Star Fox 64 original designer says the remake graphics made him feel “choked up”

The new Star Fox game from Velan Studios, which is a reimagining of the classic Nintendo 64 game Star Fox 64, looks visually superb and a demo is available for you to see for yourself. Writing on X, Star Fox 64 original designer Takaya Imamura, says that the visuals have made him feel choked up as he explains the different rendering techniques the game used back in the day on the Nintendo 64.

Back in the Nintendo 64 days, I really struggled to get people to understand the difference between pre-rendered footage and real-time CG. Plenty of folks thought those gorgeous PlayStation movies were just the raw power of the console itself. So with “Star Fox 64,” we aimed for demo scenes and staging that wouldn’t look shabby next to pre-rendered stuff, all while chasing the unique appeal that only real-time could deliver. In that sense, this latest graphics upgrade really gets me choked up.

  1. Hm.. it doesn’t really look much if any better than a PS4 game, Switch 2 is only very slightly more powerful than a PS4.. and while Starfox does look pretty nice, it also could’ve looked better again.

But looks aside, they should have leaned into the whole remake thing and added a lot of new levels and challenge for those who will likely beat the game without much problem.

They apparently already added an extra underwater stage.. so saying it needs to be 1:1 with the N64 version is just silly talk. Anything new wouldn’t change the overall ending either.. so it just feels slightly lazy.

The only interesting thing for those familiar with the original is to play the challenge modes, and see if grabbing all the medals unlocks anything new, considering expert is already selectable from the start.

    1. Yeah sorry guys, I had a bit of a retard moment there. I get them quite often as you can probably tell.

      This game actually looks amazing.

  2. When people have no valid argument to make, they say “Switch 2 is only as powerful as a PS4”.

Like the PS4 is this 30 year old console with crappy graphics.

    1. I don’t know what truthbringer is saying, like look at the amount of ps5 games on switch 2, some even launching the same day as other platforms (resident evil 9, pragmata, kingdom hearts 4, final fantasy 7 revelations.)

  3. Was neutral towards this but liked what I saw. When I played the demo I was pretty into it. Silky smooth mechanics. And the music, camera work during cut scenes, voice acting, etc all felt pretty cinematic.
