Digital Foundry: Nintendo Switch games do run better on Nintendo Switch 2

The tech-focussed team at Digital Foundry has been trying out one of the worst performing games on the Nintendo Switch, which is Batman: Arkham Knight, on the Nintendo Switch 2 and they’ve been pleased with the results. Digital Foundry says that the game runs much better on the newer hardware and that “Switch 1 games do run better on Switch 2.” This is good news for any game that you own on the original console which had performance hiccups, as hopefully some of the issues that you had might be resolved.

“The first game I tested was Batman: Arkham Knight, described by DF’s Oliver Mackenzie as “the worst performing software I have reviewed to date at Digital Foundry”. 18 months on he says it still is – but the good news is that Switch 2 fixes all of its performance issues, at times doubling performance. Put simply, Switch 1 games do run better on Switch 2.”

    1. It’s similar to PS5 and Xbox Series X in that older games can take advantage of the newer hardware without needing software updates. It’s a great thing.

  1. Did not expect this. Will be interesting story to follow and maybe DF will do a more complete report on the subject.

    1. It’s actually not obvious at all because no previous Nintendo iteration of backwards compatibility ever did this. But as Switch 2 is not emulating the original hardware, it gets to utilise its power.

  2. This is what we thought. Games with FPS drops on Switch can be helped on Switch 2 with no update. Hopefully it will also make dynamic resolution less aggressive on some games and I’m sure we’ll hear about this in the coming days.

I do hope that devs take the time to increase the FPS cap on some of their games for Switch 2 now though. That can start with Nintendo and TTYD. But also stuff like Doom will now clearly be able to hit 60fps on Switch 2.

  3. Super Mario RPG running at a buttery smooth 60fps all the way through is such a delight. The game’s one flaw was always the fps hiccups, but now it’s perfect.

  4. Whoop-Dee-Doo so glad the fun police give their seal of approval.
I honestly think they are the singular reason for gaming descending into nothing but FPS and DPI bull-shittery.
