Nintendo is currently considering acquiring video game companies

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has set out the various ways the Kyoto-based company will invest in order to bolster the company in video game development, non-game entertainment such as movies, and expanding relationships with customers. One of the ways they are looking to increase and strengthen game development is purchasing video game companies in order to make them subsidiaries. Here’s the outline:

  • First is strengthening game development. We will work to strengthen the internal game development organization within the Nintendo group. This includes initiatives such as acquiring development companies to make them subsidiaries and augmenting our development facilities, and the construction of Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2 (tentative name).
  • Second is building software assets in non-game entertainment. Taking into account the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie , we will allocate funds to more actively pursue business opportunities that have an affinity with our game business, including but not limited to movies.
  • Third is the foundation for maintaining and expanding our relationships with consumers. We will utilize funds to maintain and expand our touchpoints with consumers, centered on the Nintendo Account system.

      1. I would have been happy to read this news a year or so ago, but why now? Why has Nintendo’s leadership changed so much? They feel so “corporate” now… I’m not sure I would want them to buy any companies knowing that they will fall under Nintendo’s new greedy leadership.

    1. I understand that first party Nintendo games enjoy better optimization generally, but if the Switch version of Sonic Frontiers is anything to go by… Please let SEGA stay 3rd party. PS5 versions of Frontiers and Shadow Generations play smooth like butter!

      1. Yeah no. If Nintendo bought Sega that would be awesome! Exclusive too even better. Pokemon Atlus game could be cool and finally let Platinum make a Shadow 2, a AAA Sonic game by Nintendo would be amazing, RGG could make F-Zero, TMS could make Nintendo anime given Sega owns them too.

        1. @DontFightIt @Cciz Can you greedy brats go five minutes without comparing Mario to Sonic? The only way I would be okay with Nintendo buying Sega is if Nintendo buys Capcom first. And don’t tell me to go five minutes without comparing Mario to Mega Man. Mega Man has seniority and didn’t try to kill Nintendo. Third party doesn’t count. Don’t call me a boomer for remembering the console wars either. A Sonic Crosswords commercial implies Sega still hates Nintendo.

          1. Sven of Capcon USA laid this out in detail several years back, but Capcom will never be sold. They have too many machinations in place to prevent this. Pretty much all of their games have to tank for this to be a possibility and currently Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Street Fighter are doing extremely well.

      2. Exactly. Nintendo would purposely crippled Sonic to steelman Mario. Sonic does not need to be owned by Nintendo. That would be the death of Sonic.

        1. Sonic has been the death of Sonic since the Genesis, he’s not had a game worth playing that wasn’t a racing title. Nintendo would turn him into a true gaming icon, not a laughingstock

      3. If SEGA had one platform to worry about instead of 4, and had Nintendo’s wallet, tools, and experience with the hardware, they’d release the beat versions of their games possible. This is why 1st party exclusives typically are showcase titles and games from Ubislop are mediocre copy/paste current trends.

    2. Well now that Nintendo has a capable 4k machine, I wouldn’t mind seeing them aquire a few new studios if it means tapping the full potential of the switch 2. I think a company like square enix could be extremely beneficial to them.

      1. Sony doesn’t want to spend to buy them they wanted WB but don’t have the money and they refused to spend to fully acquire Kadokawa despite wanting to buy them then changed it to they only want From Software, add on Square games underperformed on PS5 Valkyrie Elysium, FF16, FF7R2, Babylon Fall, Forespoken, why would sony waste on that? They splurged on Bungie and that blew up in their face so no. Nintendo buying them makes more sense to regain SuperMario RPG characters and to own Dragon Quest, Monolith being reunited with Xenogears also a plus.

      2. Square’s relationship with Sony isn’t nearly as strong as it was before. Forspoken was awful. FF is underperforming for quite a while now. The sole games that managed to perform consistently last gen were the HD 2D ones, hence why Square is now giving DQ1, 2 and 3 the HD 2D treatment. And, also, putting FFVIIR on every platform under the sun.

  1. You’re too late, Nintendo. Luigi’s Mansion 4 has been in development for 6 years, and there’s no news about Monolith Soft’s medieval-themed game. Instead of a 3D Mario game, you made a low-selling Donkey Kong Bananza.

    1. People still on about that?
It’s just recruiter bait. Next you’re gonna say they were making a slavery BSDM game but turned it into Xenoblade 2

  2. Honestly, buy Platinum Games. I don’t think they’re doing very well lately. Would be a shame if they went under. I want Astral Chain 2!

  3. Now??? Bruh yall shoulda bought atlus wtf lol
Buy rare from microsoft for the IPs and some “western styled games” or hell, buy playtonic

    1. Atlus was too mature for Nintendo at least at that time and Nintendo wasn’t making the type of money they make now. Clear you are just a clown. Playtonic is a dump and they just got Tencent money to avoid selling, Rare is a dump too that studio should be closed down! Microsoft probably wouldn’t sell the IP if they did it would be at a premium and Nintendo sees no value in that add on its been too long outside Banjo Nintendo may not have much interest in the rest of IP. Conker is too controversial, Battletoads IDK, Jet Force Gemini probably not, Perfect Dark no.

      1. Atlus wasn’t as big as it is now either. I mean Persona 5 really changed that companies trajectory. Not saying they were doing bad but they weren’t as known as they are now.

  4. Conker is not too controversial, it’s just woke shat from countries like the UK punishing people through authoritarian BS.

Conker was/is an adult game, it’s just developers haven’t got the balls to make such a game today, especially not from backwards countries like UK that are easily offended by everything.

    1. and Nintendo never published the game themselves.
You think that’s changing any day? Even Xbox has been trying to memory hole Bad Fur Day as much as they could. For Nintendo, it’s another dead IP walking to them.

    1. Satan Nutella: “Rare? Isn’t that some kind of Tiktok video??”
You have no clue how dumb current MS right now. The CEO probably doesn’t even know what’s a Nintendo is.

  5. So Nintendo is trying to monopolize game companies and make every game low budget and lazy to make but expensive to buy? No thanks. There’s a reason more and more people have been calling it Nintendon’t lately.

  6. Lol this chat drooling over SEGA after weeks and weeks of trashing Sonic on the basis.
Do you even know how Nintendo buys companies? They noted they have to have some “Nintendo” blood in them and SEGA Sammy’s CEO made it clear they’re not exactly alike Nintendo, only a distinct ex-competitor.

Also this is also why they’re not buying all those fancy big ones console warriors are gunning for, they’re looking for who ever is going to support their infrastructure and dev their games outside their usual core and secondary support teams.

  7. The people who are asking Nintendo to buy SEGA don’t know what they’re asking for. 😭 Look at how Nintendo treats its fans. Now look at how SEGA treats its fans. Now look at the last time Nintendo made a deal with SEGA. (Lost World, Rise of Lyric.) Now look at their newest racing games.

Yeah. SEGA doesn’t need Nintendo. That would ruin things. Nintendo could take some notes from SEGA, though, especially this year.
