A large number of Japanese gamers have been discussing on social media why younger gamers are not getting into beloved video game franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. They have concluded that younger Japanese gamers are not forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest due to the lengthy development times it takes for new entries in the series to appear. While the franchises remain very popular in Japan, they resonate less with the youth and more with older gamers who grew up with the games in their childhoods.

Final Fantasy has definitely lost my respect since 15… I don’t know what Square Enix was thinking when making 15 and (especially) 16, but they clearly only have the name ‘Final Fantasy’! As for Dragon Quest, I’m glad that the spirit of the franchise is still there, even if the remake of 7 disappointed me quite a bit with its relative ease and the content cut compared to the 3DS version.
FF13 is the worst
exactly it literally lasted for a decade and technically 15 is also 13 and yet people want a remake and remaster like give me a break…
The mistake with FF15 was having all it’s story scattered across multiple games and alternate mediums. Then they made it worse by canceling the last 3 episodes and turning them into yet another different medium: a damn novel. If they put it all in one long, huge game, we probably woulda got a great game. That said, I still adore FFXV and the mess it was. I spent what probably felt like 2 years playing it. (Was probably legit 2 years.)
Squeenix is clearly ran by morons these days. They’re idiocy even negatively impacted KH3… and modern Disney didn’t help matters.
FF15 should get remade fix the story wish they would do it but Tabata left to form a new studio JP Gajes so I don’t know how it would turn out maybe letting Nomura make Versus 13 would sell well or Verum Rex he claims they are separate games but IDK? Ports for sure need to happen 15 on Switch 2. At this point I do think Square Enix should sell to Nintendo give Xenogears to Monolith, finally make Super Mario RPG, SquareSoft as a seperate split from Enix as 2 separate studios make cheaper JRPG’s occasionally some big ones. No more western games and sell Sleeping Dogs to Saber Interactive.
Partially true the younger crowd around their 20’s likes Kingdom Hearts more, in the case of Final Fantasy X and XV are popular, and Dragon Quest actually did well with XI for younger audiences. Bouncer might actually do well also adapting Gangan manga into games like Red Ranger Becomes An Adventurer In Another World, Soul Eater, and others partner with Hiromu Arakawa to create a new game her art and writing a CyberConnect2 action RPG with anime arena fighter elements. XI did will for Dragon Quest remake Chrono Trigger the same way also make anime series adapting games it attracts more people same with the Gangan stuff if it’s adapted into anime more reason to adapt into games, you know what Bandai used to do. Sleeping Dogs has its crowd I know it’s western but it’s better than funding games like Killer Inn and Life Is Strange, at least port it to Switch 2. Musashi could sell well maybe making a new game for that. Versus XIII or Verum Rex could do well, a Kingdom Hearts MMO, obviously remake of Dark Road and Union X too.

I think the other thing that has been lost here that adds to this is that all the other RPGs stepped up. Like I remember people being hyped for persona and the tail series in the past, but when particularly Final Fantasy 13 stumbled the alternatives kind of got better overall at the same time and those have skyrocketed. So I would say that younger Gamers are probably more hyped for games like persona. Then they are Final Fantasy because of that.
Final Fantasy doesn’t resonate with younger people also big gaps between games? No that’s Kingdom Hearts the franchise that does appeal to the younger crowd. Remake and Rebirth 4 years, 16 came out before Rebirth, Stranger In Paradise before that, and Tactics recently so there is no long gaps there games actually release. Kingdom Hearts is just thrown to the wayside also Sleeping Dogs a western IP they abandoned but still own instead of wasting more money on flops like Life Is Strange and Killer Inn make that, funny Square said no more western games after selling Eidos yet here 2 more are coming out this year. Just sell Sleeping Dogs off. Only Final Fantasy that did click with younger audiences was 15 and honestly that could use a remake to fix the story or let Nomura tell his version since he never got to and took it out on Kingdom Hearts 3.
Lengthy dev time has nothing to do with it you released mostly FF this gen and all flopped Square. The young gen wants KH you can have FF characters in the game but the current stuff doesn’t appeal to them it appeals to 43 year olds and not all of them. Before Gen Z is 35 start catering to them they will not wait forever any longer and it will be the point of no return.
Lengthy dev time for KH tho no mention of that funny no mention they delisted mobile games won’t remake them or cancelled another mobile game instead of making it a console title. There’s also over woje stuff hurts them too the company is run by idiots look they said they would focus on Japanese games not western ones anymore after selling off Eidos but here we are a new western IP Killer Inn and a sequel to flop Life Is Strange 4 or 5 this year only Square is this dumb. They could port Sleeping Dogs since they own it still to Switch 2 and XV and Type-0 HD easy money but nope.

Younger fans resonated with 15 and DQ11 and especially KH that’s the game with 9 years in between modern entires not FF and DQ gets remakes and spin-offs. Also maybe don’t make a weird DMC dark ages game no one asked for or wanted 15 had the style fans liked also not drag out 7 remake to 3 games reinterpreting the story it’s daunting to newcomers confused who did not play the first game. There’s also over saturation of FF the 7 remakes, Stranger In Paradise, 14, and 16 no long gaps just no interest. KH has interest but is abandoned not seeing a new game in 6 years also making western garbage people don’t like doesn’t help financials Forespoken, Killer Inn, Outriders, The Quiet Man, Thief, life is strange, Avengers, and other crap none of it appealed to younger audiences.
Problem is they make games for a bunch of mentally ill woke 40 year olds same with all companies and Hollywood stop that and you might make money the demo should be Gen Z who are not woke activist loser crazies for the most part actually more right leaning they think Trump is woke.
Final Fantasy has been garbage since they allowed Yoshi-P to backstab Tanaka and take his FFXIV away before he was even given a chance to correct any of the complaints about FFXIV. Now FFXIVARR+ has a story so horrible that they sell skip passes, put dresses on male characters (looking at you Urianger,) and is now basically a giant gay parade whenever you go to Lomsa Lominsa and oyher places, bunch of guys in womens clothes using emotes to simulate gay sexual acts. Do you think Tanaka would have allowed FFXIV to become such garbage? Nope, Yoshi-P never grasped what made Final Fantasy special, now FFXIV is a giant WoW clone instead of a Final Fantasy game. My last straw was when they started referring to singular people are plural, calling everyone “they” – ugh, to make things worse, Square-Enix’s president is a giant Naoki Yoshida fan, so his love for Yoshi-P made him promote Yoshi-P to be on the board of directors, which mean the anti-FF Yoshi-P was given the power to ruin other games like he ruined FFXIV. Yoshi-P and Takashi Kiryu (guy in charge) need to be fired from Square-Enix, that’s the only thing that can save FF. At this point though, just let FF fade away, a footnote in video game history on how a franchise can go from legendary to garbage when useless people get put in charge.
I remember playing Final Fantasy 1&2 Advance and I couldn’t get into it. Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga were much more fun.
Young people aren’t getting into them because there’s more and better competition.
The problem to fix isn’t “How do we get young people into Final Fantasy?” It’s “What’s something new we can try that people who don’t care about Final Fantasy want?”
