Star Fox’s original artist prefers movie Fox McCloud design to the new one

Takaya Imamura, the former Nintendo artist behind the original Star Fox crew, has said on X that he prefers The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s version of Fox McCloud to the new Star Fox game’s Fox McCloud. However, Mr. Imamura said that he doesn’t dislike the Nintendo Switch 2 game’s design of Fox McCloud, instead he praised it for having a clear direction and being well defined, he just prefers the movie version.

“Personally, I prefer the movie version, but I thought this version was good too because its direction was clear and well-defined!”

  1. Movie design is similar to what we’re all used to. The remake design will take people some time to get used to because of how different it is. Personally, I’ve already warmed up to the new design.

  2. I tend to prefer cartoon-y styles. (For instance, although it is overused at this point, I’m NOT a hater of the CalArts bean mouth look.) But I kinda dig trying to give StarFox a bold new style. The fact that it’s a little unsettling/uncanny is honestly sorta cool.

  3. As an OG SNES Starfox fan, I like both art styles, but the new game harkens back to the original SNES promotional material so it strikes some great nostalgia and makes the game feel more real. I was hoping for a new adventure but can’t wait to get my paws on this one.

  4. At the beginning of the trailer my face was all like :/ but two minutes into the trailer it was all like :D I think it’s a bold and exciting direction for the characters.

  5. The Character Design is more appealing for everyone including younger audiences because the characters looked Cool. The New designs give off Ugly Sonic Vibes and designs that I don’t think kids will like and that’s really not smart to do when you just had the character in a widely successful movie viewed all over the planet. Now would is the best time to pramote Starfox and they decide to do that to the character’s in an already struggling franchise. Zero failed due to the WiiU and not offering a traditional control option. The Original Switch would have in theory been the best platform to put Starfox on, has the widest audience. I have a Switch 2, but many still do not. It’s always feels like Nintendo does something to ruin the chances of their less popular franchises from selling l. Not to metion its Starfox 64 again, no new levels, same layout as the original. Starfox 64 can be beaten in an hour and the unlockable difficulty seems to just be 64’s original difficulty

  6. There’s definitely an uncanny-valley thing to them, but I don’t hate it- I think they were going for a mix of the puppets used for the SNES game promotional material and realism.

Falco not wearing boots and exposing his talons creeps me out though…
