Square Enix On Dragon Quest XI: “It’s True That The Nintendo Switch Version Is Under Development At This Moment In Time”

Hokuto Okamoto, producer for Dragon Quest XI, recently took part in an interview with GameSpot. There, Okamoto discussed the situation with the Nintendo Switch version of the game. It turns out that Unreal Engine is a major player behind the delay, an Okamoto says that the game’s development is “still a long ways out”. Here is everything that Okamoto said about the matter:

“It’s true that the Nintendo Switch version is under development at this moment in time. Specifically with regards to the development, this game was developed on the Unreal Engine, but the version for Unreal Engine needs to be updated, I suppose, in order to support Switch. In that sense, the development is still expected to take a very long time. It’s still a long ways out.”

“Of course, we did consider releasing PS4 and a Switch version around the same time if that was even a possibility, but right now the outlook for the Switch version is still unclear at this moment in time. The Japan team, they wanted to release Dragon Quest a XI and bring it overseas as soon as possible for our fans overseas, which is why they proceeded with the PS4 [and] Steam version[s] this time.”

  1. What are they even talking about “the version of unreal engine needs to be updated for Switch”? This game is unreal engine 4 which is fully supported by Switch. Also, why was this not started much earlier? They kind of sound incompetent or they are making it up because Sony has paid them to delay it. Sorry, but I’m still salty about this because I’m really looking forward to the game

    1. The game is made in 2015 which is a year where the Switch was only mention with the name of NX. So Unreal developers couldn’t make a Switch support when the console wasn’t even a thing

    2. “They kind of sound incompetent or they are making it up because Sony has paid them to delay it” This is what stupid people ACTUALLY BELIEVE. Square Enix is incompetent it. Couldnt possibly be that you have no idea what the hell youre talking about. yes this company thats been making games for probably longer than youve been alive is either incompetent of being paid off. For fuck sakes

      1. Given the leaks about MH World being true about Capcom selling off MH to Sony, I would not be surprised at all, let alone the fact that SE is not releasing the fucking 3DS version in NA instead opting for the Steam version that will sell like shit for sure, we all know SE and Nintendo relationship is fucking bizarre when we talk about at least DQ and FF, don’t come with your bullshit arguments and half-assed excuses like Project Octa happening, we have the right to be upset at this progressively shitty company attitude towards Nintendo fans specifically.

    3. Not all versions of Unreal Engine 4 support Switch. Switch support was only added to UE4 in version 4.16. If the game was developed with an earlier version of UE4, yeah, they’ll have to do a lot of porting work just to get the game running on UE4. From what I’ve heared about UE4, it’s also one of those engines that can break a lot of stuff if you migrate to a newer version, though I haven’t worked with it enough to confirm or deny it.

  2. Still think it was a shitty thing for Square Enix not to release the Switch version alongside the PS4 version worldwide. I think it’s even shittier that they aren’t going to give us the 3DS version.

  3. I’m waiting for the switch version instead of getting the ps4 version bc I’ve found it’s easier and quicker to beat a game when I have the option of privacy.
(So don’t make me wait too long, SE!)

  4. Shit company will release a 2-year-old JRPG that everybody would have played 3 years ago on another console because they are too stupid to speed up development on the fastest selling device in Japan? who else could be but Square Enix

  5. Square Enix is incompetent when it comes to their websites & their mini-games (many of their mini-games border on sadistic and near impossible at worst) but when it comes to making video games overall, they are far from incompetent. As for this constant “Sony must be paying 3rd parties to screw over Nintendo!” claims, while it could be possible as nothing is impossible, their system is the top console this gen right now and they are probably on the verge of getting ready to move on to their next gen system, so why bother trying to hinder the Switch?

  6. There are enough other games to play. I’ll just wait for a sale, most likely for the PS4 version, unless the Switch version comes sooner than expected (I’m not expecting it aaaaaany time soon, this is Square after all). These excuses sound like they had some horrible planning though. I’m way more excited for Octopath, so… not a big deal to me.
