Reggie Fils-Aime responds to The Game Awards 2024 viewership numbers

former nintendo of America president reggie fils-aime

The Game Awards have concluded for another year, but people are still digesting the news of just how many people ended up watching the show this year. One of them is former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Reggie has had a history at The Game Awards himself. When he was still with Nintendo, he was there to help present announcements the company had to share. When he retired, he would become a presenter at the show.

Reggie reacted to the news of The Game Awards 2024 breaking viewership records, commenting that the show is “the biggest global entertainment event of our time, now shockingly bigger than NFL’s Super Bowl”. While the show, indeed, is rivaling the Super Bowl with viewership, it isn’t actually the biggest global entertainment. For example, the 2022 FIFA World Cup final had 1,500,000,000 viewers via television alone. Nevertheless, you can see Reggie’s comments down below.

    1. i enjoyed it a lot but yeah, i have to agree, was not expecting the switch 2 obviously but i don’t know, was hoping for at least one new nintendo game? could have been a port would have been fine. but i expected this, we have to wait next year for anything new nintendo related

  1. On what metric is this? I don’t seriously believe that 154 million people were watching The Game Awards. I certainly didn’t, and I don’t know anyone who did.

    1. I’m going to bet that the figures here for The Game Awards are using some stupid metric like Youtube views or whatever that way overinflates vs others which just using standard TV ratings figures. But just a guess.

    2. Κωνσταντίνος Λαπιώτης

YOU is YOU. YOU is not ME, HIM, HER, IT, THEY, EVERYONE. And you don’t know ANYONE >>> in your own microcosm. Your ANYONE is not EVERYONE. EVERYONE is 8.025.000.000 people on Earth. So, you are not in a position to know ANYONE or EVERYONE. Is that clear?

      1. Their numbers suggest that 1 in every 50 people on Earth was watching The Game Awards. The people I know tend to be gamers and so the chances should be higher still. My anecdotal evidence does count for something, and so does common sense (what has more cultural impact, Super Bowl or The Game Awards? I live in the UK and the answer to that question is still very obviously the Super Bowl). They are very likely doing something like counting VOD views for trailers or something similar, which will inevitably lead to double counting and also makes it not comparable to Super Bowl TV.

    1. Oh God no. Everything wrong with the Wii had Reggie behind it. He’s marketed that thing to the casual market, and it became a casual box. Let’s also not forget he was also behind the marketing of the failure that was the Wii U. Yes Reggie was president for switch as well, but by then Furukawa had taken the reigns of NoA.

      Keep Reggie away.

  2. Speaking of the Game Awards and Astro Bot, there’s a thought I want to share with you guys because I’d like to have more perspectives on the matter: I honestly feel like people WAY overpraise this game when compared to the 3d Mario games. Like compared to the moveset Mario has in each of his games, the one of Astro Bot is VERY limited (Jump, minijet to float and spinning attack… that’s it), the difficulty is very low compared to the Mario games, and for the 80% of the time we fight always the same enemies all the time. Honestly the more I think about this whole story, the more I scratch my head in thinking that people find Astro Bot superior, or worse they claim to not want to play Mario anymore after playing Astro Bot…

      1. Honestly… if Astro Bot was against any 3d Mario game that isn’t Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario 3d Land, it would have lost. It won that award both because the competition wasn’t AS STRONG as past years’ winners AND because… I feel it was pretty rigged (like, I feel pretty much all the other competitors were more deserving, except the Elden Ring’s DLC, and that’s only because it’s a DLC). If people are start ditching and hating Mario only because Astro Bot exists and won the GOTY let me tell ya, they’re just a mass of ********. And I have no problem in saying it openly.

        1. Just for reference. Astrobot is 94 on Metacritic and 9.2 on user reviews.
Personally think it’s a 10/10 game and fully deserves GOTY

        2. I want you to listen to me very closely… no one disses Mario 3D Land or Sunshine and gets away with it on my watch. Each of those games defined a generation.

