Mario Kart 8 has now become the 2nd best-selling game in the Mario Kart franchise

It is an understatement to say that Mario Kart 8 has been successful. The game ended up being the best-selling title on the Wii U, and it has now managed to achieve the same thing on the Nintendo Switch. In fact, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold more than double the amount of the Wii U original. Because of this, Mario Kart 8 is now the second best-selling Mario Kart title in the series. Mario Kart Wii is still at the top, with about 11,000,000 separating the two. You can see the full sales numbers for the Mario Kart games, as well as a pie chart, down below.

  1. Mario Kart Wii: 37,200,000
  2. Mario Kart 8: 26,330,000
  3. Mario Kart DS: 23,600,000
  4. Mario Kart 7: 18,380,000
  5. Mario Kart 64: 9,870,000
  6. Super Mario Kart: 8,760,000
  7. Mario Kart Double Dash: 6,960,000
  8. Mario Kart Super Circuit: 5,910,000

  1. The strange thing is that despite how well Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is selling, they aren’t capitalizing on it and releasing more DLC. Deluxe is fun and all, but I haven’t played the game since November because there hasn’t been any DLC packs or anything new to do. You’d think that they’d consider it since they’ve got nothing to lose. I’m especially still curious about the DLC they mentioned like 2 years ago if anyone still remembers it. They posted a pic of Kalimari Desert on Twitter with the message “Good things come to those who wait”, but it’s been like 2 years now and nothing…

    1. Yeah, I’m very surprised they haven’t added DLC to MK8D. It makes me think they might be prepping an MK9 for Switch – but if they are, they want to release it pretty soon (like the next year or so). Mario Kart has such a long tail in sales and so it would be a waste for them to release it in the twilight years of the Switch.
