SEGA has revealed that the Sonic the Hedgehog brand franchise sales are currently down year-over-year. They only shifted 1.76m Sonic game sales between October and December 2026. This is compared with 3.45m the year before. SEGA also said that Sonic Rumble failed to meet company expectations and the company didn’t comment on Sonic Racing CrossWorlds in its quarterly report.

Also Platinum Shadow game and Silver game. 4Kids cast back. Frontiers I would rather see go away. RGG was interested in a Sonic game I say let them make a open world Sonic game.

But sonic is a multiplatform franchise (mobile phones, steam and dedicated gaming consoles) so 1.7 million pales in comparison if it were a single platform exclusive.
That amount would be good for let’s say kirby which is a experience that cannot be bought elsewhere.
Exactly all the “be realistic” crowd on massive cope that the game flopped while Mario thrives. Multi platform will set higher expectations even worse they probably are not making their money back they wasted it on guest characters, big reveals at Geoff shows, and paid streamers to play the game they probably wasted a ton and are not making that back. These people just see 1 million something copies sold and assume that’s good and gaslight telling everyone companies are evil and have too high expectations because something they like flopped or most of what they like sells bad. This game doesn’t seem profitable and to be fair many did not want it they wanted Sonic Riders.
I believe they are going to release the next major Sonic title in March 2027 like skipping the anniversary year release like they did with Forces and Frontiers. I completely understand that Sonic Team and SEGA needs to build more momentum for the Sonic brand to assure its quality and see fans expectations depending how much thousands or millions they are spending on each mainline Sonic games. Making big projects like video games isn’t cheap.

Sonic games always used to be profitable enough now not so much also yeah 2027 for sure the new game but I was hoping Heroes remake would get announced this year and would prefer the 4Kids cast voicing the characters. I don’t think it’s momentum they just don’t get the audience or at least a large portion theres a lot of people who want Sonic from their era which is ignored and old people who I don’t even think like Sonic bashed that as the “dark era” but for many in their 20’s that’s their Sonic and they are nostalgic for it the current games do not scratch that itch it’s not just Sonic I would say it’s almost everything entertainment TMNT is another they ignore the 2003 cartoon despite it being the longest running one and instead try to poorly replicate the campy 80’s cartoon. Sonic is kind of in that space of trying to cater to a audience I don’t think is fully there or not at all. Even worse when that younger audience is bashed or ignored along with what they like so they move on. Gen Z is not catered to the same way millennials were and millennials refuse to go away.
The amount of costs not being made back think all the promotion, they paid off streamers, and then third party guests they are not making back the budget that number of sakes doesn’t cover it don’t just go and assume 1 million means it sold well.

It seems people don’t like Sonic games with no Sally Acorn, no Chao garden, no super modes for the rest of Sonics friends, no fusion between Sonic and Shadow, and you can play as Classic Sonic and/or only play as Sonic. Who knew?

Gonna sound like one of those guys but….
They never should have abandoned the Adventure style games.
High stakes stories that took themselves seriously.
Some game franchises evolve overtime to avoid the gameplay getting stale, but Adventure by design has multiple gameplay styles every game and always introduced new ones. There was no reason not just continue to hone-in on better, smoother mechanics.
And Adventure was when they were trying to set Action-Platforming genre standards. Now they just follow trends or throw mud at the wall to see if it sticks.
One embarrassingly bad, forced to market too early game and SEGA scars themselves for eternity. Several bad or bland games don’t seem to even register on their radar.
I agree we should have gotten Adventure 3, Sonic X I think should come back or a new Sonic anime, it’s all true they made better games then the problem is a bunch of now almost 50 year old millennials attacked Sonic just because. Most never played the games Adventure 2 was attacked, Heroes, Shadow, Sonic Riders, Battle, Rush was ignored, 2006 was mocked but none of them played it, Unleashed, they attacked Sonic X because they hate anime and they like SatAm, that behavior hurt the franchise the company listening to them over real Sonic fans who were probably kids back then now in their 20’s. The nostalgia is there they have to strike it all of the entertainment industry I think has this problem they ignore that era early 2000’s late 90’s. If they want to fix Sonic that’s the only way how and I don’t think Frontiers 2 will do well the first game was lukewarm and sales I think were exaggerated given the game was on sale for $20 less than a week after release. People want the Shadow with a gun maybe better gameplay just hire Platinum to make it, let them make Silver game this is his 20th anniversary should get something, Sonic Adventure remake the first 2 games, bring back Heroes, bring back Battle, at this point I trust RGG to make a Sonic game more or Shadow. The 4Kids cast needs to return as well

I kind of agree I do want Shadow 2 but nothing against Sonic also want a Silver game and wouldn’t mind other characters getting games like Rouge or Blaze, the Chaotix. Sonic should just go back to the anime style and bring back that voice cast from Sonic X. Also Sonic Riders.

Prime is trash too, the racing game, to be fair colors is bad as well. Worst part is the long wait between games now. You also forgot Lost World and playing Generations again not amazing it’s ok. Sonic needs to be restructured the current leadership needs to go and needed to a long time ago Iizuka for sure and then new people Ian Flynn the weird shipper guy and Aaron Webber who enables him and is why Sonic Boom was made.

I see people coming down on games but Sonic Frontiers for the most part was well received especially after FREE updates after all the upda, Superstars struggled because they should have split screened the characters, with alt paths so you can see each other running in the background or something and adjusted the bosses to be like old school 2D bosses. Not a fan of mobile games and also Sonic Racing seems to have more hype than Mario Kart which ngl I just want to play as Nights. Shadow Generations I heard was good not sure about the sales though. They need to do a Sonic Adventure 3 type game with a hub and stages connected like SA1 add a chao garden

Frontier’s is weird it wasn’t praised it was people who haven’t played Sonic in years saying it wasn’t that bad not positive per say and because if that SonicTeam will just make the same game again like they did with Colors. Frontiers is weird because it went on sale less than a week after release for $20 so the sales success of that I think is very exaggerated the game seemed empty and the story was trash. 2D Sonic I think is too much a thing of the past people want Adventure era back SuperStars was always going to flop.
I thought Shadow Generations showed that the team still has potential for fun gameplay. They need to continue that, tie it to an above average story (haven’t felt super positive about one since Unleashed), and have exciting levels to run through. Shadow Gens was great but at the end of the day it still heavily reused assets.

Sega lost the plot after Sonic Adventure 2. Everything went down, Sonic Team got scraped and now we have a fanboy as a writer. The best thing would be, if Sega would just give up Sonic and do other games or simply gave up at all. These people, just like Nintendo nowadays, can’t make a compelling or interesting story anymore. I bet if Archie would still have the rights to Sonic, Sega would pull every character of this awful comic into their games. People really lost the ability to write good story nowadays and this is an alarming sign.
