear of backlash since fans of Kanto aren’t fans of the slightest change.

      1. I never understood that genwunner mentality, i love my old Red and Blue games, but a remake with the new engine, would give that game life, just keep the core story and everyone should be fine.

I want Diamond & pearl to get that treatment with Darkrai being the Pokemon the post game story focuses on.

      3. You know, when those games came out i was in my late teens and was just fatigued with pokemon games so I never got to really get into that one. A remake of that sounds good, specially if it did get post content.

It wasn’t til Black 2 & White 2 that I started to lose interest in the franchise. Of course, that quickly changed when we got X & Y. xD Of course, to be honest, I only lost interest because I didn’t like how Black & White got sequels instead of a 3rd version like past gens. Looking back, the irony of that is the fact I was upset about the sequels because it was breaking away from tradition! xD Something that I’m sick of with many Nintendo franchises’ main entries these days. Thankfully, Pokemon, Mario, & Zelda have been getting rid of plenty of traditions with their more recent main entries.

      6. I’ve been all over the internet and Pokemon community for a very long time now, and I have only seen a handful of individuals complaining about any changes made to Kanto material ingame. Do you know what I have seen MUCH more of? People like you, complaining and screeching about these supposed “GEnWunNeRS.” I’ve seen more people complain about Kanto remakes and Kanto inclusions in any of the games than I have seen people complain about these supposed changes.

      7. That’s because they only come out of the woodwork when announcements are made, most of them play GO anyways and don’t even play the mainline games like the people who celebrate all of the games. Alolan Exeggutor is just one of the many examples that would get them all in a tizz. They used to be highly prevalent on Pokememes when that place was at its peak, but they tend to lurk on places like Youtube and Facebook and mostly stay silent until a change has been made nowadays.

Hurry up with the remake for the Sinnoh games. I want to be able to catch my own Darkrai with a Dusk Ball so I can give him a damn nickname since the one I got in the event can’t be nicknamed because of the stupid fact it technically belonged to someone before me.

The only way I knew how was through giving some guy in Jubilife City a code while the game had an internet connection but they had turned that off by that point so it was too late.

  3. I’d honestly prefer a sequel set in Kanto and possibly Johto, instead of true remakes. I just don’t think there’s enough content anymore in those old games to warrant remakes. They’d have to make a couple in the same engine and release them in bundles, or do some kind of super remake that some fans have been wanting, where they include all the past regions into one game.

Johto had the most content of any main series game in the franchise, and they added a ton of content in fireRed and leafGreen and would probably do so again for another remake.

That said, I agree with you. I would rather see the world grow and learn where characters went than revisit the same story again.

      1. Sure, gen II had the most cities, gyms, etc. (only half of which being completely original), but they were also very simplistic and entirely tile-based. You can’t really compare Goldenrod or Saffron City with Lumiose or Hau’oli. The newer games are so much richer in their environments and mechanics.

  4. It’s good to hear this. I think this strongly relates to the remakes which are always good and will keep coming, for example gen 4.

I hope it might refer to the rumours of Kanto being in Ultra Sun/Moon which would be brilliant!

I’m not so sure about R/B/G/Y remakes officially as we just got them on the eshop, and will soon get gen 2 as well.

    I’d also love a Colosseum/XD dual remake, and/or maybe a 3rd installment?

    1. Pokesnap 2 seems a lot more likely, Genius Sonority shrunk as a company and has been reduced to making games like Pokemon Shuffle. Shame, since I consider Colosseum to be one of my favorites in the series.

  5. Pokemon is still defined by the original 150. A new engine, a new game, revisiting the same gym leaders as Red/Blue with the original pokemon to ride the wave of nostalgia that Pokemon GO brought out would make a ton of sense.

      1. We were told that there was 150. Mew was a surprise, literally the “New Species Pokemon” in the pokedex, and the only pokemon that couldn’t be obtained between the original two cartridges. So when you lived it, it was the first new pokemon to be released and not part of the original, even if it has an entry in the Kanto pokedex. I’d wake up in the morning and the Pokerap would list all 150 pokemon (Mew was never in the Kanto Pokerap). So yeah, there were only 150 pokemon when I watched the first episode air and when I first booted up the cartridge.

      2. Actually no, I say there was no original 150 because Gen 2 literally existed at the same time as the Gen 1 pokemon. Many were still left in the coding, yet unobtainable, but were brought to life in Gen 2. It’s why if you look up the true dex, there are empty entries all over the place.

  6. Such as the Stadium games for Pokemon Stadium 3 (including Gym Leader Castle, with gym leaders, trial captains, kahunas, elite four, and champions from Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola).

Maybe even, Pokemon Snap 2, revisiting old regions, Pokemon following you (without getting a third version or remake of past-gen game), the trainer-pokemon height comparision in the dex, cross-gen evolutions and pre-evolutions, over 100 new pokemon, and an actual Hall of Fame (that isn’t some random old guy just telling you the names of what pokemon you used).

  7. Gen 4 remakes plzzz. I never played gen 4, the one gen i missed. I mean I could go back and play it but I’d rather play a remake because playing the games after it kind of overshadow the older ones. Except Gold and Silver because they had two regions.

Also Gen one re-remakes would be awesome too. I find it an extremely hard game to go back to because I started with Gold and Silver so I had already basically experienced Kanto region
