Nintendo president: “We’re always actively researching technologies that could be the starting point of something fun”

Japanese news site The Nikkei recently had the chance to chat with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa and conducted a fairly short interview. Mr. Furukawa addressed the issue of cloud gaming and streaming which is is being prioritised by companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Mr. Furukawa believes that new technological advances in the world of computing and gaming can certainly make a huge difference to the overall gaming experience and he concluded that the company is continuously looking at emerging technologies for future Nintendo systems and products. Here’s what he told The Nikkei:

“With the rise in popularity of smartphones, our strategy is to grow the population of people who play video games. People all over the world enjoying games by utilizing the various features of smartphones, personal computers, and dedicated gaming consoles.

I’m sure new offerings like cloud gaming and streaming will emerge, but they won’t be a top priority when choosing what game to play*. I think the most important things there are the contents of a game as well as the kind of games you can play.

On the other hand, technological advances can make a big difference to the gaming experience itself. Since this can happen at any time, we’re always actively researching technologies that could be the starting point of something fun.”

*Domestically, some players have a preference of hardware before software when choosing where and what games to play.

  1. I really don’t have the answer for his statement and all, but I do believe that Nintendo will make a great impact in the industry for there future systems and discovered more technology to satisfied their consumers.

I mean we won’t be seeing a new pro announcement anytime soon, but I’m still counting for a pro announcement for this year by then.

  2. How about consoles that boast power over gimmick, so 3rd-party developers don’t have downgrade/remove content from their games, or refuse to port them over at all.

Still waiting for Lunatea’s Veil, J-Stars Victory VS, NiGHTS into Dreams, and several Sonic games.

  3. “New technologies to start something fun.” I Love Nintendo, Switch is a great console. But I’m still missing really good games on it, I mean of course it has fun and innovatieve games like ARMS, Splatoon etc. But why do we have to wait so long for MK9, Metroid Prime (I know it got delayed), why is Botw 2 taking so long? Why don’t we get a new (yes new, not another HD remake) Diddy Kong racing, Banjo-Kazooie or Perfect Dark clone… maybe Wave Race, 1080° snowboarding or something? Right now I’m a little disappointed by all the HD remakes and ports and I’m afraid games like Animal Crossing aren’t doing it for me. I still spend more time on my old Nintendo consoles than I do with me new Switch and it should be the other way around.

    1. Splatoon, Xenoblade, Astral Chain, Fire Emblem and the others are holding it down for now. The Switch still has about 2-3 years to be in the market… Something good can emerge suddenly… Like that Pokémon Legends Arceus game
