Digital Foundry tackles Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World is finally available along with the Nintendo Switch 2 so who better to tackle the game than tech-enthusiasts Digital Foundry. The team has come away generally impressed with Mario Kart World on the new hardware which is 1080p when played in handheld mode and 1440p when played docked. The game runs at a silky smooth locked 60fps when played handheld and docked and only slips to 30fps when in photo mode. You can check out Digital Foundry’s full thoughts in the video down below.

“TV image quality is generally fine…holding up well on a 4K television set from a typical viewing distance. Docked mode also gets a touch of post-process image treatment to adjust the 1440p resolution…handheld mode fairs a bit better though, despite its lower pixel count. There’s no anti-aliasing of any kind here, so the 1080p pixel count maps perfectly onto the 1080p Switch 2 display.”

“Visually speaking, World offers some beautiful sights with key rendering advances over prior Mario Kart games, though a lot of rendering power has gone into making the open world work. It’s really the incredible quality of Nintendo’s artistry that stands out the most here…plus it packs good resolution and frame rate metrics in portable and docked play without the low internal resolutions that typify a lot of early Switch 2 software.”

  1. Knockout mode looks decent but honestly how can they say they’re impressed by this??

8 years to make it, how? It’s just tracks, some sewn together for free roam mode and some missions scattered around.. and that’s it, sorry but.. Diddy Kong Racing still did it better. I really don’t get this coming from Nintendo, I mean I can’t bash it too much because it’s “just” Mario Kart..

However it also comes off as kinda lazy.

    1. You realise calling yourself “TruthBringer” doesn’t actually add any more credibility to your opinions, right?
Just makes yourself look kinda pathetic ngl.

          1. Well everyone we have true Nintendo fan here. Defend game taking 8 years to make and having bear minimum in terms of stuff to do.. ya well done Nintendo.

  2. I had a little fun with this game but I am finna have to agree with the first comment

The game is a bit empty with content

  3. Freeroam seems very low res, ok but not blown away. Should have introduced a new dynamic like punctures & pit stops.

  4. There are plenty of charming “missions” in free roam, some of which are actually quite challenging and train you quite well for Gran Prix. A story mode would have made it feel more worth the official price of $80 (most of us will spend $50 which is more than fair) but you can definitely tell they left the door wide open for DLC and if it’s free then this can potentially evolve into the best cart racer ever over time.

  5. Yeah, I bought the bundle. After spending hours upon hours trying to unlock racers, karts and cups, etc., I can truly say I wish I had bought the system and then bought Fantasy Life i or Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD instead. A good long RPG with a story would have been more fulfilling than a kart racer that only rewards time and effort with stickers you can only use one at a time and are not noticeable on the kart you are using. Same goes for collecting alternate outfits for certain racers and treating it like is a new racer to use. At least there are plenty of Karts to choose from as you unlock them collecting coins. Knockout Tour is the one thing they did right to give you that on the edge of your seat fulfillment with a Battle Royale race to finish first and fight hard for it. Mario Kart World is not even close to an 80 dollar game and 50 dollars is still questionable.
