Analyst says Nintendo “felt threatened” by Palworld success

Palworld fire

By now, you’re more than likely aware of the news that Nintendo and The Pokemon Company has filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developers behind Palworld. Since the news broke, Pocketpair has responded. Meanwhile, the online gaming community has been gradually digesting the news.

One of them is analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, who spoke to GamesRadar earlier about the matter. Toto feels that “This lawsuit would have never happened if Palworld had 500 users per day on Steam. [Nintendo] would have said, ‘ok, whatever, let’s leave these guys alone; the game will die'”. However, the game not only survived, but it has turned into a massive success. It has sold many millions of copies, it’s going multi-platform, and there’s even plans for merchandising and an anime.

According to Toto, it’s that that likely led Nintendo to take action. “You cannot do this with Nintendo. I understand that Nintendo was foaming at the mouth, saying, ‘Look, these guys are going multi-platform, and they’re making anime and merchandising their Pals.’ And Nintendo felt threatened or disrespected or just angry, and they dropped this bomb on them”.

    1. I feel like a mature voice of reason needs to step in and reminds everyone the root cause of the problem… independent devs wanted to sell and appeal to a mass market audience… what better way than to make a pokemon game with guns? Its a Hilarious and attractive game premise, catered to older pokemon fans and those who feel the pokemon company has lost their flair.

  1. Oh my fucking god dude, if this is true then what a giant mass of pussies. Scarlet and Violet were ATROCIOUS, they made absolutely mediocre pokèmon games if not TERRIBLE for the last like what 6 years? and they feel threatened when someone finally steps up and makes something that can compete with their franchise, they somehow felt shocked that their competition is doing good. Instead of filing stupid fucking lawsuits that lead to nothing why don’t you make a great pokèmon game, game freak? they cut the dex, the games look atrocious, they run horribly and they are filled to the brim with bugs. they deserved it, they literally put themselves in this situation.

    1. Probably be a waste of millions over game development if the game gets taken off online by both companies. Besides, the Pokemon company failed to deliver our expectations for Scarlet and Violet.

  2. Well there you have it, I highly doubt that Nintendo or the pokemon company can do anything against this game. They do feel pushed into a corner, but their retaliation will gain them nothing.

I guess they will have to accept that they are probably not top dog anymore.

  3. As much as I hate rooting for the rip-off, if Nintendo didn’t want to be threatened, they would have given us wanted by having new megas be a permanent gimmicks, and they wouldn’t dare put in cringe regional variants, cut the roster of pokemon, or let male player trainers wear lipstick.

    1. That’s just it. If Nintendo didn’t want something like this to happen, they should’ve stepped in and prevented Scarlet/Violet from ever hitting store shelves. But they didn’t.

As for TPC/Game Freak, they should’ve listened to the fans more and not remained complacent for so long. “Rip-offs” (which, stop with that shit, this isn’t a “rip-off” of anything, the games aren’t even that similar) like this wouldn’t never exist if Pokémon had actually evolved with what the fans ACTUALLY wanted.

      1. That doesn’t make sense and you sound like a fucking idiot. They can do whatever they want you doing have to like it. Moron

  4. How about gamefreak and tpc develops an actual good pokemon game for once? all the console pokemon games have been bad in all aspects, even legends, which is the most decent thing they have done, is still a clearly unpolished game in so many fronts, it should be illegal that they released it at full price. S/V is literally the biggest spit in the face from them, the single most mediocre, most unpolished, badly optimized and badly designed pokemon game to date.

I honestly don’t care about palworld, but I’m rooting for them, I legit hope tpc and nintendo lose this one big time.

    1. It doesn’t matter, Nintendo is always wrong for you guys. If it was the opposite you would defend Pocketpair because they are smaller. You guys despise Nintendo so much that you defend plagiarism.

      1. It doesn’t matter, Nintendo is always right for you Endisend. If it was the opposite You would defend Nintendo because they made the Bing Bing wahoo game. You Shill Nintendo so much that you defend shitty bland and lazy games made like shit

        1. Yes, “shill”, another buzzword to discredit what I say. I am saying that you guys exaggerate to the point where you talk like Palworld is a good game and the Switch Pokémon games are not good despite their flaws. Yes, they have bugs and other problems but they are very enjoyable at the end of the day. Palworld, on the other hand is just not the answer for an alternative to Pokémon, because it just copies many things and does a lot of generic and forced stuff, like the guns and slavery.

      2. …and one could easily claim that you’re bootlicking a big corporation, so this gets us nowhere.

Look, I do agree that Nintendo gets too much shit for the way they defend their IP, I’ve watched all the Moon Channel videos and can understand Nintendo’s side of things. I actually wish others would actually listen to REAL lawyers discuss the legality of this and not give their opinions while simultaneously speaking out of their rectums on topics they know nothing about.

That being said… they did this to themselves. This is mostly the fault of Game Freak and The Pokémon Company, but Nintendo is partly at fault for letting Pokémon get to the point of “Scarlet/Violet.” As the publisher, they should’ve stepped in for quality control, because Scarlet/Violet being released in the state it was in is absolutely indefensible. I wish Nintendo had stepped aside and let TPC and Game Freak deal with this, as they’re the real problem here. I don’t think winning this battle will help them in the end.

Because at the end of the day, this just looks like a company that’s on the defense and is scared of competition. Palworld wouldn’t need to exist had Game Freak, TPC, and Nintendo actually stepped up and delivered what the overwhelming majority of Pokémon fans ACTUALLY wanted.

