Head of Sonic Team explains where Sonic Superstars fits within the Sonic timeline

Sonic Superstars is finally available, and by all accounts, it is a reasonably decent addition to the 2D Sonic franchise. Eurogamer has published a lengthy interview with the head of the Sonic team, Takashi Iizuka, which covers a range of topics. One thing to note from the interview is where the newly released Sonic Superstars fits within the Sonic the Hedgehog video game timeline. Mr. Iizuka explained that Sonic Superstars is set after the events of Sonic Mania, but before the classic SEGA Dreamcast game, Sonic Adventure.

You’ve previously discussed a Sonic timeline for the games and Sega has a Sonic lore team. Where does Sonic Superstars sit on the timeline? How does it connect to other games in the series?

Iizuka: The Classic series began with Sonic 1 in 1991, and Sonic Adventure marked the switch to the Modern series in 1998. So in terms of the Sonic timeline, Sonic Superstars occurs after Sonic Mania and before Sonic Adventure. Whenever we develop a new game, we always make sure the story fits with the lore.

  1. That’s fine, considering we don’t see Metal Sonic, and there are several games that can take place before Sonic Adventure.
