The Nintendo Switch has been such a massive sales success that there’s only one video gaming home console that Nintendo’s hybrid hardware has left to surpass. Sony’s PlayStation 2, which originally launched in 2000, is currently clinging to the top spot. However, the Switch is very close, and it seems that Sony is aware of this.
For example, former PlayStation head Jim Ryan was saying back in March that the PlayStation 2 sold 160,000,000 copies. Well, now Sony themselves are saying the same thing on their PlayStation 30th anniversary site. As of September 30th of this year, the Switch has sold 146,040,000 units, meaning that they only need another 14,000,000 to surpass the PlayStation 2.

160 million is an insane number even today. The PS2 had an incredible run and a massive game library, so it’s not surprising it held the top spot for so long. That said, the Switch getting this close is really impressive. It’ll be interesting to see if it actually manages to pass it.
