GameStop‘s troubles don’t seem to be anywhere near ending as the company reported on Tuesday that it had cut an unspecified number of jobs to help reduce its overall costs. The long-running firm also reported lower fourth-quarter revenue. Reuters says that GameStop is continuing to face huge competition from other online retailers and weak consumer spending in an uncertain economy isn’t helping matters.
“An increasing mix of digital downloads is hurting physical retail, and there is simply no reason to go to the store if a consumer can just order a game and download it immediately,”
“I suspect that they will keep trimming costs to generate breakeven or better, but it is inevitable that their sales will decline to an unsustainable level,”
Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter

At this point I don’t even care. Sure I have nostalgia for GameStop because that’s where I bought all or most of my games as a kid, but the miniscule amount they give you for game trade ins is bad enough. Then they decided that their service is worth MORE after all this? It was hard enough getting me to spend $15 for their renewal fee every year, so if they think I’m paying $25, they’re out of their minds.
You could always use your points for a free sub renewal. I paid $10 in 2010 and never had to re pay for my pro subscription until this year with the price increase, but my points still made it only $10 to do so.
Yes, but here’s the thing. I don’t see 12 different times I want to go in to GameStop this year to buy more games. At that point I’m just going in to spend money so I don’t lose my $5 reward/month. It’s more cost efficient for me to just cash out my points and use them on something I actually want
We know from the Insomniac data leaks that digital vs physical sales are not as drastically different from each others. It’s not that people are just downloading the game, its that people are ordering the physical copies too from online stores. It also doesn’t help that this is a dead year for new hardware.
Yeah. Besides, most of the time Gamestop will have the highest prices compared to Amazon or other online retailers.
Yeah because people would rather open their own brand new games instead of Gstop opening them for you and putting a big sticker on it.
I used to buy used games everyday almost a long time ago but my gamestop hasnt had used games in years. Just those pre opened ones for almost full price. No more 5.99, Everything is 19.99 and up. They have great T-shirts but I’m never paying 40 dollars for one like they want me to.
I went to pick up a copy of prince of persia and they said Ubisoft only sent them a few copies, so I had to go to Target. I like a good pre-order bonus, I’ll still go.
