E3 2018: Nintendo Hosts Super Smash Bros Invitational And Splatoon 2 World Championship Tournaments

An invited group of players will gather to play Super Smash Bros., and qualified teams will compete on Splatoon 2 from 11th – 12th June in Los Angeles to deliver some high-level gameplay as Nintendo hosts an event featuring these two games for Nintendo Switch. The gathering will be a celebration of fun for all ages and will highlight Nintendo’s unique approach to competitive play. The event will be just one of Nintendo’s activities during E3, which runs from 12th – 14th June at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Additional details about Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced at a later time.

The event will showcase players from around the globe in the Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 tournament for the newly announced Super Smash Bros. game coming to Nintendo Switch this year. It will also include the winning teams from their respective tournaments from across the world as they battle to become victorious at the Splatoon 2 World Championship. The competitions will be live-streamed to audiences on Nintendo’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

The Splatoon European Championship which takes place at Polymanga, Switzerland will decide which team from Europe will have the opportunity to compete at the Splatoon 2 World Championship. The tournament kicks off with a pre-qualification round on 30th March and the morning of 31st March, where the 16 attending teams will battle it out for a coveted spot in the final four. Then, on 31st March at 13.00 CEST, the gripping semi-final and final will be broadcast live on Nintendo UK’s YouTube channel and on Twitch, with members of the winning team walking away with a special trophy and jersey, and the title of European Splatoon 2 champions.

Prior to the Splatoon 2 World Championship, Nintendo will host the Splatoon 2 Inkling Open 2018 online qualifiers in the US/Canada hosted by Battlefy. The winning team will qualify for a chance to win a spot at the Splatoon 2 World Championship, and those in Japan (Splatoon Koshien 2018) and Australia/New Zealand (AUNZ Splatoon Cup) should watch for local information.

  1. This is actually pretty big. We haven’t seen any gameplay for Smash yet which is very unlike the invitational for Smash 4; we just might get a Smash Direct before E3 that shows off gameplay

  2. Nintendo ain’t fucking around this year at E3. They are definitely bringing it. All we need now is Bayonetta 3, Pokémon Switch and Metroid Prime 4 gameplay footage and it’s a wrap for the competition

  3. The first confirmed look at Smash Switch, wow! This made my day. I hope my favorite players will be invited to the event: ZeRo, Mew2King, Hungrybox, Mango, and Ken.

    1. Surely you expected them to show Smash at E3 seeing as it’s coming out this year? Can’t be that much of a surprise

      1. Right, but I didn’t think we’d see much else aside from a new trailer. The invitational should give us a good look at the movesets of characters so we can learn how much was changed.

  4. The way they are keeping Splatoon fresh…. This game might have really long legs and become a major eSport in the long run… It might snowball into something really, really grand.
It’s big already tho… But it could get even bigger.
