Suda51 thinks “everyone cares too much about Metacritic scores”

Suda51 is known for being the founder and CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture, a studio known for being the ones behind the No More Heroes games. When Suda51 isn’t working in video games, it’s rather common to see him being interviewed by various video gaming media outlets, and the topics of discussion can vary.

For example, in a new interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Suda51 commented about Metacritic scores. He aid that “everybody pays too much attention to and cares too much about Metacritic scores. It’s gotten to the point where there’s almost a set formula – if you want to get a high Metacritic score, this is how you make the game”. He explained that he feels that games that don’t fit that formula and/or “marketability scope” lose points on Metacritic, and it’s something that bigger companies might not want to deal with. He also notes it might not be the main reason why he feels everyone cares too much about Metacritic scores, but it’s “certainly one reason why”.

He wasn’t done talking about it just yet. In fact, he concluded by saying that “personally, I don’t care too much about the Metacritic numbers. I’m not really conscious of them. What’s important to us is putting the games out that we want to put out and having people playing the games we want them to be able to play”. He does admit that he occasionally check Metacritic scores, especially when Grasshopper Manufacture has released a new game. However, he says that “apart from that I try to avoid Metacritic”.

    1. Gameplay is a first and foremost for me, if I can’t get into the groove of a gameplay it’s a huge no no, people mindsets tend to change too quickly on games when it’s first launches till the next 2-6 months, or even 3-5 years or more, video game reviews imo are a pretty flimsy way to buy a game imo.

(Not to dunk on my Nintendo though I like their reviews!!! ;D)

    2. Yea it’s called real user reviews. Most people talk about it in Reddit. Metacritic is bought by many companies and is not at all a good place to get reviews or opinions. Even the user reviews can be tampered with or removed to make it look better etc.

  1. I don’t even read the reviews on this website. Professional reviews are worthless. If you are undecided about a game, you can look up some gameplay or you can read a lot of player reviews and get an idea of the quality of the game.

  2. For once, Suda51 is right. People would rather listen to others opinions than form their own. Pokemon Gold/Silver get a score of 100, I however hate it.

    1. It’s ironic that you say that, because it’s trendy to say that you hate it now with the Pokemon distribution and level scaling being the only two points that people regurgitate on “why” they hate it.

      1. The people who dislike Gold tend to not really understand why it was so beloved in its day. It was about the presentational improvements compared to Gen 1, the various additions of types and moves, the inclusion of a surprise extra region in the postgame, the time of day mechanics etc. etc. Sure, the game isn’t well balanced, but that never really mattered back then. I remember, I used to play every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for the bug contest, just because the idea of a timed event like that was really novel to me. And I loved the Pokégear features too like the radio, I used to put Pokémon March on all the time while walking around. These features seem like nothing interesting now but at the time were really cool.

As for poor distribution of the new Pokémon, most people I knew didn’t really like the idea of there even being new Pokémon anyway, Pokémon was taken at that time to just mean the original 151. The game sort of warms you up on the idea that there are new Pokémon, hence the first 2 gym leaders have Kanto Pokémon exclusively and then we gradually see more Johto Pokémon. In retrospect it’s a shame that really cool new Pokémon like Skarmory and Tyranitar didn’t get a chance to shine in GSC but at the time it was something that hardly anybody cared about.

People are viewing Gold/Silver through the lens of modern expectations of what a Pokémon sequel is, without understanding that Gold/Silver was literally the first Pokémon sequel, and the series and the people who were playing it was very different back then.

Also, Pokémon Gold doesn’t have a Metascore of 100, I’m not sure where that’s come from. It doesn’t have a Metascore at all. It is a truly outstanding game for its time though.

        1. People dislike Gold and Silver despite all the modern day Pokemon slop games??? Wow.

I’ll add some more context: Pokemon was an instant mega-hit. To get a sequel that had new Pokemon, new types, new mechanics like day/night and holding items, an unown language you could decipher if you felt so inclined, breeding Pokemon and Eggs, etc… AND it kept everything from Red and Blue. You could visit Kanto and battle all the gyms and trade in all the Gen 1 Pokemon. It was still relatively doable to complete a Pokedex in Gen 2. I don’t know if any gen evolved more than it’s predecessor than Gen 2.

Then Gen 3 happened and it was no longer feasible to collect ’em all…

…and now the games are buggy, slow, cliche anime narratives, and generally uninspired…

But, to come full circle, I guess that’s just my opinion. Tastes differ and I guess some people don’t like Gold and Silver. Just shows you gotta play games yourself instead of let the majority opinion decide for you every time.

            1. “ The admin of Serebii says that gen 2 is the worst gen while gen 8 is his favorite.” holy shit pokèmon fans gotta be the most consoomer brainwashed mfs on the planet how is that even possible lmfao

              1. “holy shit pokèmon fans gotta be the most consoomer brainwashed mfs on the planet how is that even possible lmfao”
Exactly. It got to the point where I wasn’t even allowed to voice a minor criticism without certain individuals going batshit crazy on me, and it got even worse than politics. There’s other reasons why I ended up leaving a friend group that I was a part of for years, but I would be lying if I said that wasn’t a factor.

  3. I only knew one person who actually paid attention to metacritic, and they were the type to just follow trends and didn’t seem to have their own personal taste in things. It was honestly pretty pathetic.

  4. I rather form an honest opinion, then just agree with the majority even if it’s not the popular opinion or makes me a social outcast.

  5. Good for him. I don’t care either, it’s very weird that some 10/10 games get a 7 while the top scored ones are boring.

  6. Knowing that there is a significant part of unfounded criticism such as for example, the negative ratings of astral chain in its time made by PS4 players who understood that it would not be released by sony, well yes suda51 is right: people rely too much on this kind of opinion… It’s exactly the same as the other reviews on the internet by the way…
Personally, I never trust it, I make up my own mind
