Digital Foundry seem convinced last week’s Switch 2 leak was legitimate

Tech gaming site Digital Foundry has published their latest DF Weekly which is titled “The Switch 2 hardware leak is almost certainly real – so what have we learned?” which suggests they are convinced that the leak which appeared online last week is the real deal. Therefore the team has taken a look at the specifications which seem to suggest it will feature PlayStation 4 quality visuals, which is great considering it is predominately a handheld system. If you are interested in an in-depth analysis of the Switch 2 specifications then be sure to give the article a read here.

  1. It was wishful thinking, but I was hoping it would be Series S quality or even PS4 pro. PS4 still looks nice though, so that’ll be completely fine. (I know I know, this is still a rumor.)

      1. That’s not going to happen. The Switch 2 only has 60GB/s of max memory bandwidth meaning even it’s SOC could exceed what the PS4 Pro could do, it would be memory bandwidth restrained. The Switch 2 has 32% slower memory than the Steamdeck (88GB/s) and 72% slower memory than the PS4 Pro (217.6GB/s). More importantly, just because the dock would allow it to run without the power limitations of a handheld, that doesn’t mean that it can solve the thermal limitations.

  2. Praying it’s over base pS4 and in docked a bit over PS4 pro almost 5…. So we can actually get big AAA third party games cuz they’ve skipped switch and it be nice to get them to bad out Nintendo’s dry spots

    1. No idea what the hell happened when I tried to do a comment. Either way…

While I have been extremely happy with the Switch overall, I still wish Nintendo would have done a proper home console in the Switch family. Just like the Switch Lite was just handheld, I would have wanted a Switch “Pro” that would have been just docked. Basically cover all of it. The hybrid for something in between or either the Lite if you wanted just a handheld or a Pro for more power.

Probably never gonna happen though. And honestly, gamers shitting on Nintendo for not going for proper power should have bought a god damn Gamecube, because that not selling well led to their current mentality around consoles.

  3. Yeah I didn’t interpret that at all from their conversation. They didn’t even mention “base PS4” in the conversation? Anyway, in terms of raw horsepower, it seems like it will be just a little bit above PS4, but it will have so many more features that make it more capable overall. The AI upscaling solution will already be enough to make it take on current gen games that target 60fps and run them at 30fps. Plus, the hardware will most likely support some level of raytracing… Technology doesn’t evolve in a linear better CPU, more RAM, etc.. trajectory. Current technological solutions to old problems also enhance a devices ability. I would say for sure the system will be Steam Deck level and hopefully a few points more.

This site writers has some kind of bias against Nintendo sometimes. The ads money from Nintendo drama/bashing articles must be good lol. Anyway I agree with your take that it’s not as simple as “base PS4” for the Switch 2 potential capabilities.

  4. I’m not at all convinced that all this is true… and after reading the Digital Foundry article, I concluded that it’s a lot (too much?) speculation and absolutely nothing tangible

I’d rather wait for Nintendo’s reveal than imagine anything, especially since it looks too much like a switch for it to be that….

  5. PS4 came out in 2013 – how the eff are Nintendo fans celebrating getting a system that has tech from a decade ago in it? Is this what the fan base is now? That means by the end of the damn things cycle it will have tech from like 17-18 years ago… I bet it’ll also be like $400 at launch and never go down in price.

    1. Because Nintendo fans aren’t dumb enough to pay $700 for a new console.

This generation was absolutely the point of diminishing returns in the graphics department. Games have become too bloated and expensive to make that we’re not seeing anything new and original because you can only play it safe when you’re putting such a huge budget behind a new game.

We need some more AA games. Ones we can play on the toilet with our Switch 2.

  6. What’s wrong with this site? I’ve tried submitting an on topic, non harmful, well thought out comment multiple times and it won’t upload. I better not refresh the page only to find my comment pasted 7 times in a row with this comment no where to be seen explaining the situation maximizing the awkwardness ten fold!

    1. I’ve got this several times and my conclusion is if you make too many spicy comments the admin won’t like it and put your IP through a temporary review state. what spicy comments? weirdly enough it’s usually if you bash Sony/Playstation but NOT when you bash Nintendo. Hmmmmmm……

      1. I don’t really make spicey comments very often. Sometimes I get into debates, but their on topic and only discuss my logic to defend my opinion. That’s about as spicey as it gets.

      2. Also, this comment I tried uploading wasn’t even in a debate. I was merely talking about why I thought this rumor is probably true. There weren’t any replies and I wasn’t replying to anyone else either. It was as non-spicey as it gets, so I’m stumped here…

  7. Actually, I just realized that 6GB LPDDR chips don’t exist so it would have a 128-bit memory bus which brings it’s bandwidth up to 120GB/s. That still puts it below the PS4 though cache size and behavior could make up for that. I don’t think it could bring it to PS4 Pro performance though.

  8. I don’t believe any of the rumored specs or the images that were ai (or otherwise) generated. Even if they are all true, I doubt we end up getting the bigger third party games since they are just so dang massive on the install size. So my only concerns are will it be BC, if it is will there be any enhancements to BC, and then what are the games at launch and in the first year. Games are why I buy consoles, not specs. Switch having Zelda BotW at launch was a deciding factor as I didn’t want the WiiU version or the need for the big tablet controller. Switch 2 needs something like the next big 3D Mario platformer, Metroid Prime 4 with enhancements for Switch 2, and then a new mainline Zelda sometime the following year. Other main series like Smash Bros and Mario Kart in the near future. A normal Pro controller (or just let me keep using my Switch pro controller) would be great. It doesn’t matter to me if it stacks up to the PS4 or PS4 pro or steamdeck or whatever in specs. Nintendo seems to always manage to get more out of their hardware than other companies. Part of that is in how the hardware is arranged and how parts have changed and are now manufactured in smaller form factors. But a lot of it is just that this is their specialty. They aren’t trying to make a multimedia device or be the center of your home entertainment… they make game systems and games. They still understand efficient coding.
