Japan: Young gamers not forming same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest due to lengthy dev time

A large number of Japanese gamers have been discussing on social media why younger gamers are not getting into beloved video game franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. They have concluded that younger Japanese gamers are not forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest due to the lengthy development times it takes for new entries in the series to appear. While the franchises remain very popular in Japan, they resonate less with the youth and more with older gamers who grew up with the games in their childhoods.

  1. Final Fantasy has definitely lost my respect since 15… I don’t know what Square Enix was thinking when making 15 and (especially) 16, but they clearly only have the name ‘Final Fantasy’! As for Dragon Quest, I’m glad that the spirit of the franchise is still there, even if the remake of 7 disappointed me quite a bit with its relative ease and the content cut compared to the 3DS version.
