Nintendo continues plans to combat Switch 2 scalping

With the Nintendo Switch 2 rumoured to launch early next year, Nintendo is continuing to look into ways to make sure that potential purchasers don’t have to turn to scalpers to get their hands on the eagerly awaited system. Speaking to shareholders, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, explained that the Kyoto-based company is continuing its plans to combat scalping by producing more than sufficient numbers of consoles to meet all-important consumer demand. He also went on to say that they are also considering other measures “to the extent permitted by law.”

“As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce sufficient numbers to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year.”

“In addition, we are also considering whether we can take some other measures, to the extent permitted by law, taking into account the circumstances in each region.”

  1. Absolutely phenomenal. The last thing we (and Nintendo) want is a repeat of the Series X and PS5 fiasco!

I’m sure they understand demand will be through the roof, especially with whatever heavy hitter they’re going to pair with it as a launch title

    Or imagine they have several? 1st & 3rd party. That’d be insane…

Something like a 3D Mario, a new ip and/or a quality spin-off/smaller release on release day.

  2. Hmm, I don’t know where you read that the successor will be launched early next year… unless I missed the info, Nintendo hasn’t communicated anything about it

    1. Shuntaro Furukawa said the successor to the switch will be announced before the end of fiscal year 2024-2025. Which is March 2025. If everything goes well, We could have a release date for the holiday season next year.

      1. The new system will be released in March most likely to align with their fiscal year just like the switch did. It will also release then because Nintendo does not want to compete with other big sales.
I say it will be announced in the next Direct in Sept. Oct. and then released Mar 2025

    2. Their financial report confirmed it would be announced before April of next year and if they are already talking about increased production schedules then it wont be much further into the year.

  3. I mean its been rumor why the switch 2 launch was supposed to be this year and move towards next year because Nintendo wants to combat scalping by having a big supply ready.

    1. Yes they have want to make sure that all the requirements and resources for the system is completely ready before it can begin be put into the table when they release it and they want to combat leaks before anyone leak any info about the upcoming system before the big reveal.

  4. Only way to stop scalpers is for people to show some self-respect and not pay marked-up prices for them. I wouldn’t even pay MSRP to a scalper.

    1. The best way of preventing scalpers is to manufacture enough so that demand meets or outstrips supply. There are other things that could help too (without fully preventing it), such as resale platforms only allowing units to be sold at the MSRP as a maximum, quantity limits and anti-bot measures on console sales, waiting lists for consoles that give people a good idea of when they will receive their’s if it can’t be launch day.

The one way you’ll never stop scalpers is by hoping human nature will change overnight. It won’t – marketing will convince people (and especially kids) that they need this console and people will pay the price they can get it for. The companies in question need to find other ways to deter scalping, and fair play to Nintendo that it sounds like they’re at least trying.

      1. Best way to stop scalpers is supply and prevent online ordering. Preorders should be a confirmation number for pickup on day one and then canceled after day one.

If people want to scalp they should be forced to run all over town for them.

  5. The best way to stop scalping is simple, really: don’t allow the resale of things til a year after purchase. Just like a serial code is used by cops to track stolen property, eBay & the like would require the serial number to track when the product was originally sold. Scalpers want to make money fast & a year to wait to sell something is too long because new stock would be out by then.

  6. It’s great to see Nintendo taking action to prevent scalping and ensure that more gamers can access the Switch 2 at fair prices. Producing enough units to meet demand is definitely a step in the right direction. As always, it’s important for consumers to stay informed about their rights when making purchases.
