Minecraft Steve and Alex join Super Smash Bros Ultimate on 13th October (US) 14th October (Europe)

On Oct. 13, worldwide phenomenon Minecraft is sending two of its finest rectangular heroes to join the ever-expanding cast of playable fighters in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game for the Nintendo Switch system. Steve and Alex, who both proudly sport more right angles than a high school geometry class, will be the seventh DLC fighters added to the game. They are part of the second Challenger Pack in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which also includes a new stage and seven music tracks from the Minecraft series.

In a video hosted by Masahiro Sakurai, the Super Smash Bros. creator detailed the boxy new fighters, providing a detailed breakdown of their one-of-a-kind move set, which involves digging into stages to gather materials to craft tools and construct blocks to use in a variety of ways in battle.

“Steve and Alex bring their world of building and crafting from Minecraft to the action-packed stages of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “When new fighters are added through the Fighters Pass, they bring a whole new style of gameplay to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, offering players new strategies and options to keep the experience fresh.”

When selecting this new fighter, players will be able to choose between a Steve or Alex skin, each with three color variations. Additionally, players can also choose to look like the Zombie or Enderman characters from Minecraft when playing. Each of these characters, while they look different, possess the same set of moves:

  • The Basics: Like in Minecraft, players can hold down the attack button to walk while repeatedly swinging a sword, axe or pickaxe. These attacks have short range, but wide reach. These tools can also be used for abilities new to the Super Smash Bros.franchise: Mine, Craft and Create Block.
  • Mine: While battling, Steve and Alex can use their tools to dig into the ground or walls of each stage to extract materials. The materials found – dirt, wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond – will depend on the type of surface Steve and Alex dig into. Dig into the tree-filled Kongo Jungle, for example, and players will find an abundance of wood, while iron can be discovered on the Corneria stage.
  • Craft: After mining, players can then craft using the materials they collected. Steve and Alex’s tools have limited durability and can break, so crafting new tools is vital to maintaining an advantage on the battlefield. By standing in front of a crafting table, which will appear on the stage, players can use materials to craft these tools – the more valuable the material, the more powerful the tool!
  • Create Block: Another move that Steve and Alex can use is Create Block. By activating this ability, players will, well, create a block! These blocks can be stacked and strategically placed as defensive maneuvers. Blocks also use materials, like crafting, so players will have to continue to mine to maintain their material supply.
  • Final Smash: Steve and Alex’s explosive Final Smash is called House of Boom. After destroying the Smash Ball, players will summon a giant piston, which sends opponents flying into the House of Boom. From there, the iconic Creepers from Minecraft will set off an explosion, dealing massive damage.
  • Minecraft World: The stage included in this Fighters Pass Vol. 2 pack is Minecraft World, which consists of six different areas inspired by the Minecraft game. The destructible areas randomly change for each match. When battling on this stage, players will experience a day and night cycle, with zombies and skeletons emerging at night to terrify players.
  • Music Tracks: Since the music in Minecraft is meant to be soothing and relaxing to inspire creativity and building, the new music tracks selected for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are from more action-packed games in the Minecraftfranchise, like Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons.

All of this new content will be available to players who purchase Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2 or who purchase Challenger Pack 7 separately for $5.99. By purchasing Fighters Pass Vol. 2 for $29.99, players will get access to Steve and Alex, along with previously released fighter Min Min from ARMS and four more yet-to-be-announced Challenger Packs as they release. Each pack includes one fighter, one stage and multiple music tracks.

Players can also still purchase Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 1 at a suggested retail price of $24.99 to gain access to the first five Challenger Packs that were released for the game. Playable fighters Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry Bogard and Byleth are all available now. For a suggested retail price of only $5.99 each, players can also purchase these packs individually.

In addition to the minecart full of sparkling details about Steve and Alex, some additional news about the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game was revealed in the video, including the reveal of new in-game Mii Fighter costumes and new amiibo figures. Bomberman, Creeper, Pig, Diamond Armor, Gil and Travis Touchdown will be available as Mii Fighter costumes on Oct. 13, while three new amiibo figures are also in production – Banjo & Kazooie, Byleth and Terry Bogard – and scheduled to launch in 2021.

  1. What’s Da Dizzneal?

Thank you Sakurai. With the reveal of this lates “character,” and now Travis being only a crappy mii costume, you continue to keep my wallet filled with an extra 30 bucks. I will list ten character choices that would have been a billion times better than this blocky, barf inducing disgrace.