          1. Meh, they just don’t stand a chance against all the others 3d Mario game. Sunshine is broken in several parts of it (some levels are frustratingly hard because of bad game design, like the Pachinko level), I never liked the FLUDD mechanic, and the fact that you can’t even know where are the Blue Coins you missed is a further game breaker for people like me who love to 100% platformers. As for Super Mario 3D Land… it’s just WAAAAY too simple for a platformer, which I can get behind since it’s thought for an handheld console, but its successor 3D World it’s basically what this game was meant to be in the first place. 3D Land really feels like a beta of 3D World in comparison to me….

So yeah: as much I consider Astro Bot inferior to most of Mario’s 3d platformers, I would still play fairly, and put is above those two.

              1. No I’m not. I’m just saying that those two are just inferior to all the others. 64, Galaxy 1 and 2, 3D World and Odyssey are still among the best 3D platformers you can find in gaming, and I would never put them above Astro Bot in any way. Just because I think that Sunshine and 3D Land are inferior to all the other 3d Mario games and Astro Bot, it doesn’t mean I “trash” Mario games…

                  1. No it doesn’t. I’m just saying that it’s better than those two solely because they are inferior. But it still doesn’t stand a chance against all the other ones. Are you mocking me?

                    1. @ABC

I’m not mocking you. I’m trying to keep things light-hearted here. I hope you can forget about whatever crazy people that pulled you into fictional battles of games and consoles. They are annoying so there’s really no reason to perpetuate them by participating. Astrobot vs Mario? Purely fictional. We live in a reality where both exist and you can buy and play both. Anyone telling you different is lying to you.

    1. When you’re starving in a desert, even a turd sandwich will fill you up.

Now I’m not saying Astro bot is bad by any means, but being a Sony only fan this year was horrible. So anything would’ve gotten praised. And it did.

Now to say that AB is any better than 3D Land, is crazy talk. They’re both great games with very simple mechanics. Neither ask of very much, but because its a Sony game, it automatically gets a boosted score.

Sony games now have the Nintendo effect, they will get points added just for being a Nintendo/Sony product. Regardless of the quality.

      1. I think you are just salty tbh, the whole turd sandwich thing is pretty dumb when astrobot had to compete with black myth wukong, metaphor, elden ring and final fantasy rebirth, do those look like turd sandwiches to you?
“ Now to say that AB is any better than 3D Land, is crazy talk” that’s not crazy at all.

        1. How so? When as you said, it literally had no competition. FF7R came out in Feb. The only competition it had was Refantazio and Wukong. And Refantazio is a completely different genre. Elden Ring came out in 2022, so God knows why you even brought that up. The Playstation platform is in a dry spell. It’s in worst shape than the Xbox, and that’s saying something. Like I said, when you’re hungry, you’ll eat anything, and when you’re starving, everything taste amazing.

  3. Not to disrespect Reggie, but why the need to keep bowing his head to Geoff, also the game awards bigger than the super bowl?

        1. I think the GAME Awards should have more games. And I don’t mean game trailers but just actual games for the audience to play. Let GOTY be settled in a free for all Smash tourney.

          1. Smash games? Nah let’s bring back roman games, let a real tiger run around the audience a make a huge bloodshed, the winner chooses game of the year

  4. It’s easy for TGA to outdo viewers over the Superbowl. Mainly because most people watch the Superbowl in large groups, so it’s only on a TV here & there. Sometimes the group is huge because of bars. Also casinos where people will bet on the game while playing slots, poker, etc. Meanwhile, alot of people will watch the TGA on their phones, tablets, desktops, game consoles, & laptops by themselves. Not many big, large, or huge gatherings for game awards. Least not on the same level as the Superbowl.

No one here apparently has taken this into account. That said, the sports fanatics are gonna absolutely hate hearing anything is better than their sports.
