Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said in a conference call after the earnings report that the current Nintendo Switch will be the company’s main business for 2024. This comes after speculation that a successor to the popular device will be launching later this year. He then went on to say that they will discuss any future plans at its next earnings briefing. Here’s what was said visa Bloomberg.
The existing Switch will be Nintendo’s “main business” heading into 2024, President Shuntaro Furukawa said on a conference call after the earnings report. The company’s plan for the next fiscal year will be shared at its next earnings briefing, he added.
“Nintendo remained tight-lipped about any Switch successor plan, with Furukawa declining to comment beyond saying that the company is always researching new hardware and software. Nintendo would benefit from a hardware upgrade in contending with Sony’s expanding PS5 user base and Microsoft’s cloud-gaming push. The absence of marquee titles on its software release schedule this year is seen as another sign that the company is potentially holding releases back until it has the new platform in place.”

In other words they ain’t gonna drop anything related to this non-existent Switch 2 people swear on their uncle who works at Nintendo.
Well this is a pretty standard response from Nintendo, they often do not like to say anything on any games they are making, and hardware. It has been noted before in previous console or mid console gen release they are not planning anything, or looking at anything or any other way of saying it. To than proceed to announced something new a month or two later.
Of course we don’t know when the next hardware from Nintendo is going to come, but with how its worded, the switch can be their focus for 2024 and have a new hardware launch at the end of the year or do a march release next year.
Who knows but based of the past hardware with leaks etc we should be looking into to some sort of announcement soon
No. in other words … actually it doesn’t need other words as its pretty clear. The current Switch is gonna drive the business.
If a new Switch would arrive by fall, it would still not make enough profit and gain enough of a userbase to replace the old Switch by the end of the year. Even the next year would eventually not be enough to make it the main business as families (the main audience) would eventually keep buying cheaper Switch 1 consoles. and especially its software. As long as Switch 2 hasn’t a big feature that could fasten that process, it would take a while to gain enough traction to send Switch 1 into retirement. Look at how long the PS4 stayed around when the PS5 was already out.
There hasn’t been this much desperate, aimless murmuring about an unannounced console since… The Switch.
Switch 2 doesnt exist….
As early as 2013, the late Saturo Iwata stated that the plan was for their next-gen to be a family of devices that shared a common OS. In 2015 Nintendo officially code-named their next-gen console “NX.” In July of 2016 Eurogamer leaked the design of the NX. October 2016, Nintendo unveiled the “Nintendo Switch.”
As of February 2024, Nintendo has given us NOTHING…………
No news. No information. Not even a codename. We had more than a preponderance of data out in front of the October 2016 reveal for the Switch. There was nothing “desperate” or “aimless” going on. Hard miss on your take.
They’re obviously working on a successor, but that’s all that is known. Meanwhile there are people believing multiple stories a day from youtube channels, that consider every random tweet that anyone can make up concerning the “Switch 2”, video worthy… so they can make 🤑🤑🤑 off the vids. Nice grift if you can get it. 😅
This is a pretty standard response to be honest. Otherwise they’d acknowledge something that exists, and an investor’s call isn’t the place for that. Even if a Switch 2 is releasing this year I’d reckon the main portion of their business would be on Switch 1. How many PS4 games sold compared to PS5 games the year PS5 launches?
So basically this is a pretty “say nothing” business statement. I work in high end government contracts and this is typical business lingo. 🤷♀️
Nice! I can stick with the switch and more games on it for another year! Third parties clearly can’t handle it anymore and I can’t blame them, the console is old as hell. But Nintendo always make good looking games with a stylish look even after all these years on that tiny chip. Also a wind waker he port would be pretty neat
I haven’t picked up my Switch since my wife got me my Lenovo Legion Go. It’s insane as I can play anything with great graphics! I wish Nintendo would release something like the Legion Go.
Lol, the legion go is a rip off of the switch but with updated graphics. They DID release something like the legion go, 7 years ago
“Heading into” 2024 hmm
Sounds like it’s only for some part of the year, later something else will be main focus ;)
Seems like they are going to continue it for this year. Just as I thought.
This isn’t surprising. My money is on a November release date for a new system. Which means the bulk of their money will be made from switch this year.
“Heading into 2024” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Sounds a lot like it might not be their main focus heading into 2025 though.
I honestly think Nintendo is trying to get that record. They know that the Switch is still selling extremely-well and even though it has slowed down, it is still selling at a good enough clip that within the next fiscal-year it has a chance to surpass the PS2 as the best-selling console ever. If they announce ANYTHING concrete for the Switch 2, they will mostly Osbourne the Switch (Osbourne-effect is a term used to describe killing the sales of your current-product by unveiling of the successor too soon or until it has naturally played out,) and take away an chance of beating that record.
People that don’t have a Switch aren’t gonna want to buy the old one if they know for sure a more powerful one is coming. I think that is why Nintendo has been so quiet regarding their next-gen console. I could be wrong, but it makes sense.
Actually, the quote was that the Switch would be the main business “heading into 2024.” They also said that future plans would be revealed at their next financial meeting (in May).
