Lord of the Rings: Gollum developer will no longer make games, plus Gollum 2 canceled

The Lord of the Rings:Gollum video game

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launched without any excitement as the reviews for the game were absolutely dreadful and to cap it off it was a full price release, presumably because it used The Lord of the Ring license. Today, the company behind the game, Daedalic Entertainment, has announced that they are stepping away from making video games and will instead be a video game publisher for sales, and marketing. Daedalic Entertainment also laid of 25 employees and has cancelled The Lord of the Rings game they were making, which was apparently a sequel to The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Daedalic says it is still committed to improving Gollum via patches and updates.

  1. They were developing a sequel to Gollum? They seriously thought that game was so good people would be begging for a sequel?

  2. Anonymous Skywalker

    As much as the game flopped they shouldn’t just give up making games. I think they should continue but at least develop once in a while. Nintendo has made some stinkers yet still makes games.

    1. They probably don’t have any ideas and were banking on the Lord of the Rings brand to pull in money. Luckily enough people saw through that, especially after reviews dropped and gameplay was shown.

      A game from a company with no vision will be a terrible game, and with Gollum already a flop, nobody would have faith in a new game from them. This was ultimately the best business decision. It sucks that they laid off some employees as well though.

    2. Nintendo’s got literally over a hundred years of experience & name/brand recognition to help them ride out a few flops.
      I doubt the Gollum devs had anything near to what Nintendo does, even with a LotR title backing them up.

      1. There is no turning it around when making a game about Gollum, that character literally did absolutely nothing of significance other than fall into a volcano while holding the ring of power.
        His canon story from start to finish was a long and boring miserable life, that’s it.
        The first mistake these devs made was choose to create a game about Gollum in the first, especially given there were plenty of more interesting events like the war between the elves and Sauron’s master and the ancient dragons.
        Nolonger making games is the right choice when your choices are terrible.

    3. You are comparing the world’s greatest video game makers to Daedalic. The best comparison would have been team sonic, now they know what making stinkers is all about.

      F=ma.

  3. I would like to find words of encouragement for the team, but I don’t have any. Sometimes you just have to move on and not look back.

  4. So… They fire the people that develop the games, say that they will focus on publishing…. And continue te patch and fix the game? With who, the publishers? That game was DOA.

  5. I’m not surprised to be fairly honest, the game felt like a bad Styx clone which is a shame because if they would have copied that game to the last letter, they might of had a really good game
