Borderlands 4 was one of many new video games playable at this week’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany and it wasn’t the only one which had trouble running on the Nintendo Switch 2. Content creator EpicNNG went hands on with the game and says that the forthcoming looter shooter struggled with framerate issues and could barely run at 30fps. He also said that input delay was a big issue and that the render resolution had to be whacked down for it to run.
Borderlands 4 also appears to have performance issues on Nintendo Switch 2

Yeah, I’m not getting Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2.
The performance of Cyberpunk, Yakuza, WWE 2k25, Apex, Fortnite and some of the unreleased games that we have seen so far (Kirby Air Riders, Metroid Prime 4) can show that smart optimization for the system is possible, but then you have games like this or FC26 (30fps) ( that somehow looks worst that FC25 on Ps4 (60fps) even when is clear that the Switch 2 is more powerful system) that gives “lazy port” vibes and diminish what can be accomplished on the system.
I literally don’t see why people are panicking. The game isn’t out for a month or 2 on switch 2. The game at gamescon probably was from an older build by a couple months also. You can just export a game segment and dust off your hands.
To me, these companies that even showed up with it are shooting themselves in the foot. I see why they don’t allow people to show footage. Also taking about builds that are still needing months of polish, besides what they already had going after the demo was made, doesn’t look good for those companies or the people that literally think the hardware is just barely better than s1.
Give it time guys. If it launches crap or a week later it is still crap then I agree, why bring it? These early showings shouldn’t have happened. I wouldn’t have sent it out if I was gearbox.
I meant you can NOT just export a game segment as a demo.
I did played Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch 2 and it seems to be running pretty smoothly on the system framerates. Even on a handheld mode as well. I figured Borderlands 4 have some issues with the system animation and framerates. The Switch 2 is a powerful system indeed as promise by the new Nintendo president, but he is still aiming to increase its transitions for their newest hardware.
These performances for third parties DO NOT look good for switch 2 man, this is a really big issue with modern gaming engines and optimization more than the hardware itself. If we have already having performance issues in the first months of the console release what the hell are they gonna do for the next years. I’ll buy the switch 2 for the Nintendo games but like cmon can we have at least some decent third party releases?
Well, consumers will have to choose with their wallets and buy products that are made with actual dedication and care. It have been like this too long now, even the Wii had some masterpieces and the poorest of the ports and games at the same time. The first Fifa 18 for Switch one was a compelling game, sure, used an older engine but ran smoothly and looked decent and then… They decided to rehash the same game 4 times… Im almost sure that the new FC is more like an upgrade of the Switch port than a downgrade of a ps5 one ( and im not saying this as a compliment) is just too lazy.
Yeah I know but I’m very let down by the missed potential of the switch 2, what I wanted from a successor for the switch was a mix between a steam deck and a Nintendo console, an hardware that allows me to play Nintendo and more demanding games from the current gen, Cyberpunk is proof that switch 2 is capable of doing that, this console doesn’t have to be the same old Nintendo console that runs your Nintendo games and has some mediocre ports on the side, it really can be more than that.
Yeah, but if you really think about it, almost all games for the past 2 years have been really difficult to run well, even on more demanding GPUs is not even a Switch 2/console problem, is a more generalized focus from the developers that hides the poor optimization behind dlss, frame generation and other tools instead of using this ON TOP of already good versions of their games. Games like Doom 2016, Battlefield 1, Wolfestein 2 (among others) still looks and run great on a 6 year old laptop connected to my tv… But newer games that looks and plays worst somehow don’t…
Yeah that’s what is said in my first comment, but if people can run those games on a steam deck fairly well which is way weaker than a switch 2 there is a huge chance they can run great on there too
If only their games wasn’t that complicated on the Nintendo Platforms. Take Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Grand Theft Auto Trilogy collection and Beyond Good & Evil remaster for example. They suffer major framerates issues, animation bug problems and glitches after release. The original Nintendo Switch power is not really good enough for the games to run well on the platform after developers ignoring the optimizations for the system performance. I mean, those games look unpolish and undone. They didn’t even have more time to make it perfect in the oven. I really can’t even imagine or think what will Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2 and Genshin Impact performance will be like on the Switch 2 system for third party developers.
I can agree with you on that. I think third party companies like SEGA did with Shadow Generations planning to do the upgraded version of the Switch 2 system with increase framerates and animations. I mean, think about it. Nintendo is trying to catch up with PlayStation and Xbox for the 4K graphics hardware. I hate to say this but your right about the third party games issues. I figured there will be a few third party games issues with the Switch 2 horsepower.
I have one modern third party game on my Switch 2 Street Fighter 6 and it runs a smooth 60FPS online and in vs mode offline…so games can run great on Switch 2
Switch 2 feels more like a Switch pro. It does not feel like a generational leap in performance. I was totally disappointed by the inability to hit 60 fps in most games. I’ll be surprised if 3rd party devs stick around. The games are already overpriced and with so many handhelds to choose from it’s going to be a hard sale to get consumers to pay more money for the same game they can buy for a fraction of the the cost and play on a PC handheld with better performance.
My 2 month old Switch 2 is collecting dust, while Im still gaming on my Legion GO, Asus ROG Ally, and Steamdeck OLED. After 2 years the novelty of PC handheld gaming hasn’t worn off. It only took me 1 month to get bored of my Switch 2.
It’s collecting dust because Nintendo are bringing out games which lack content, they just want giant boring deserts or easy games. And where are all the major releases? Where’s new Star Fox? Pilot Wings? Give us good games with plenty of content and challenge.
Looks like lack of optimzation to me.
