EDGE awards Metroid Prime 4 a 4/10 and Kirby Air Riders a 5/10

Notoriously harsh but generally fair UK gaming magazine EDGE have released their latest issue and with it comes a host of reviews including one for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It seems EDGE was not impressed with Metroid Prime 4 and awarded the game a 4/10. That’s not all as they also reviewed Kirby Air Riders and decided to award it 5/10. Here’s all the reviews from EDGE Issue 419:

  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – 4
  • Routine – 8
  • Skate Story – 6
  • Kirby Air Riders – 5
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 – 4
  • Demonschool – 6
  • Hotel Infinity – 8
  • Dispatch – 5
  • Sleep Awake – 6
  • Octopath Traveler 0 – 8
  • Horses – 7
  • Marvel Cosmic Invasion – 7

  1. Edge and the pointless people at it have always been anti-nintendo but would swear another re-release of the last of us is a 10/10. Also edge are known to give good reviews if you there’s cash in it for them.

    1. “Edge and the pointless people at it have always been anti-nintendo”

Some Nintendo games that received a 10/10 from Edge:
      – Super Mario 64
      – Ocarina of Time
      – Super Mario Galaxy
      – Super Mario Galaxy 2
      – Skyward Sword
      – Breath of The Wild
      – Super Mario Odyssey
      – Tears of The Kingdom
(You can also count Bayonetta 2, if you want)

Check the facts before making such a biased statement just because a game didn’t get the score you wanted

  2. Bizarre scores but it’s fine because it’s just their opinion and it differs significantly from mine. Also saying they are “generally fair” is a nonsense statement. There is no such thing as fairness in a review as it’s just one persons viewpoint. The closest thing to fairness in reviews is how Famitsu do it having 4 different people give their scores but even then it’s only four people.

    1. I believe what they mean by “generally fair” is “not being biased towards any particular company/platform”, that they’re harsh across the board and don’t play favorites. Not saying that’s my opinion, I haven’t read Edge since the early-to-mid 2000’s so no idea how they are now and I don’t quite remember if they ever showed bias back then but I don’t think it ever was obvious if they did or I wouldn’t have bothered, I avoided stuff that was clearly anti-Nintendo. Others seem to think they are biased against Nintendo, so I don’t know. Just explaining what the article likely meant, not that it was fair because it was 1 person.

I rarely ever care about reviews on anything (games, movies, concerts, music, books, etc.) Most of the time they’re excessively critical (it’s their job to analyze every piece of something instead of just enjoying it for what it is). Great reviews are always nice but just like bad reviews, it’s still always an opinion and could always be way off compared to someone else’s.

  3. These people give slop like Dragon Age The Veilguard near perfect scores so I will take the scores of MP4 and Air Riders to be almost 9/10.

  4. This is absolutely, most certainly not a very professional review of Metroid prime 4.
You telling me the amount of crap they’ve awarded more and than this.
Take it from me, a long time Metroid fan staring in the 80s with Metroid nes.
Love Metroid and super Metroid was amazing and I was blown away with the first prime on GameCube.
I’m probably speaking for a lot of prime fans now, yes we could of done without the amount of npc in the game and yes it does hold your hand too much and yes, the bike isn’t the best idea, BUT there is still a huge amount of quality in this game to justify it being a top switch game.
It looks incredible, and plays very well and there is some nice immersion throughout.
Hopefully the rumours are true that another prime game is being developed straight away and these trial and errors can be addressed, but Metroid prime 4 is decent, maybe not original prime decent, but still a solid title and if you have a switch/switch 2 I seriously recommend it!

    1. Have you tried using your brain before commenting?

Quick everyone let’s defend dogshit game journalists who have literally no idea what they’re talking about.

    2. Trivialising game reviews, particularly from a professional outlet (as opposed to say, a random YouTuber) as just different opinions is not helpful. There is of course a degree of subjectivity to game reviews but there is definitely a degree of objectivity too. A score of 4 is beyond the realm of subjective gripes and is saying that the game is poor in most departments. I haven’t played the game so I can’t comment on the accuracy of that, but if people think that that perspective is off the mark they are right to criticise.

    1. The gameplay is fun, but I do have to admit that I’m a bit disappointed in the writing for the scans. One particular note is when you’re reading the scans in the research facility, they never actually spoke about the biology of the Grievers; neither their exact mutations nor their base biological makeup are specified. It’s almost like they were talking around the actual subject matter rather than the matter itself. The original trilogy’s writing would detail exactly how each creature’s bodily systems worked, what was wrong, and how they came to stop functioning.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Prime 4’s writing is bad, but it’s not on par with the original trilogy’s.

  5. I’ve beaten several Metroid games and just cleared Prime 4 with 100% and there are a lot off extremely horrible choices and more in the game. They make you have to fill that Green Crystal Meter completely Twice. That ruined the entire game for me though there are so many more negative things in the game.

      1. It is true unless you want to feel like a failure and not get 100%. Also when you first get the bike they tell you to pick where to go, that was a lie, then I had a boss bug and glitch into the wall causing me to reload my save, the aiming seemed very off on the Pro Controller, and the Ending was Horrible and goes against Samus’s character. The Bike turns too wide and the entire sole valley section is one of the worst experiences Ive ever had in gaming and I’ve played thousands of games. Nintendrones are always going to defend though. Look at Pokémon.

  6. 5/10 for Kirby Air Riders after Samurai’s directs is criminal. The game has so much heart and soul put into it and you know it is technically impressive.

  7. Just beat it last night. It was shorter than i was expecting. I was hoping after I collected all 5 keys that I’d only completed the first half. It’s a solid 7-8 and the graphics are pretty sweet as well as the solid frame rate.

  8. Don’t you have to get a subscription to get all the bells and whistles out of Metroid Prime 4 on an already $70 game? Yeah i would have given the greedy developers a 4/10 too.

  9. This game is anywhere between a 6-8 out of 10. It cant be 4 because that’s just isn’t the general consensus. Some people seem to be enjoying the game.

  10. As much I dislike Edge, this 4 is deserved for both games. The quality of those series really went down over time and Metroid 4 is trash and not worth it to be a Metroid Prime game… there I said it.