          1. ”Yes, “shill”, another buzzword to discredit what I say.” cause you are one. I’ve never seen you siding with anything other than Nintendo

“Yes, they have bugs and other problems but they are very enjoyable at the end of the day. “
That’s because you are the one who has low standards, everyone who is sane in the head can see that the quality of the newer games is nowhere near the new ones

“you talk like Palworld is a good game and the Switch Pokémon games are not good”
Both suck but game freak sucks even harder cause they have a great franchise in their hands and they keep making lazy slop that only SHILLS LIKE Y O U can like

            1. I don’t feel sorry for the Palworld devs. The game may be fun to play, but it could’ve at least had an ounce of soul and originality. And even if I was interested in playing it (I’m not), all you obnoxious Palworld fans have made it so I’d never want to touch it with a ten foot pole. Congratulations!

Also, I loved S&V in spite of their flaws, so…yeah.

            2. Tentri, maybe you should be worried about where your mom goes at night, and not other people having a different opinion on a video game than you.

        1. Your argument makes you seem like you don’t understandwhat’s going on. Maybe you should read up on things? Because you are only making yourself look stupid Joshy. Like your mom when she sits on the corner, she’s not going to get any action because she doesn’t understand that no one wants her filthy snatch. Savvy?

You are the definition of ignorance. LOL 😂😆

      3. What? Nothing in Palworld is plagiarism. They clearly were inspired by Pokemon, but nothing is literal copyright infringement. I hope they counter sue Nintendo and win.

      4. @Endisend
You might want to look up what cognitive dissonance is because you got it bad.

Pokemon is a good brand but a terrible series of games now. Somehow it’s fans doesn’t seem to notice this until an indie game makes them all realize how stagnant Pokemon games are now by comparison. I mean jeez… what other company could sell two slightly different versions of the same buggy game and get away with it?

If they feel threatened by Palworld, they should up their game instead of trying to intimidate and sue the competition.

        1. @CFG exactly my thoughts, what Endisend doesn’t realize is that the reason we despise this decision so much is not because we hate the series, we actually love it. Pokèmon gave us some of the best experiences in gaming, we HATE to see the franchise becoming this terrible and we want the best from pokèmon cause we know they can, they did it in the past and they have the resources to do it, but instead of improving in quality, they are trying to silence competitors with lawsuits and that is terrible, I don’t want another fucking scarlet and violet, and this lawsuit just tells me that they will continue on their route of selling unfinished slop.

        2. Unironically why not do both? It’s not like by upping your games they should stop suing/litigating. This is not limited to video game industry but free market competition is unkind to companies that can’t defend their rights/patents. Especially in tech/creative industries even more so.

          1. @Why

You should absolutely sue if something is infringing on your IP. Palworld, however, was not. The fact that the Pokemon Co is going after a patent infringement instead of copyright is telling.

            1. IANAL so i honestly don’t know the difference between IP vs Patent infringement in the eyes of court. Especially Japanese court. But after searching around i found that there was a precedence of patent infringement case in Nintendo vs COLOPL on a Japanese court. And surprise surpise Nintendo won that one. Let’s see how it goes with Nintendo vs Pocketpair.

  5. The fact that they never took a lawsuit against PlayStation All Stars back in the day implies it is true. They waited it out to see if it would go somewhere and now it has they’re tackling it. The thing with stuff like Pokémon is they’ve been the only one of their kind for so long that those involved want it to remain that way

  6. So many armchair lawyers here talking out of their rectum. Just don’t forget the fact that this lawsuit was made in Japan with of course Japanese patent laws. We’ll see what happen. My bet is on Nintendo winning since there was precedent with the Shironeko project lawsuit.

  7. My god but what should we not read as nonsense here…
“Palworld wouldn’t have existed if pokemon would have been good”…

Uh, are you aware that palworld will not be released by nintendo, just like pokemon by the competition?…
In my opinion, it’s more like this meaning “since Nintendo doesn’t want to become multi-platform, let’s release a pokémon-like from the competition!” or better still “since pokemon brings in billions, let’s do the same!” I bet no one thought that given the level here…

And to say that Palwolrd doesn’t plagiarize anything is to be blind or in bad faith!

As for apprentice lawyers, I would like to point out that a court must examine and then validate the admissibility of the complaint… And if that’s the case, you can dance if you want but the complaint will have consequences.

But it’s true, for you, Nintendo “it’s the bad guys”…

    1. @Sofiona
I’ve yet to see an example of Palworld plagiarizing anything. I’ve only seen delusional claims that Pokemon owns the rights to caricature fantasy animals. The Dragon Quest vs Pokemon image that keeps popping up in these discussions is a pretty good way to show the absurdity of claiming creature design originality.

I have no idea who you were replying to, but I feel like that statement “Palworld wouldn’t have existed if pokemon would have been good” is probably just a badly worded way of saying “Palworld wouldn’t have been as popular if pokemon games were of higher quality”. This is probably why the person in the original article thinks Nintendo feels threatened by Palworld. It’s hard to maintain your brand if other games are releasing more enjoyable games. Heck, Palworld just seems to be a huge survival-crafting type game to me so I feel like that shows how low the bar was for Pokemon games. It’s really only been surviving by it’s brand recognition rather than the quality of it’s games. I’ve said it before, but there is no developer today who could sell two versions of the same, buggy game and get away with it. They would be lambasted so hard.

Heck, let’s switch the two games for a moment. Let’s say Pokemon released a game like Palworld (exactly as it is) and then some indie developer released Scarlet and Violet (exactly as they are minus Pokemon IP). I’d say that indie dev would be raked over the coals but honestly they’d probably just fall into obscurity with their commercial failure.
