Research firm Newzoo has compiled its annual PC & Console Gaming Report 2025 which reveals the shifts in trends in the video game industry on a yearly basis. This year’s report notes that the battle royale genre of games, which includes the mighty Fortnite and Apex Legends, amongst others, has been seeing a decline in interest by jaded gamers, with overall playtime going from 19% in 2021 to 12% in 2024. Though it should be noted that it is not all bad news for Epic Games as Fortnite went from a 43% share of the battle royale genre in 2021 to a 77% share in 2024. Interestingly, the report states that the RPG genre has seen up upturn in growth with a 9% share in 2021 and a 13% share in 2024.

Not surprising… all these games follow a “pay to win” or “freemium” model and it’s getting worse and worse, moreover they don’t really renew themselves, Epic game which is forced to join forces with other companies to revive a (meagre) interest in Fortnite

About time! I get that battle royal was popular for a while, but when many publishers began chasing Fortnite and failing left and right it was getting old. Most of these battle royale games failed to take off and I rolled my eyes every time I saw another one try.
The new trend is clearly multiplayer co-op games. Chained together R.E.P.O Phantasmagoria Helldivers 2 It takes Two Lethal Company. And you know what, I’m pretty happy, multiplayer games with friends are the best way to experience games for me. Hopefully more couch co-op and versus games. My switch is filled with those games.
