Digital Foundry speculates on processor possibly behind Nintendo Switch 2

Tech enthusiasts at Digital foundry have been examining the potential processor which could power the next Switch system. It’s Nvidia’s new T239 processor which would be an expensive prospect if it turns out to be the processor driving the platform. It’s not clear whether Nintendo will choose cutting-edge tech at a higher retail price point or a lower cost processor. The Microsoft Activision-Blizzard court case and leaks reveals that it is expected to be around PlayStation 4 and Xbox One visually with some neat tricks such as image upscaling and a form of ray-tracing. Nintendo has yet to announce anything about its successor other than it will use Nintendo Accounts. Check out the speculative Digital Foundry video down below.

“For several years now, Nvidia has been working on a new gaming processor codenamed T239. Derived from a Tegra chip designed for the automotive and robotics industry, T239 combines an eight-core ARM CPU cluster with an Nvidia Ampere-class GPU with 1536 CUDA cores, advanced machine learning and RT capabilities – plus a file decompression engine for fast loading. Rich assesses the leaks and disclosures on T239, ties it to the next Switch project and fires up an ultra-low spec Ampere GPU to get some idea of what this processor can achieve.”

  1. There is no such thing as the Switch 2… It’s going to be something different, so it can all be wrong again… Instead of speculating, just wait for an official announcement

    1. Everyone is probably aware that it won’t be called switch 2, but for conversation purposes I think it’s necessary to speak about the switch successor as switch 2 as it will more than likely be another hybrid and the name fits well until Nintendo reveals its true name, just as we all spoke about the next switch Zelda as botw 2 or botw sequel until Nintendo revealed the true name of totk 🤔

    2. People are calling it the Switch 2 because we’re talking about the Switch’s successor. What else are we going to call it? Better than some made-up name.

Besides, the whole point of this article is how Digital Foundry makes educated speculations based on the email leaks from the Microsoft court case + other leaks/rumours, then showcasing how the games would run if the specs are accurate.

We don’t know for certain what the console is going to be like, but Digital Foundry is closer to accuracy than someone speculating based on nothing.

      1. Digital Foundry is no more reliable than we are since they only rely on rumors…. But what many forget is that Nintendo will not be satisfied with a simple technical evolution of its machine, there will inevitably be something more than a simple copy paste will not be enough either, remember the wii u which was too close to a wii… We’ll have something that will take various elements of the switch but be far away from it
Proof of this can be seen in the words of Nintendo’s president who announced that he did not yet know how to bring players to the next console

Of course, I could be wrong, but those who see a simple evolution of the switch are mistaken.

    1. Would be a neat callback to NES if they called it the NES though it would be Xbox OG/One all over again.
