Knuckles producer talks plans to expand Sonic cinematic universe

Knuckles in the upcoming TV show

Paste magazine has published an informative interview with Knuckles TV series executive producer, Toby Ascher, who talks a little about expanding the Sonic cinematic universe. Talking about the inclusion of other characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise appearing in the upcoming Sonic 3 he said that it has led to “Avengers-level events.” When it comes to the Knuckles TV show, Ascher concluded by saying that “everything is wide open.”

“We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies. We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events.”

“First and foremost, the goal going into the series was: how do we replicate the movie quality in a much more condensed timeline? We knew that if, all of a sudden, this looked like a rip-off series or something that was really shoddily put together, not only will fans reject it, but it’ll damage what we’ve made.”

“If something is working really successfully, and we have a really great story to tell, we’re definitely going to expand on it. I don’t think there’s any closed doors on future television, future seasons of Knuckles, so everything is wide open. I think it’s important to us that we’re not just making stuff to make stuff.”

  1. that crappy cinematic universe trend has to end, gets annoying to follow dozens of movies and tv shows to get an idea of the overarching plot.

    1. Why would more sonic content, if done well, bother you? If your a fan you should be happy to see this. I don’t understand the issue. If you don’t care about the potential side stories then just skip them. It’s entertainment for a reason, if your not entertained don’t watch.

      1. I am criticizing the current trend that studios, comicbook publishers among others are desperately milking. if the content is good then the fans win but my comment wasn’t directed only towards sonic and now that we think about it if creating an unified thing is their goal then live action isn’t the way to go, after all the human actors age and let’s be honest Jim Carrey is the GOAT and sadly he isn’t getting any younger, also I think his eggman is just a Gene Hackman’s lex luthor on steroids (not a bad thing as i love superman ’78).

  2. They have a whole list of options from the 17 years of the Archie comics as well. We should not limit potential based on what fans think is or isn’t canon.