    In no order:
    Rayman
    Crash
    Waddle Dee
    Paper Mario
    Travis
    Doom guy
    Qbby (from BOXBOY)
    Another fire emblem character
Leon Kennedy (RE 4 was originally a GameCube exclusive)
    Dante

    1. I’m pretty sure Crash will have a spot in the fighters pass no doubt. He’s iconic and has a history with Nintendo with him being rivals with Mario in the mid 90s. That pretty much guarantees he’ll be added in eventually. They most likely want to save him for a future reveal since he’s a more hype character than Min Min and Steve.

    2. But sakurai was right about this iteration of SSB being the ultimate…and now we know that he meant: The ultimate sellout, because that’s what he is a sellout.

      Now, come after me fanboys.

      1. What’s Da Dizzneal?

Might wanna grab your bib, that rivulet of Emfamil running down your chin is just about ready to drip onto your device, a device which of course, was not purchased by you.

    3. Most of those choices are terrible.

      >Rayman
Rayman would contribute nothing to Smash bros… maybe he’ll be the challenger pack 10 fighter.
      >Crash
I use to not like Crash, but if not one but two Microsoft-not-Microsoft fighters can join the ultimate fight, I don’t see why a Sony-not-Sony fighter can’t.
      >Waddle Dee
One of your good picks, but at this point, who would main him?
      >Paper Mario
How could you want anyone but Toad or Waluigi to be the next Mario rep? Besides, do we really need another Mario? Sure we got three Links, but having Young Link and Toon Link be two separate fighters was a mistake.
      >Travis
Never liked the idea of Travis in Smash. Sure he would have been better than some of the Ultimate DLC fighters, but we don’t need to keep putting in characters that don’t feel like Nintendo.
      >Doom Guy
I hate Bethesda before Microsoft bought them, and I hate them now. No more Microsoft reps. At least not in this iteration.
      >Qbby
      Just no.
      >Another fire emblem character
If that was an ironic pick, let it go. Pokémon has 10 reps, never see anyone complain about them. I would like Anna, Eirika, and Zelgius, but not necessarily all three.
      >Leon Kennedy
Not fond of Resedent Evil, but we have too many Nintendo x Sega collaborations and not enough Nintendo x Capcom collaborations to eat them.
      >Dante
I have hopes for Dante. Not only would he be another Capcom character, but we got Snake and I wanted Jin Kazama (even though it’s unlikely now that Heihatchi is a mii costume). Metal gear, Tekken, and Devil may cry where all represented in PSABR.

    4. I’m honestly curious, why do you feel that Steve and Alex are a “blocky, barf inducing disgrace”?

I don’t play Minecraft anymore, but my younger brother does, and I have good memories of it when I was back in grade school, so I’m having trouble understanding why it would be a “disgrace.”

I, personally, find it incredible how much love and detail went into capturing the essence of Minecraft, which, as Mr. Sakurai pointed out, is the best-selling game in the world. I think it makes sense to have in Smash, a celebration of gaming! Everything from weird, funny things like his stiff animations and his up- and down-taunts that represent different greetings players use in the game to say hello, to the impressively technical with how you mine around the stage, craft tools, and place blocks and build bridges like you might in PvP or in popular Minecraft minigames like Skywars.

I’d like to hear your perspective.

  2. Steve Kirby looks so cute as a block form.

For the next fighter, I’m hoping for another Sonic rep like Metal Sonic as a echo fighter for Sonic and for commemorates the series 30th anniversary next year.

  3. Considering how intricate and complex their moveset is and how every stage needed some reworking to account for their mechanics, I can see why it took so long to make this fighter happen. I don’t think I’ll main them, but I’m quite fascinated and I’m excited to try them for myself.

  4. Regardless of how i feel about minecraft being represented in this game you got to admire attention to detail these new characters get. Wish the old ones got updated. Such as the 3 links in this game. 3 different series and they all share the same moves what the heck right?

  5. Young link = ocarina of time/majora’s mask
    Toon link = spirit glass/phantom hour glass/the minish cap/windwaker
Adult link = breathe of the wild/twilight princess/skyward sword

  6. when we get the next smash, I dont know if I see Steve coming back, sounds like it took a lot of rework of the games mechanics just to make him work. seems like a one time thing

I still say we are getting the Metal Slug crew. No spirits, no cameos (outside like 2/3 music tracks) and especially no Mii Gunner outfit? Plus every 3rd party company so far has gotten at least a 2nd rep (if we count Atlus as Sega) except SNK.
