Nintendo has confirmed in a recent developer interview that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has been in development for the Nintendo Switch since 2017, which is when the Nintendo Switch made its worldwide debut. They started work on the new game after development had “settled down” on the charming mobile game, Miitomo. The idea of a sequel to the original Tomodachi Life game on the Nintendo Switch came about when Mr. Sakamoto- said “There’s so much that I want my Mii characters to experience, but there’s nothing more that I can do for them.” They then decided to pursue the idea of Tomodachi Life Living the Dream on the newer Nintendo Switch hardware. So, what sparked development of this all-new Tomodachi Life game?
Takahashi: I believe development started around 2017, after things had settled down on Miitomo. The producer, Sakamoto-sa, and I both have a special attachment to Tomodachi Life and have been playing the previous game on Nintendo 3DS for many years. But we’d already squeezed all we could out of that game, and Sakamoto-san said to me sadly, “There’s so much that I want my Mii characters to experience, but there’s nothing more that I can do for them.” (Laughs) So, we talked about our desire to create a new Tomodachi Life game.
Man I LOVED Miitomo, to the point that I had a modded version after their closure so I could keep play it. The photo maker was very cool, I had a gallery full of dumb photos with my mii, can’t wait to fill my sd card again with living the dream, me and my friends fell in love just with the demo

Wow I thought Nintendo consolidated all their devs to one platform.. MK World apparently took 8 years to make as well and it doesn’t even have a basic campaign mode which DKR devs made on the 64 in just a couple of years.
These super long development times on a low end console is embarrassing for Nintendo given the lack of content sometimes.
Look, I love DKR but let’s not pretend it had some special story mode. It was just races. It was basically Grand Prix but one race at a time. The only thing DKR has that MKW doesn’t is boss races… in which case I think MKDS is a better game to compare it to than DKR.
I always enjoy Miitomo and they should have keep it a little longer.
