Splatoon & Mario Kart 8 Wii U taken offline due to security concerns

By now, you’re more than likely aware of a massive security Nintendo has had to address with their games. Back in December, it was discovered that old games receiving updates had been due to Nintendo fixing a security vulnerability called the “ENLBufferPwn” exploit. The exploit would make it possible for hackers to takeover the console without detection, and the only thing the hacker needed to do so was for the victim to be playing one of the vulnerable games online.

Fixing the issue hasn’t been easy though. Nintendo has discovered the exploit’s existence on certain Switch, Wii U and 3DS games. Nintendo has sorted out the problem on the 3DS and Switch, hence the various updates that had been seen last year. Meanwhile, although Nintendo is making progress, Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 are still vulnerable to the exploit. That said, it seems that is about to change. Yesterday, Nintendo took Splatoon 1 and Mario Kart 8 offline. It is not known when both games will be available to play online.

  1. Yep, doesn’t look like the problem is quite sorted out yet. And with the imminent (and honestly premature) closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShops by month’s end, will the issues be dealt with before that’s no longer possible?
