Fatal Frame 2 Remake director says new technology enabling holding hands is a game changer

One of the surprise announcements during the recent Nintendo Direct presentation is that Fatal Frame 2 is getting a remake. It’s been a long time since the original game made its debut and technology has come a very long way. One thing that the team really wanted to do in the original was have the two sisters be able to hold hands during scary segments, but due to technical limitations at the time they just couldn’t accomplish it. Now with Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake they have finally made their dream a reality.

“We added a new element: holding hands with your sister, Mayu,” Shibata says. “By doing this, the story, but also the action and the bond between the sisters is further developed.”

“We were exploring this possibility 20 years ago, but we gave up on it for a number of reasons. This full remake gave us the perfect opportunity to revisit this option.”

    1. They’re not saying it was impossible to do, as there were obviously games that could do it, but it was very tedious and hard to do. There’s a difference dedicating a good portion of your staff to a small detail like this, and using an existing technology being implemented by one or two people.

  1. Can we finally get Itagaki back for Dead Or Alive. Even like a remake of those games and add like a proper single player story mode to it get Nagoshi Studio to assist.

  2. Holding a characters’ hand at any time was literally done decades ago in the game called Ico by Japan Studios on the ps2.
This is not game changing or new for that matter so hat is this article even talking😮‍💨

  3. From what I understand this was intended to be a nice but relatively unimportant feature in the original game where I was with ICO it was actually a main game mechanic.

I think it has more to do with priority than it does with it being possible. He specifically says it was for a number of reasons. Not any one

  4. Really cool to see how much technology has advanced—something as simple as being able to hold hands in Fatal Frame 2 actually changes the emotional weight of the story a lot. It’s small details like this that make remakes worth revisiting. On a lighter note, when I’m not reading gaming news I like to relax with a good laugh at a puns and jokes
website —it’s a nice balance between spooky games and humor.
