Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel titled “Super Mario World”

After the huge box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo and Illumination were quick to announce that a sequel was in development. Set to hit theaters on 3rd April 2026, not much else has been known about the project, except that Yoshi would be playing an important role, as hinted at by the post-credit scene of the first CG-animated film.

In a press release from NBCUniversal that goes over their future content slate, the title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel was seemingly revealed, with “Super Mario World” listed alongside other upcoming blockbusters. Yoshi’s first in-game appearance was Super Mario World (1990) on the SNES, so it makes perfect sense for the sequel, which will heavily feature the fan-favourite character, to use the same name.

Super Mario World is being produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and written by Matthew Fogel.

  1. Just take some more risks with this one. While I enjoyed watching the first one I can barely remember any specifics. Maybe my edible was too big though.

    1. Never had a weed before; wouldn’t the edible make it harder for you to remember plot details of any movie? The Mario movie may not have been “peak cinema”, but it had a decent plot for a PG movie

      1. Yea I’m saying maybe part of the reason I can’t remember ant details is due to me being too high. Which fits with my review. Fun to watch but not very memorable. Just my opinion.

  2. Excited to see Yoshi take center stage in Super Mario World! It’s a perfect throwback to his roots in the classic 1990 game. Speaking of iconic games, The Spike Volleyball offers a similar thrill with its fast-paced gameplay, reminding us of the adrenaline rush that Mario’s early adventures brought!

  3. I don’t like it. I hate it when things have the same name. I don’t want to have to always specify SMW “the game” or “the movie” now.

  4. Considering Yoshi’s first introduction was on Dino Island this makes a lot of sense. I wish they added in the Super Mario Land save Daisy Plot so they could introduce Space in the 3rd Movie.
