SEGA and the Sonic Team have been tinkering with the state of the art Unreal Engine 5 testing the various tools as their disposal and have recreated one of the cutscenes found in Sonic x Shadow Generations. It is only a very short display, but gives us a promising look at how Sonic could look in his next mainline 3D entry which is thought to be a sequel to Sonic Frontiers. Everybody abandoning their in-house engines 😭
Yeah, it seems like it. I’m not a fan of developers abandoning proprietary engines—very few are able to maintain a modern engine that keeps up with new technology and remains optimized. Monster Hunter comes to mind: great game, but lacking in performance. I loved Square’s Luminous Studio, but it was too much to maintain. Halo Infinite struggled big time, unfortunately. And when was the last time we saw something truly new and mainstream built on CryEngine?
All good examples. I know CDPR is also shifting things to Unreal after the terrible Cyberpunk launch. I guess engine maintenance is just an overhead most big studios can’t afford to keep up with, especially if they’re making large-scale games.
It’s mainly that it’s easier, cheaper, and faster to take a engine like Unreal Engine, which is quite flexible and easy to use, rather than developing your own engine… Even Nintendo seems to be heading in this direction as we have had some Switch games from them using Unreal Engine 4.
Let’s hope GameFreak is next.
