The latest boxed-video game software sales charts have come through for the largest gaming market in Europe, the United Kingdom. This week sees the return of Hogwarts Legacy at No. 1, and coincidentally, it is also the best-selling release of 2023, beating both EA Sports FC and Call of Duty for the title. GfK reports that during 2023, 12.76 million boxed video games were sold in the UK. Here’s the GfK Boxed Top Ten for this week ending 30th December, 2023:
| Last Week | This Week | Title |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | Hogwarts Legacy |
| 2 | 2 | Super Mario Bros Wonder |
| 4 | 3 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 |
| 6 | 4 | Mario Kart 8: Deluxe |
| 5 | 5 | Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 |
| 1 | 6 | EA Sports FC 24 |
| 10 | 7 | Grand Theft Auto 5 |
| 19 | 8 | Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate |
| 8 | 9 | Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora |
| 7 | 10 | Nintendo Switch Sports |

A game from a garbage excuse of an IP (and I’m not just saying that because JK Rowling is against trans, I always hated Harry Potter) was the best selling game of last year? Was 2023 really that bad?
It’s probably because Harry Potter is especially huge in the UK (for obvious reasons).
-HP is huge in the UK. It’s not surprising at all. It’s like US being crazy for CoD.
-The game is genuinely good, a bit rough on the edges but very good for a first attempt. I, for one, know that there’s no need to bash a piece of work because of whatever the creator says or does. Pity most people don’t think like that and ended up snubbing it completely. Also the game has a very decent Switch port.
-In hindsight… yes, 2023 was bad. TGA was proof of that: tons of sequels/remakes, winners that didn’t make any sense whatsoever.
I’m British and I hate Harry Potter. It’s all based on boarding schools and an aspirational, wannabe upper-class, cultural narrative.
I like Harry Potter, still im surprised Hogwarts Legacy was the best selling game of 2023.
The “last week” and “this week” numbers are backwards for Hogwarts Legacy. Must be an error in the original report as it’s like that on every website.
